That's about the 5th time you've told us this. We get it. We're jealous. We know we're geezers. Quit rubbing it in.

Good one, matsrule. Actually, last night it seems we got to see the good, bad and ugly all in one show.
In the morning light, 'in a mood' is probably right, it's just that Paul's behavior was reminiscent of the drunk Replacements shows that I was at. I was in the last row on the floor so I missed the glitches earlier in the show, the only hint that I got that Paul was 'in a mood' was near the end of the main set where he changed some lyrics. Then during "Here Comes a Regular" it seemed like he really wasn't into it and if I remember right stopped at one point and said something like, "That yell was more in tune than any of Jim's vocals." And boy, did the place go silent after Paul told that story about his friend's suicide. You could feel the energy get sucked out of the crowd. It felt like he was almost purposefully sabotaging the show.
I understand Paul can be a cranky f@cker and he can be erratic and it's part of what makes him great but it just reached the point where it was too uncomfortable for me to watch anymore so I left during "Rebel Rebel". Maybe it's just me, but it feels like watching a car wreck, like what crazy f@cked up thing is he going to do next. And I wouldn't mind a shambolic, erratic show if he were in a good mood and having fun, it just didn't seem like he was last night even though he did start the night wearing a jester's hat.
So I walked out of the Pantages and down the street to O'Donovan's the Irish pub across from First Ave. There's a bit of a crowd in there and then I realized that they're doing karaoke. Karaoke in an Irish pub?? And I thought I was uncomfortable in the Pantages! I got the hell outta there and met my brother and pals out in front of the theater and we ambled down Hennepin and downed a couple of beers in a non-Irish, non-karaoke bar.
Oh, the crowd. There are basically two types of concertgoers and they're inevitably seated next to each other: those who like to stand up and get into the show and those who'd prefer to sit back and watch the performance. Minneapolis crowds tend to be the sit on their hands type and for someone who likes to stand, it's annoying as hell. I've seen Elvis Costello a bunch of times in the last few years and the crowds at his shows will only stand up for the big numbers, "Pump It Up" that sort of thing. The theater that I saw Paul play solo in Madison solved this problem by taking out the first ten rows of seats and making it an open floor.
Anyway, it was a great lost weekend, it was nice meeting Wolfdog and Kathy and seeing trouble again. Now I'm so tired I can hardly see straight and I've got "Making You Go" running through my head. "Now you're making me, now you're making me...

hey all, sunday was...interesting We all toook a vow not to tell those who were not there what they missed. Things started going wild when Paul brought the mike stand down into the pit for I Will Dare and it just went from there. Thanks Michael for inviting me in, it was a fun time, they enevtually started cleaning up the dressing room around us and we finally left, Paul gave my friend the Grandpaboy hat he made and we took it took a bar and toook turns wearing it, like absolute fools. All photgraphic evidence of this will be destroyed. Sill in mpls, wil post all the photos/videos atc when I get home.

" i just feel i need to give some perspective on my comment thats all!!" Hillbilly, what you need to realize is that many of us have previously participated in Replacements show mosh pits!!! Frankly, I appreciated sitting down for Friday nite's show - I could keep my eyes on the stage so I wouldn't miss a thing, and I did not have to endure getting beer spilled on me or stepped on or elbowed or shoved or squished.... And though I was so charged to see that Paul is drawing a new generation of fans (like you), do not think for a moment that we "elderly" fans necessarily appreciate The Mat's stuff more than his solo stuff. But for many of us, those older songs mean everything to us, and to hear them live again is truly a gift - an opportunity that we never know when/if it'll happen again... That is also true of seeing Paul live - I always approach each concert like it's the last time I'll ever see him - 'cuz you just never know!!! So, Hillbilly, give us "old folk" a break !!!

So, Hillbilly, give us "old folk" a break !!! hopefully my comments didnt come across being harsh. that wasnt it at all. basically just an observation. and even though i didnt grow up with them...doesnt mean those songs dont mean the same to me. those songs are trapped in a time...and im currently at the same age y'all were...they mean alot to me too. very much. i just feel us as fans also have to work hard at shows ( i say the same thing to pearl jam fans, which im even more obsessed) its a participation thing, and everyone does it differently i understand. saturday night everyone stood, and there werent any problems. TO ME, its kind of a lack of respect to just stand for the replacements tunes...and i also think paul picks up on it beause he seems to get annoyed when people are yelling out old songs... anyways. i didnt mean to offend! just some observations! give us young folks a break!! anyways christine, it was great to meet you!

Vow!! I don't need no stinkin vows!!!! I need all the details or somebody's gettin hurt!!!! I can take it!! After all I single handedly drank that Meridian Hotel place out of it's Patron!! well it seems i have a different opinion on the show than most...some left because they coudlnt take it anymore...but i thought it was one of the best, purest rock shows ive ever been a part of. or at least right up there with them...paul doesnt go through the motions. tight, loose, energetci, rockin, pissed off, happy, joking, angry. smashed guitars, flubbed lyrics (he does a great job at rhyming new ones though, amazing with words that man is). amazing guitar playing. nevermind was a highlight of the weekend, IOU amazing, high time is always a favorite of mine. what a day for a night is one of the greatest songs ever written...pop bliss. thank you bonnie rait for hating it you stupid...just kidding! amazing. rock n roll...wow..paul tears it up on guitar and can/could play with the best of them. his voice was awesome. the band kicked. what else is there?

Damn, this sounds like an amazing show. Wish I could've been there, even if he threw a nutty and all that stuff. Hey, with PW that's part of the concert experience.
All I know now--I was worried about taking a bus/train to MPLS, now I'll probably have to take one to the West Coast. Ouch... Don't know if I can miss another one of these though....

I woke up this morning with the distinct impression he did a kick-ass version of 'How Can You Like Him?'......did I dream it, or can I get some conformation? My short-term memory is clouded by a weekend of 3 shows, lotsa CD listening driving around town, and many Pabst Blue Ribbons.

yes, he did play a kickass version of "how can you like him." Thank you...I'm so glad that is an actual memory and not the normal made-up crap that constantly runs through my head. I'm still contemplating the 'just wood and wire' thing. I can't go there. As I type this, I am holding my 79 stratocaster (lovingly, of course) that at age 17 I sold my car to buy. It's my security blanket, my substitute for comfort food (when I'm out of Nutty Bars), my stress/boredom reliever, and my great puzzle of life that will call to me until the grave. It's wood, wire, and ME.

Thank you...I'm so glad that is an actual memory and not the normal made-up crap that constantly runs through my head. no problem, it's always a pleasure to agree with the voices in someone else's head. and can i just say, though nobody sang along, i totally loved "Rebel Rebel." he shoulda let me up on the stage to sing because i know that song by heart and i would've wowed the crowd with my white girl booty dance.

hey everybody... i just wanted to say hi from kathy-- before i left the venue, i brought her into paul's dressing room. when i left, they were still talking-- about what, i have no idea I have a guess: they were talking about opening a dormitory for ex-prostitutes, where they could learn about romance and use freshly-cleansed toilets.
