I keep reading the set lists, and am saddened that Gun Shy is never played, and I keep hoping that 23 Years pops up when playing solo acoustic versions of A Reg or Skyway. Those might be my two favorite off of Folker, and I hope they haven't been retired already

I love GunShy too and I think it would KILL live. honestly, there IS something weird about him NOT playing gun shy. there must be a reason... because it is SCREAMING to be played in concert. memphis, maybe?

I love GunShy too and I think it would KILL live. I don't normally yell out requests at shows but I yelled out for Gun Shy at all 5 shows I went to on this leg and at the first and third Pantages shows. I want to see that live so bad! For some reason I'm thinking the band didn't learn that one.

Oh and another note that maybe I missed being discussed earlier but I'm a bit surprised My Dad hasn't shown up. I believe that was played at all three Pantages shows, I thought it would be included in the lineup. Not necessarily complaining just pointing out.
And yes I also would love to hear him break into 23 years ago during the acoustic set. Especially towards the end of the show I can see the emotion actually making it to the stage.

That is surprising. He played it on London too.

That is surprising. He played it on London too. Yeah, he played My Dad in London--also forgot the lyrics. He just stops shortly after beginning the song and says something like, "I have no idea what's next." At which point a roadie came out with a notebook or something and held it next to him while he sang the thing. A classic PW moment... But yeah, I would LOVE it if he played 23 Years, Dirt to Mud, Baby Learns to Crawl, and/or $100 Groom. Those are some of my favorites but I don't think I've seen them on any setlist, and the Stereo tunes I just pointed out were rarely played on that tour either...

A classic PW moment... . he got someone on front row to hold the book - they seemed to have their arms in the air for ages. must have been awful if they started to ache and all you could think of was, oh no, i hope i don't drop this thing...my dad was great.

I keep reading the set lists, and am saddened that Gun Shy is never played Been feeling the same way. Odd, since it would rock live. Also wierd that "Waiting..." hasn't made it into the set list. He started of all three of the Mpls shows with it, & it was a regular durning the CFMT tour.

Nothing from Dead Man Shake either. I think Get A Move On and Vampires and Failures would be excellent.
Also more Mono stuff. Where's Eyes Like Sparks or Kickin' The Stall.
Then there's My Daydream and Pine Box.

I know this has been discussed elsewhere on this board, but I just had a realization as I was reading this thread: I think that I would actually NOT be disappointed if I went to a Westerberg show and heard NOTHING by The Replacements - where Paul performed songs only from his solo body of work! The man has written SO MANY great songs since the end of The 'Mats... I wonder: does Paul play The Replacements stuff because HE wants to, or does he do it because he thinks we EXPECT it?

It's probably a little bit of both. That and he plays only the songs he can remember!

I wonder: does Paul play The Replacements stuff because HE wants to, or does he do it because he thinks we EXPECT it? I am WAY more inclined to think he plays 'em because he wants to: I don't believe he's at a point in his career where there would be any other reason. He's a maverick of sorts, and playing old songs for the audience's sake just doesn't fit. John Fogerty and Al Green - each for their own reasons - stopped playing their old stuff at one point in their careers. And each started again, with both saying something along the lines of "Those are my songs, they're my legacy..." You figure Paul has got to be proud of his Replacements material.

Add me to the ever growing list of disappointed "Gun Shy" lovers. I couldn't wait to hear that live but I had so much fun at first LA show I didn't realize until I was driving home, "Hey! He didn't play Gun Shy!?!" This is an interesting subject because it is clearly a new fan favorite and one of the best songs on "Folker" in my opinion. I thought maybe the band didn't learn it but His Only Friends are too good not to be able to learn this one pretty fast. I don't play guitar but it just seems like a pretty simple Stonesy riff over and over. I hope he plays it at some point on this tour (and someone records it:)).

Has he ever played Let's Not Belong at a show? That had a similar fan appeal. It seems like there's a category of rockers he might consider very near misses that he doesn't haul out live. That or, the "former whore who's peein' on Ajax" asked him not to play it.
And 23 Years -- great call on the missing tunes by the way, A Reg, probably my two Folker faves too -- that song seems a bit like a "Blood on the Tracks" song. Dylan never played "Meet Me in the Morning" or "Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts"(!) live, and "Buckets of Rain" only once.
Is anyone else surprised Waitress in the Sky gets played so much? I mean, it rocks, I love it ... I'm just surprised.

I am going to the Dallas and Austin shows. He can drop any Replacements songs for these three which I don't think I have seen on a setlist: 1. Gun Shy, of course. 2. Looking Out Forever 3. Crackle and Drag--full, rocking band version

I have a hard time believing that Paul plays I Will Dare, Can't Hardly Wait or Alex Chilton because he wants to. No friggin way. He's doing it for the audience. He knows how much we are paying to see him and he gets a big response from the crowd from them so he's making us happy.
He knows they are great songs but I don't think he really likes playing them for the trillionth time.

Hmmm.....so you have a hard time believing that "he wants to" give the audience what it wants.... No, why he plays them is to make others happy (not himself). He makes himself happy by playing off the cuff covers and probably a song like Let the bad times roll which I know he is very fond of. Michael B said it best in a post about how Paul is a creator and gets bored easily by doing things over and over. I'm paraphrasing here. I'll add that sure, Paul wants his audience to be happy and get their monies worth and that's why he plays the classics. Personally I would like to see him play exactly what makes him happy. If that's all covers so be it.

I wonder if he doesn't play some of these songs because he tried 'em and they didn't fly the first few attempts..........I saw him try Black Eyed Susan in Chicago in 96, and he forgot the words and got super pissed off and quit playing it......and I don't know if he ever played it again at a show.
I know the Stones had so many odd disasterous occurances every time they tried to play Shattered in concert that they banned it from the setlist !
I wish Paul would play: Gunshy, These Are The Days, Century, Ain't Got Me (which is killer when he plays it live), Hide N Seekin, Angels Walk, Let's Not Belong, Between Love and Like, Baby Learns To Crawl, Only Lie Worth Telling, Boring Enormous, We May Be The Ones (A GREAT SONG), Waiting For Somebody, One Wink At A Time, Happy Town, Nobody (IMPOSSIBLY GREAT AND SAD).
Having gotten to see three shows so far, and thinking about traveling to the midwest to see more, I am super happy to have seen Paul play Folkstar, Let The Bad Times Roll, Knockin On Mine and As Far As I Know. All of these have been awesome.
