Friday August 16th 2002 also at The Norva. Before that, way, way back in the summer of '93 just after "14 Songs" came out. Now THAT was some show!!!! Anyone see it? Was it outdoors in the pouring and pounding rain? If so, I was soaking wet and crushed up against the fence in front. Went home with big and colorful bruises and a speeding ticket for souvenirs.

Yes! It was at Towne Point Park right next to Waterside and it was FREE! It rained pretty hard at some point I remember. It was a great show though. I can't remember who was in the band but the guitar player Paul had at the time was phenomenal. He was in some other band too and can't remember what band he was in. Do you? Also, have any of you 'NorFolkers' heard of the bands 'Birds On Drugs' or 'Patio Boys'? Boy, now THERE were two interesting local bands!!!!!!!!

Did anyone see a review in the paper ? I bought a paper Monday morning before heading back to Richmond . It had an article on The Norva (the venue itself) but no review of the show . Hasn't been one in the Richmond paper either . Nothing as of today... if it were to be published, my guess is we would have seen it by now. I checked PilotOnline and nothing there as well. I guess they didn't think it worthy of sending a reviewer over.

Yep. The same. Did you ever see any of their shows in Norfolk? They actually opened for our band a couple of times (IIRC). I played bass in Starving Artists.

the pilot is a lousy paper in general, music they really don't do at all. I don't even think they reviewed the Elvis Costello show the week before. I have only seen Paul at the Norva, I'm afraid I came to this at around the "All shook down" cd and was living abroad until 94, so alot of the Mats references are lost on me.
My daughter was the one with the rocketman glasses. My guess is at 14 she'll be hard pressed to enjoy another concert quite as much as this one. No more ampitheatres for her.
Train wreck? Don't think so. A number of half sung songs, verses seemed to disappear. On a couple of songs the chords got flubbed but unlike those who said it didn't seem to matter to Paul there were a few winces with the false notes. Could also live without the blood brothers thing, but will optimistically look at it as just stage drama, especially since the guitarist was squeezing the heck out of his elbow to get a drop of blood out. Still a truly great night of rock and roll. Loose, a little crazy, but beats pretty much anything I've seen since Springsteen in 77(sorry, recovering Springsteen fan). Seemed they were having a hell of good time up there. I brought three friends with no Westerberg knowledge, the're all fans now. One is trying evangelize anyone she meets.

It was a guy named Dave Minihan (sp?) from a Boston band called the Neighborhoods. That's right! Thanks! Boy was he good! I think The Neighborhoods may (?) have played here in Norfolk (?) at a place called King's Head Inn (?). Um, while I'm at it.....do you know who played drums in Paul's '93 band? Who the bass player was? Thanks! PS I promise not to derail the Norfolk 5/1 Norva show thread anymore after this!

I didn't go out to the clubs like Ralph & Bert, so you'd probably not remember/know me. I'm George and I was the first bass player (84-86).

I don't want to turn this into the "Josh Freese" thread but I did see where is on tour with Sting currently. Wow, what a frickin resume that dude has. PW, Devo, Perfect Circle, Indigo Girls, Smashing Pumpkins, Our Lady Peace... an amazing drummer.
