This isn't that random but something I stumbled across on YouTube. In 1989, a fan got pulled onstage to play with the band: Cool! She nailed it. Re: the last time she saw Slim however—“Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” (See text near the end.) I saw them in NYC in March but these shows were under 30 minutes from my house....I can't recall I didn't go to see them when they were so close! There's good interview with them at a local bar for MTV here (I'm sure everyone's seen!): www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eJbOy6u0NA

This apparently is from 2007 but got posted on YouTube just last year. Good interview. Not sure if it was posted here before or not:

This is funny (to me anyway). Someone came up with "the Westerberg-Musk evaluation . . . to precisely measure undeserved outcomes" and then applied it to teams in the National Hockey League about a year ago. He describes Paul as "the lead singer and songwriter for the Replacements, a tremendously talented band that blew every opportunity to get popular" and "a dismal failure despite undeniable virtue". I think the second quote is a bit harsh with regards to Paul but the concept is pretty funny overall at least to me anyway. I stumbled across it in just doing a general Google search on Paul in hopes of finding something new. russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2022/10/31/paul-westeberg-elon-musk-nhl-teams/

I'm a long suffering Caps fan (even though they won it all in 2018) so I follow that blog and am back to suffering thru another season of going nowhere! Capitals play the Wild tonight, wonder if Paul will watch the game.

THE REPLACEMENTS
Let It Be
TWIN/TONE, 1984
Paul Westerberg’s voice was like a beacon to me. I recognized its defiant sadness, like we had been siblings in another life. I really related to the misfit attitude of always defying authority, even at personal risk: the idea of self-sabotage as heroism. Later, Paul and I made music together, and it was very exciting to get to know this hero of mine as an actual person. He hasn’t lost any of his musical power. But the fact that he doesn’t want to share his music with the public, I totally get it, because it’s very draining. Paul said to me once about music that I needed to save some for myself – don’t give everything to the audience because then you’ll have nothing of yourself left.

I guess he holds back these songs that are just for himself. I thought he did say that it was like therapy for him, so I'm guessing these tunes he holds back are pretty personal self expressions?
Came across this, dunno if this has been posted before:

Green Day on Howard Stern today, BJ mentioned The Replacements at least once and Hüsker Dü at least a couple times as influences and the reasons he was able to embrace music from the songwriting perspective over the unobtainable metal/shredding angle at an early age. Rang familiar to me, for sure. It was a great interview and the band sounded great. xx

Watching the Islanders game in Minnesota Tuesday night, they were playing Alex Chilton at the arena during a stop in play.

The Penguin versions of some books by Thomas Ligotti feature covert art by Chris Mars. Not “news” per se—this image is from a book published in 2018—but new to me.

I’ve been binging Ted Lasso (free 3 months of Apple TV). Very good, heart tugging show with excellent music choices. Nightclub Jitters just came on.

File under “Things I didn’t know I needed.” Hell yeah. Campbell’s version of “Ghost” feels too saccharine to me. Paul’s is raw and perfect. Curious to hear how Sting approaches the tune—dude is, inarguably, some kind of rock auteur. Lucky us!

Sleater-Kinney on Tim: Let It Bleed…I don’t think there’s any controversy? I hope she didn’t get talked out of buying it.
