Must've been a real humdinger... Where are ya people? Yeah, I'm starting to think those Virginia people work for a living, or something.

The switchblade came out again - a crazy show, I have a picture of Paul with blood running down his arm. I'll do what I can tonight to get some info up but I am into hour 10 at the office and still haven't left you and I need to watch 24 tonight so it's iffy.

This will be short, but perhaps I'll expand it at a later date.
Norfolk, 5/1/05
Though I haven't seen any of the other dates on this tour, I would probably classify this as one of the "train wreck" nights. Apart from the last few songs, I can't think of any that were played with any attempt of accuracy on Paul's part. Michael, Kevin, and Jim were as solid as could be expected in trying to follow what Paul was doing. I was going to write down the setlist, but I got caught up in observing the train wreck, so I'll try to remember as much as I can (in no particular order): Stain Yer Blood (opener), Achin' to Be (less than a verse), AAA, Live Forever, Different Drum, Love Untold, I Will Dare, Merry Go Round, Skyway, Little Mascara, Sweet Virginia, Waitress in the Sky, As Far As I Know, Making Me Go, Dirty Diesel, Swingin Party, Let the Bad Times Roll, High Time, Eyes Like Sparks (w/ Jim on vocals), Now I Wonder, Got a Mind to Give Up Livin', Alex Chilton, Can't Hardly Wait.
Personal highlights of the show: Sweet Virginia, Got a Mind to Give Up Livin' (very nice solo by Paul), Now I Wonder, and Can't Hardly Wait.
Even reading the review of previous recent dates didn't prepare me for the absolute mess that the show was, but it was still quite enjoyable. The knife did come out, and everyone ended up getting cut...I believe Paul said "I cut them because I love them"...Paul appeared to get the worst of it, with blood covering his forearm for the whole show.

Pictures are coming...gave them (and the vid of the cutting!) to Kathy. if anyone was at the show and asked me for pics (like the girl with the Star glasses) send me an email and I can forward you the hi-res pics. Also, if anyone happened to tape this show, PLEASE, for the love of all things Westerberg, let me know!.... Andy (amahon@odu.edu)

well i got an eye full front and center , i thought paul was going to knife the sound man! then (let it bleed!) i could'nt believe my eyes ,i had a feeling this was the wreck. but i still enjoyed it. it tightened up towards the end ,and even cooler during little mascara, paul dropped the mike, could'nt get it back in the stand, and proceeded to throw it at some dude and myself, and said"here you fu*kin sing it " well next thing you know we where. what topped it off,was when about four of us where singing as loud as we could, paul jumps in and finishes the song with us ,totally awsome !

Ok, Ill make another attempt at a "review" of this one....as stated above, yeah, Paul wasn't locked into a written setlist...he a) jumped into the crowd b) sang one laying down with his face near the drumkit c) played one on his knees d) pulled out the knife and did the bloodbrother thing with the whole band.....if you call that a train wreck, so be it. I call it an entertaining side note for the best Westerberg show I have ever seen....and I have seen at least one show on every tour. The music...yeah there were the staples....Achin, Mascara, Regular, Chilton, Love Untold (personal fav of my wife), Psychopharmacology, Mr. Rabbit, Skyway....and a bunch more...hope someone posts the setlist....
then the highlights in my mind: Stain yer blood, cover of Sweet Virginia, Rocketman....and my personal fave, he played Men Without Ties....for gods sake, ive been shouting that one for years...once he tried but couldnt remember the chords....got it this time. Amazing.
Ok, so it wasnt conventional. He made stuff up....forgot some lyrics....but it truely looked like he was having fun. The crowd was into it...and I love the thought that he makes the set up as he goes along....the band was rockin...even though they didn't know EVERYTHING Paul tried to play. Isnt that what this whole tour with the band is about?
Drunk or not, trainwreck or not, I would love to see, and pay good money to see, EVERY other show on this tour.

I was there with my wife and 2 son's 13 and 11 . I have only seen Paul with a band (not The Replacements) one time before and it was pretty much the same as this . He always forgets the lines , stops in the middle of a song , curses the band , ad libs etc. That is part of the appeal of him to me any way . He did seem to be having fun . He did a straight on version of Rocket Man with star sunglasses he got from a teenage girl in front and actually handed his glasses to her and said " I actually need these to see". The only song that was un decipherable to me any way was Little Mascara . I had know idea that is what they were trying to play until the crowd got the microphone and sang the chorus . Other than changing some lyrics and forgetting some the rest of the songs sounded right on the mark. I really could have done without the cutting each other blood brother thing . My oldest son said the best song was Alex Chilton and the youngest liked Mr. Rabbit . We had a great time and this was their first concert . They each bought a t-shirt and after the show a roadie gave them a drum stick and guitar pick . We went to the bus to meet him . Met lot's of nice people in line waiting (sorry didn't get any names) . The bass player and guitar player came walking right down the sidewalk and stopped for autographs . They were very friendly . They asked my son's their names and how they liked the show . Also I guess he was Paul's manager gave my youngest son the bloody shirt Paul had been wearing on stage . Paul was very nice James(my son with the bloody shirt ) had the nerve to ask him for the green jacket he wore . Paul just said No, No, No . He signed the boys t-shirts ticket stubs and bloody shirt . We thanked him for a great show and shook his hand . My whole family geatly enjoyed the show and wish we could see more shows on the tour . P.S. (If any one has a picture of my son with Paul's shirt on getting it signed please let me know ) . We had a camera but my other son Trent was the camera man and basically just took a few shots of Paul sitting by himself on the steps of his bus . I have been lurking here for years but never signed up to post until today .

Wonder if we'll ever "really" know what happened at this show. All the info seems to contradict each other at one point or another...

I wrote on a Post-It note:
"Dear Boss,
John can't come to work today because he got too #$&!#! up at the Paul Westerberg concert last night."
Handed it to Paul sitting on the bus step after the 5/1 Norfolk show and said "Paul, can you sign this so I can get out of work tomorrow?" He looked up at me, laughed and signed it. Now I have a sick note signed by Paul that excuses me from work the day after any of his shows! Like a 'get out of jail free card'!
The Norfolk show was everything everyone described above: loose, tight, inspired, sloppy, bloody (!) etc. but one thing all of us who were there can probably agree on: IT WAS OVER WAY TOO SOON!!!!! Yeah, so the place wasn't packed, so what? I saw The Replacements in Richmond, Va. a few months after 'Let It Be' came out in a small bar with only a hundred people (maybe) in it!!!! I'll start worrying when I go to a Paul Westerberg show surrounded by thousands of people! Then I'll know he's really messing up!!!!! You know, 'the sweet smell that they adore, I think I'd rather smother'!!!!!!!!!

"I used to be a NorFolker ..."
How do you say "Norfolk," to an answering machine or anything else?

Wonder if we'll ever "really" know what happened at this show. All the info seems to contradict each other at one point or another... Everyone is right. I can't even come up with the words to describe it. It was fun and it was great to see Paul after 18 years (last time on '87 PTMM tour). Maybe it *was* a train wreck. My thought was this is what it must have been like back in the early days w/Bob. He was loose, but there were flashes of brilliance as well. The knife thing made me a bit uncomfortable because it truly seemed like Paul was somewhere else. Also, while it cannot compare, the news of Dimebag Darrell getting shot and killed on stage still lurks in the back of my mind and makes me think that anything is possible. Besides, the sight of blood makes me queasy to begin with... Overall, I wish we had a NYC #2 show. There's nothing like watching a band when they're firing on all cylinders. On the other hand, we got a "unique" show -- one that isn't scripted and can change at a moment's whim. And that counts for quite a bit in my eyes. (back to lurking)

Moving here from Missouri, I was told "NO-F*CK" was the proper way to say it....however, NorFolker sounds better to me nowadays.....

It's "Nah-fik" But I like Nah-f**k.
I lived there for 10 years. Saw the Mats twice (once with young whippersnapper's, Uncle Tupelo). I also saw that Richmond show. It was at Rockets, I believe. That was the night Bob sat out the second set, in the crowd, if memory serves.
I believe the central point to "train-wreck vs dead-on, full-throttle" shows is this:
He (Westerberg) and his band are having a blast on this tour! For that, we should all be ecstatic. Given the alternative of the hermit, basement musician who barely pokes his head out , vs this, I say, huzzah! ;D

Did anyone see a review in the paper ? I bought a paper Monday morning before heading back to Richmond . It had an article on The Norva (the venue itself) but no review of the show . Hasn't been one in the Richmond paper either .
