Back to sighting random replacements ... from the Seattle Weekly:
"In 1992, the year Singles froze Seattle in celluloid as a haven for slackers fixated on bad relationships and double espressos, British guitar band the Wedding Present were cranking out a single a month for RCA. Over hyperactive fretting and anxious lyrics that might have befitted a B-side to Paul Westerberg's "Waiting for Somebody," these songs—later compiled on The Hit Parade—sounded like one side of a tense phone call: "Are you being unfaithful to me?" barked vocalist David Gedge, opening the book of love to its ugliest page."
... except, "Waiting for Somebody" WAS a b-side

When they went to a commercial break during last night's (4/16/05) Saturday Night Live broadcast, they featured their SNL logo on a shot of a light pole plastered with a Tommy Stinson flyer. I wonder if it was just a random shot they used or if the photographer specifically choose the shot becuase of the flyer.

Yeah i put some songs in but even though it was free, it still kind of sucked. In my opinion that is.
I think Lee would have liked it. They had Bright Eyes

At least we weren't paying for it to suck. And I have a skewed view of jukeboxes. If it has anything I like on it that won't drive me nuts within the first half hour, it doesn't suck, as most of the jukeboxes here frequent shit like Dave Matthews or "Achy Breaky Heart".

Son at 8th grade track meet:
He's playing his walkman between events and runs out of battery, spots another kid from another school playing a walkman, approaches him to see if he might have some spare batteries.
Son: Hey, would you have any extra batteries? Other: No Son: So, what are you listening to? Other: Some band you've never heard of. Son: Oh? Who? Other: The Replacements Son: Oh, I've heard of them. Other: Oh yeah, what's one of their songs? Son: Kiss Me on the Bus Other: Wow, you know I wanted to see Paul Westerberg last night in Columbus but my parents would let me as it was a school night. Son: Did you know he is playing in Cincinnati on Thursday? Other: No, I might have to check it out.
So I have to figure the other kid's parents have successfully "educated" their son on the merits of the Replacements. I'll be curious to see if the kid makes it to the show. And at least 2 14 year olds at this tiny track meet knew their Mats.

another KMOTB:
This time I'm at the Minnesota Twins game, not just listening on the radio. Just before Johan Santana comes on to pitch his 10th strikeout in the top of the 7th inning, the Metrodome P.A. system rings out with Kiss Me on the Bus.
Actually it was kind of quiet. They played Boston, Bruce, the B-52s heck even Chumbawumba loud, but our boys seemed toned down.
Still, a corner has been turned with all this Twins exposure. I see a major hit any day now.

I'm so disappointed in myself that I didn't recognize "As Far As I Know" playing on the TV/satellite radio station thing in the bar Saturday night until more than halfway thru. In my defence I'd of course been drinking and was stoned, but depressed 'cause neither have been making me feel good lately. The drugs just ain't been workin'.

I heard 'I Will Dare,' 'Alex Chilton,' and 'Kiss Me On The Bus' this morning in honor of Chris Mars's 44th birthday.
I found a copy of Stereo in the St. Louis Public Library yesterday--but since they computerized their system instead of the little stamper thing (I know, we live in the stone-age around these parts) I couldn't tell you the last time it was checked out.

Great architecture, clean streets, culture -- it must be Minneapolis by John King San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, April 28, 2005 Everything I know about cities was confirmed this month by a visit to Minneapolis: Street life thrives if you give it a chance. The nation's 47th-largest city is known for the Twins baseball team, Mary Tyler Moore -- and an intricate web of skyways, second-floor connections that link more than 50 downtown blocks. Skyways were even immortalized in a punk ballad by the Replacements, though native son Prince has yet to weigh in. sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/04/28/DDGAECFM3F1.DTL

Not quite a replacements sighting but close (artist who did Tim cover) ... How Does '80s Art Look Now? How much of value did that big decade leave behind? By RICHARD LACAYO TIME magazine "I try to forget the '80s as much as possible," says Robert Longo. "I was a total egomaniac, a lunatic child at that point." Early in the decade, Longo became famous for large-scale realistic drawings of business-suited men and women in lurching, heaving postures--a not-bad portrait of the young middle classes being buffeted by their times. Midway through the decade, taste changed, and a cooler brand of conceptual art came into favor. His star plummeted. "A lot of us grew up in public," he says. "In a weird way that often means you have to fail in public too. I became a poster child for the '80s." In the past few years, Longo has begun showing work again in New York Citydrawings of Sigmund Freud's apartment, waves and atom-bomb blasts. "An artist should know art history," he now concludes. "Shock value only lasts so long." ... Even before Schnabel began directing, Longo directed a film, Johnny Mnemonic, starring Keanu Reeves in a futuristic film noir. Ok I know I shouldn't post everytime I hear the band on the radio but damn the Current played Customer today. Was really not expecting that. The last time I heard that on the radio was when my friend got interviewed and did a bit of guest DJing on RadioK (college radio station).

I was watching SNL the other night(don't say it, I know)and they flashed a Tommy Stinson poster on lampost during one of their commercial bumpers. I thought "Hot Damn! I picked the right Sat. night to watch this unfunny show again." Well, 50 cent shows up on screen on their way back from commercial a little later. What a freakin' tease that was. It was like they were saying "Look! There's a Tommy Stinson poster! He was on the show when it was unfunny in the 80's, but at least we had good musical guests as consolation." Seeing that poster on SNL sort of reminds me of when you see someone like Avril Lavigne with a Ramones t-shirt. They know what cool is, but the only genuine quality that they have to exhibit it, they bought.
