In a curious note, the sheet of paper that was taped to Paul's mike was not his set list -- it was hand--written (not by Paul) lyrics to "Johnny Bye Bye" by Springsteen. I have no idea why that was, but if Paul had actually covered Springsteen.......

Great pictures Meri, thanks so much for posting them. At first I thought "Is he seriously wearing a pink polkadot shirt?", but then I realized it must actually have been red because his guitar appears pink as well. Anyway, he looks great and I'd like to echo Marz with a "C'mon Paul, tour again!"

Paul made a point of saying several times that it was a Roger Troutman song and mentioned he had a hard time finding the lyrics for it. (I wonder how he did that without the web...hmmm). He didn't do the funky R&B version, he did it as a slow ballad. Here are the lyrics: Hey lady, Let me tell you you're fine I can't live my life, without you, oh baby Everytime I see you walking by I get a thrill But you don't notice me, but in time you will I must make you understand I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Yes I do baby I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Want to be your man Better not pass me by Cause if you do you know I'll cry - please, oh baby Cause what I've got to say is sealed with a kiss And a wedding ring - wedding ring My mind is blind at times I can't see anyone but you Those other girls don't matter knowin' they can't spoil my view I must make you understand I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Yes I do baby I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Want to be your man Words could never say what I feel It's too intense I've tried, I've tried, I've tried, I've tried to tell you how I feel but I get mixed up - so mixed up My mind is blind at times I can't see anyone but you Those other girls don't matter knowin' they can't spoil my view I must make you understand I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Yes I do baby I want to be your man - I want to be your man I want to be your man - Want to be your man I want to be your man - I want to be your man

Oh boy, after listening to that sample, I really want to hear PW's version. Did he pull out a vocoder for the refrain?

Paul made a point of saying several times that it was Roger Troutman song, maybe it was that guy covering the Beatles, I don't know, but that's how Paul billed it. same title, different song. It's a 80's smooth R&B thing udner the name Zapp & Roger.

No, he made it his own, no funk Paul does have the knack for the unexpected cover. And he really does seem to have a huge knowledge of all genres of music. hearing his version, I never in a million years would have guessed what the orginal sounded like.

I Like the lyrics. The other song is more or a rocker and being that the Stones cover it, I thought this was a gimme. Guess I was wrong.

You know what's funny, this is the first Roger Troutman site I found: www.rogertroutman.net/Now if Paul could cover one of THAT guy's songs and make me like, I'd be color very impressed.

Did he only play those First Act guitars from the store? Yeah, he only played first act guitars. When I asked about playing AFTER the show, his only option appeared to be the piano in the hotel lobby so I'd guess he didn't even pack any of his own guitars. Minehan played this very pretty guitar called Lola, from the first act store. Earlier, a salesman told me that he would get me in if I bought one.... price tag--$1,500.

from today's Boston Globe[/color]: Guitar studio hosts a smashing showIt was back to the future for fans of Paul Westerberg as the former Replacements frontman played a short, lively show Friday at the new Back Bay studio opened by First Act, the Boston-based guitar maker. (Formerly a Fender and Gibson guy, Westerberg's been endorsing First Act since he bought one of its axes on his last tour.) On a stage the size of a dining-room table, Westerberg was backed by former Neighborhoods singer-guitarist Dave Minehan and played to a crowd that included Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz, singer Juliana Hatfield, and O Positive's Dave Herlihy. In a nod to the devastation done by Hurricane Katrina, Westerberg closed with a raucous rendition of ''House of the Rising Sun," ending the spooky tune about New Orleans by smashing his guitar.~~Meri

Paul smashed the new First Act Paul Westerberg model guitar at the end of the set (guitar will be in stores beginning of next year). Westerberg model? I'd better start saving now.. CF
