that's the article that brought it all to a head. chris asked paul to apologize, paul refused, chris quit. that said, they were all kinda nervous. paul was interviewed alone, and tommy, chris and slim were interviewed together. when they got to Tommy, Chris and Slim, they all asked "what did Paul say about us?"...they've all come a long way since then.

I'm sure,if possible, they would be there for each other in their own way no matter who in the band needed help, which is a different thing than wanting to actually put the band back together again.
If anyone of us played someone elses songs for ten years and then they turned around and basically told the world that you suck in the press,we might be inclined to wash our hands of ever playing any more music with them.Though Paul has said several times in recent years that he would like to play music with Chris again.
Then again Chris didn't even tour behind his own album. He had a band play shows without him.So his reluctance to play probably isn't relegated to just with Paul.Maybe he took the Beefheart philosophy that if you want to be taken serious as a painter you should stop playing music.Golden Smog is a pretty good band and he quit that band.
Does anyone know if Chris played any solo shows for Horseshoes & Hand Grenades?

How did this thread get so off topic?
I really like All Shook Down. The songwriting is full of so much imagery.Like the cover, the rain just wont let up.The production suited the material maybe better than any album since Let It Be.If ASD were a Freedy Johnston album or a similar type artist it would be held in higher esteem.Maybe it was to their detriment,on some levels, that the Replacements never made the same album twice.Though they seemed to hit their stride and have a great formula from Let It Be thru PTMM.I just couldn't believe how good the songs were on those records.I was like,"How does he keep doing it? I pretty much felt that about all their albums.Tommy has said his favorite mats albums are Tim and ASD. The thing is,when it came to seeing them play live, maybe the older material was better suited for what they did best as a live band.

You make a lot of great points, Dee. All Shook Down is indeed a rarity in that it's the kind of consistently great record that at the same time, doesn't contain that many individual highlights that would become concert staples, feature on a Best Of, etc.

For me ASD is near the bottom of the Replacements discography. I think it feels tired, forced and unnatural, like an attempt to be something they aren't for the sake of getting there, while at the same time just grasping at the last threads of spirit left in them. I was so disappointed when I heard Merry Go Round a couple weeks before the record came out. It sounded way too much like I'll Be You to me (the comparison would fade a little over time, but it was the road I was hoping they wouldn't go down).
I still think a lot of the song writing is weak - Merry Go Round, Attitude, Happy Town, All Shook Down, My Little Problem are all songs that could be throw-aways. I like One Wink at a Time, Bent out of Shape, When it Began and The Last. I agree with Dee that the production might be the best since Let It Be, but the overall vibe of just holding onto something that wasn't there anymore overshadows the whole record. I thought 14 Songs was way better (and I didn't love that).

I absolutely love ASD...always have. I remember a buddy of mine being disappointed at how overly mellow/mid-tempo it all was, but it kind of rocked harder in an Every-Picture-Tells-Story-way than Don't Tell a Soul did.
Although I did always think it was odd that the two singles--Merry Go Round and When It Began--were maybe among the weakest tracks, and they were two songs that always seemed out of place on the album to me. Torture was always a favorite for me. I went to three shows on that tour and at two of them, Paul added an extra verse to Torture that really made the album version seem unfinished. Never found recordings of either show.

One Wink... is brilliant IMO and Someone Take The Wheel really captured the emotion of the band. Great lyrics there. I liked the album much more than DTAS but it did seem like end times were near. All in all a good final chapter album I'd say.

I think it feels tired, forced and unnatural I think that's what I like about it... Laid back and reflective can be positive attributes, but tired and forced are not usually complementary words when describing art. It leads to an insincere final product, which I think ASD is. Paul was out of ideas and scraping the barrel. I get why people like the record - I don't think it's without any merit, but I just don't think it stands up with anything else in the catalog. (And, I would add Torture among the tracks I like from the record.) It would have made a really good EP. Compared to DTAS, which has inferior production - I think DTAS is a more consistent record with better songs and fewer duds. But that's what's cool about this board - it's nice to get an opposing perspective. Maybe I'll put on ASD today.

Let's put it this way, my German vinyl copy of All Shook Down is one of the last records I would ever consider getting rid of. ...no wait- what am I saying? I'll never consider getting rid of it! I'd eat dirt first!

Well, of course, I was trying to be funny. Whatever merits it does or does not have, I usually find it makes me depressed. Sometimes, I respect having that reaction. Sometimes, I'd rather not listen to something that's going to make me depressed. This is sort of unrelated to whether it's "good" or not...

To me, ASD just conveys sadness to me....I think I have to be in a certain mood to want to listen to it, but I don't mind a few songs off it to play as stand alone tunes.
It also sounds uninspired to me because there's something missing, that kind of energy, the spark I'd expect. Then again, it seems like that was all that Paul had left in him, and if the band didn't have their heart in it, well, it kind of comes through on the album.
But having said that, I still like Merry Go Round, mostly live. I too remember it being played on the radio and my reaction was like, ehhhhh. I like The Last as well, but it really conveys more of that sadness. especially being the last cut on their last album.

I remember when I first got the album that When It Began sounded real good to me. It was completely different from anything they'd done before and I actually thought it could be a huge radio hit. It was the one uplifting melody besides Attitude.
The best track for me which I still love these days is Nobody. It has really good things said about it in the comments on this you tube. It's a brilliant song IMO.

yeah, I like Nobody as well...I like the guitar solo on it too. But it's also another sad kind of song, going to the wedding of someone you once loved and that person still loves you. But she's marrying someone else.
The lyrics are clever, but still, so much melancholy infused in the entire album.
When It Began is a nice tune but Paul kills me when he sings
and if you say nothing well that's something I'll understand...
another really sad line that tears at me, because I always took it as he was talking about the Mats career and the lack of a wider audience. when it began and they started getting success, he puts his heart and soul out there to a greater audience and they were the ones who said nothing, they just didnt' respond.
It's a real wistful look back...

If you guys get depressed listening to All Shook Down, please don't ever listen to Suicaine Gratifaction -- it'll send you running for an overpass to jump from.
I think Jer's complaints about ASD apply more to that album, too. For me, SD is the sound of depressed/uninspired barrel-scraping.
ASD has some melancholic moments, but it's hardly Joy Division. To my ears it's plenty warm and witty. Paul is firing on all cylinders lyrically, and the production suits the tunes perfectly.

SG is the one record of PW's that I would probably put below ASD on my list of his records (not counting the basement download stuff). I agree with you - it suffers from everything that ASD suffers from - forced, tired, uninspired. Probably even more so. Funny that it also includes 2 songs that are possibly my fav PW solo songs - Wonderful Lie and Lookin Out Forever. (I also like Things and maybe a couple other tracks). ASD is a bit melancholy, but you are right - it's not Joy Division. But my my issues with it aren't the lyrical content but the lyrics themselves and the general feel of the record. In general I hate happy songs, and the best music is from the darkest places. Where I disagree is the "Paul is firing on all cylinders lyrically" bit.

As for the "in fighting" with the band...I really think Paul was looking for new people to work with and to explore new sounds without trying to convince the others,,i.e. "Someone Take the Wheel". I also think Paul had a little of the "professional wrestling" thing going on when he did interviews,,,embelishment, embelishment, embelishment!! I believe he admitted that at one point, too. As for All Shook Down....still one of my favorites. Definitely not a PTMM type vibe...but a, to paraphrase Paul, "a spooky, quiet, and downbeat last album....maybe the last one shouldn't be a party....". Remember, he wrote and recorded this NOT thinking Tommy, Chris or Slim would be anywhere near it..it was a Paul solo album until the record company insisted it be released as a Mat's album. That being said..........I really think many of the songs/album were written by Paul as a guy that was dealing with sobriety, either in trying to be sober, or, keeping yourself sober. I'd love to discuss this angle with him. My reason for thinking this..... """Baggage claim is this way So watch her walk down that way In a hurry To put an end to his day She's got the devil in her eyes Only one way to exorcise him One wink at a time One wink at a time A mail order ring wrapped tight Around a Singapore sling at night Thinkin' to yourself it needs some more rum Use me to lean against You try to hail an ambulance Try sticking out your tongue""""" "One Wink at a Time"....try..."One drink at a time"....he is getting off a plane and ignores the baggage to get to the bar...the devil is in his eyes....he knows it's bad, but only one thing to do....now his hand is wrapped around a Singapore Sling....... "Bent out of Shape".....where do you want to start with this one!? It's all about a guy trying to forget his drinking past and move on... "I smell you hair The clothes I wear I miss your face Can't you see I'm bent all out of shape You got me bent all out of shape" ....missing that smell of a bar.... "I couldn't lie if I tried Yeah you kept me staight It don't feel so good But it made me feel great" .... it doesn't feel great to be hungover in the morning...but it feels GREAT to keep the train rolling at night.... """" Probably tell your friends You were on a bet/bed All the many pieces That you're never gonna mend Let's put it together Some way, somehow Something's wrong But I can't stop now, no no no no no no no no [ Lyrics from: www.lyricsty.com/replacements-my-little-problem-lyrics.html ] Don't you wanna be my little problem Slide up next to me any time Don't you wanna be my little problem I never had a problem Till I knew you'd try to solve it Well I never had a problem Don't you... Till I told you, yeah"""""""""""...... "probably tell your friends you were on a BEND""...Paul's little "problem" was the booze... """ I never had a problem Till I knew you'd try to solve it Well I never had a problem Don't you... Till I told you, yeah"""" ..............................in the Mats, it was never a problem...that's what they were SUPOSSED to do!!! And,,expected to do..... I can feel Paul's "Problem" with this situation in his career..... AND...."The Last".........if anyone needs to think this is anything other than someone trying to quit something that is, potentially, harming their life...... This is a GENIUS song about someone that has/still being someone that is trying to do the right thing....on their road to sobriety............................................................................................................................. I hear ya....................................................................................................................... Paul is the/my genius............. He really get's it....and can write about it.......
