I've seen Westerberg eight times now, and I've still never seen "If Only You Were Lonely" live. Boo-f'in-hoo, I know. But it's weird cuz I know he plays it from time to time when the spirit move him.
However, he's played "Alex Chilton" every time and every time it has Rocked Balls -- definitely not a tune that's ever sounded like he was doin' it because he had to.

This is something i'm constantly debating in my mind. I think that he's moved on from the Mats so much that I wonder how he can want to play those songs. But then I also think, they are still his songs and maybe with this backing band they are sounding more like he intended them to sound while he was writing them. You know, this together, this rocking, this partially sober. But I think he'd be surprised at how many people there are out there that wouldn't mind if he dropped some of them to hear solo songs. Honestly, if he says he hates I Will Dare, I have no problem not hearing him play it again. I'd rather have him put forth a song he really gets into and that makes it a better show.

I wonder if he doesn't play some of these songs because he tried 'em and they didn't fly the first few attempts.......... If this were the case he'd have about two songs left in his set. ;D

Nothing from Dead Man Shake either. I think Get A Move On and Vampires and Failures would be excellent. Also more Mono stuff. Where's Eyes Like Sparks or Kickin' The Stall. Then there's My Daydream and Pine Box. Plus Let''s Not Belong Together.

As far as Mono goes I've been addicted to Between Love and Like lately. Wouldn't mind hearing that gem live either.

On one of the 2002 boots, he's playing Between Love and Like, and suddenly he says, "We're going straight to it" (meaning, I think, skipping the second verse for the chorus or something), but he says it like he's talking to his band. I totally agree. Must. Be. Played. Please.

"Let's Not Belong Together" (like the up-tempo S/M demo version)
and...yes, I know some think it's filler, but I'd love to hear Paul crank out a chunky "Soldier Of Misfortune"

The only tune I screamed for that I really would have loved to hear was "Knockin' 'Em Back". I just absolutely love that song.
I screamed "Play something off of Sucaine" at the Denver show, and lo and behold, his next tune was an acoustic "Born For Me". Lovely. 'course, that was a weighted request having looked at the setlist from the previous shows.

we never actually learned "gunshy", even though we discussed playing it. however, paul did play an acoustic version of "23 years ago", a couple of nights ago, and we played a full band version of it in dallas, if i remember correctly. "my dad" got removed 'cause there's alot of words, and it's difficult to memorize....which is the same reason that "we may be the ones" was not a contender for this tour. "let's not belong together" and "between love and like" are two songs which, to paul, resemble other better songs in his catalog, so he feels no need to perform them. i think that "eventually", as an album, is probably regarded by paul to be somewhat of a flop, and he probably thinks that most of the material on that album is throw away... we were gonna work up "angels walk" and "ain't got me"'cause of the "besterberg" greatest hits package coming out soon, but he just never got excited about playing them. however, we did play around with "you've had it with you" and i think we played "one around the weekend", somewhere, recently.... i personally was surprised and pleased by the reception to the "folker" material....people seemed to know the words to everything we played from new album. i took the impression from several posts that i read on MWT that most of you really didn't like "folker". and, paul was trying to convince me that the record was dead, and nobody liked it. he seemed surprised, too. but also, i know that sometimes you have to really hear songs live before you totally understand them...
we certainly appreciate all of you that travelled cross-country to see our little spectacle of a show... and hope to see you again in april...

Well Michael, I think that I'll disagree with him on this one. I love Folker, and I think it's a really good record. I don't think it's "dead" or it's a "flop" in any way. I don't think it's like Eventually either. It's a fun, rocking type of record. Lookin' and 23 Years are some of my favorite songs, ever. I just really like that record. And I think a lot of people on this board really like it. I have heard that opinion in here before. And I think I can probably point out the people that don't like Folker, there's not that many, but of course I won't ;D And I think most of us will travel cross-country to see you guys play, and I think I speak for everyone here when I say... Thanks for playing sooo many shows and going everywhere! And for rocking out every night! They're all such awesome shows! Just get to NYC already, jeez...

"let's not belong together" and "between love and like" are two songs which, to paul, resemble other better songs in his catalog, so he feels no need to perform them. I honestly can't think what those 'better songs' could be. Unless it's just that 'Between Love and Like' shares a riff with 'Silent Film Star'? But then that's rarely played too. Come to think of it, there's never really that much from 'Mono', which I think is kinda weird seeing as it has so many catchy upbeat rocker type things on it that'd be perfectly suited to playing live. i took the impression from several posts that i read on MWT that most of you really didn't like "folker". and, paul was trying to convince me that the record was dead, and nobody liked it. he seemed surprised, too. but also, i know that sometimes you have to really hear songs live before you totally understand them... I think a lot of people slammed it without giving it a proper chance. It's a deep record and it's a pretty uncompromising sound and maybe some people couldn't get past that. People on here do seem to prefer the more user-friendly live versions. It's quite possibly my favourite Westerberg record but I know not everyone has as much time as I do to sit around and listen to records and really soak yourself in them and let them grow on you.

This is kinda like beating a dead horse from most of what i've read the only real critisim on Folker was in the mixing. the two tunes that were released early "AFAIK and Looking Out in Heaven" were such ear candy (in a good way) that i was expecting a different direction. Folker definitly ends up in the catergory of Pauls best work and the songs sound amazing live. I hope Paul never shelves any of these songs.

Please consider this one vote for "had it with you". It might be my son's favorite and I hope to take him to the Covington/Cincinnati show.
Besides, I can already hear the rave up!

This is kinda like beating a dead horse Yeah, I wasn't trying to start that discussion again... Just felt it was a shame that the guys think the record has been badly received.

Agreed. I think there's more people out there that dig Folker than people who don't. Most of the complaints I've heard aren't song related, either, but more about the drumming and whatnot. The record was a keeper from day one for me...

Yeah, I wasn't trying to start that discussion again... Just felt it was a shame that the guys think the record has been badly received. I think the reception of the Folker songs on the tour so far has cleared that up Now if we can just get "Gun Shy" and "Folk Star" into rotation....
