Saw that infomercial, "The Spirit of Rock & Roll" It was from HMV who has a deal of 2 for $15 or $25 and this ad involved only bands on Warner owned and distributed labels.
It was hosted by Allan Cross who's an encyclopedia of music info and hosts a radio show "Ongoing History of New Music." However, he is an asshead when it comes to the Mats and Husker Du, who he only ever mentions in passing as pretty much a footnote to the history of new music. In fact on one episode of the radio show about the most important moments on modern rock he mentioned REM and Sonic Youth's signings with majors as really important step, as if they were the first of their kind when it was actually the Huskers and the Mats.
Anyways, he continued this on the infomercial when got into the Goo Goo Dolls and Green day and saying they wouldn't be where they are without their heros. So Mr.Cross why in the f*ck didn't you mention Husker Du and The Replacements, it's not like you couldn't, 'cause they were on Warners. Meanwhile he then proceeded to go about how good the Used and Billy Talent are.
Sorry for the rant but his ignoring of The Replacements and Husker Du just pisses me off.

The Milwaukee newspaper rock critic did an online chat:
Q: Matt of Milwaukee - Gemma, you are a fox. Will go to see Paul Westerberg with me? A: Gemma Tarlach - Uh, thank you. But no thank you.

Hold music, that's good. Shoulda been "Hold My Life" (maybe someone could use that commercially ala "Waitin for Somebody") This is a nice thread for truly random mats occurences, which by strict definition should not include google-newsing "paul westerberg" every couple days, but IF anybody had been randomly reading the LA Weekly's "Heavy Metal Rec Room" you would have come across this exchange between the feature's psuedonymous metal heads: FAFNIR: After the age of 35 or so, rock stars need bigger and bigger sunglasses. It’s the eyes that really betray the age. ODIN: Is that right? FAFNIR: Even Paul Westerberg has big sunglasses now. Sifa and I went to see him the other night, because she’s a huge fan. ODIN: Don’t tell Freya that. She really wanted to go. FAFNIR: It was bad. ODIN: Here’s the real question: What if you were Paul Westerberg? Was it okay? FAFNIR: Man, that’s a good question. I don’t think I can answer that. It’s almost like that’s what he goes for, is that kind of messed-up experience. It was successful for Sifa, cause she falls for that. [Now Fafnir is acting jealous.] She wants to be his mom, you know, and take care of him, because he’s such a fuck-up. That’s how he’s always got girlfriends, I’m sure, too. By pretending that he’s really fucked up, and he really needs their help. www.laweekly.com/ink/05/17/music-burk.php

I just remembered this utterly random Paul/Replacements sighting from about three years ago. (And we didn't exist three years ago , so it still counts.)
Every year my local paper hosts a pet photo contest. One of the winners that year was a tabby named Westerberg. If I recall correctly he was quite fond of naps and Animal Planet.

At about 3:30am I was watching the Ramones Documentary "End of the Century" and they start talking about the Ramones influenced bands popping up all over the country. Bands like Black Flag in LA and the Dead Kennedys and they panned over the map to Minneapolis and mentioned The Replacements. My buddy I was watching it with said, "oh you're going to like whats coming up next." And sure enough a nod to the Mats.

Heard "Trumpet Clip" in a restaurant at lunch today. guy had "Eventually" in his CD changer. If you're ever in Pittsfield, MA, have a burger at The Lantern.
Re: REM, do I remember hearing that they promised the Mats an opening slot on one of their late 80s tours, but then reneged because they thot the band was out of control?

The Replacements almost got taken off of their 83 tour, so it wouldn't be surprising. Edit: Gotten? What the heck?

HORSE THEY RODE IN ON From the "Item World" feature in the MPLS Strib's Friday Freetime section: Instead of the New York stories told on his band's first CD, the Hold Steady's Craig Finn (ex-Lifter Puller) sang a lot about the Twin Cities while previewing a new CD at the Triple Rock last week. "Where you went through puberty is where you're from, not where you were born," Finn said as he introduced songs about going to high school in Edina ("Hornets") and late-night access TV in Minneapolis ("Hoodrats"). While bragging about seeing the Replacements at 7th Street Entry in 1986, Finn saved us from another 'Mats testimonial and instead talked up that concert's opening act, Soul Asylum. "They were a great band. ... I feel that's forgotten in Minneapolis, and it's definitely forgotten in New York." (C.R.) www.startribune.com/stories/1377/5297796.html

Joseph Arthur Tue Mar 29 Preview With a human, almost punk voice trapped inside overblown beats and synthesizers, Joseph Arthur should be an intriguing drama live--imagine Paul Westerberg clawing his way out of the middle of an Electric Light Orchestra album, and you've got an idea of the odd appeal of Our Shadows Will Remain (Vector). Polly Paulusma has the Oil of Olay voice, overactive melodies, and cute inflections to make her a star in the cutthroat world of soft rock. 18+. $10/$12 at the door. 7:00 p.m. --Peter S. Scholtes The Quest Ascot Room 110 5th St N, Mpls.; 612.338.3383 www.citypages.com/alist/summary.aspI'm fairly sure John Lennon said the Beatles would have sounded like ELO had they stayed together. So there's six degrees to Nowhere Man.

Anybody ever see the movie "My Chaffeur"? It's one of the cheapo films Deborah Foreman made after "Valley Girl", sometime in '85 or '86. "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" is featured in this film, along with a Fleshtones tune, "What's So New About You" The film has a few good lines, and Penn and Teller(!). Does anyone know if a complete listing of movies featuring 'mats/Westerberg tunes is available? We all know of "Say Anything", "Singles","Saved", "Can't Hardly Wait","Tough Guys", Jerry Maguire", "Feeling Minnesota","Airheads", and now "My Chaffuer", but is there some website that might have a more complete lisiting? "Silver Naked Ladies" was in Tommy Boy. I remember being shocked in the theater when I heard it . I just Googled it to be sure. Then there's the whole Heathers Westerberg High thing and Christian Slater's "Well, color me impressed" line.

"Century" had just come on the car stereo when I swung around a corner and there was a guy wearing a sweatshirt that said "Century" in big letters.
Good, huh?

Was it "I Don't Know" that was in the movie "Hot to Trot", starring Bobcat and a talking horse?

I don't know how random this really is but a few weeks ago my friend put I'll be You on a jukebox in a bar and we were drunkenly and loudly singing along with it when I looked over at a television in the corner. There were the Mats, on SNL, doing Can't Hardly Wait.
We went over to the side of the bar and continued our singing while we stared at the television sorta slack-jawed and amazed.
I should lay off the booze.

Seriously? Was he sporting the orange vest and hand held stop sign? No vest, but he was wearing a white baseball cap and shades and protecting the lives of two boys about waist high.
