Otto, tell me you're kidding.
"Been a long time since I rock 'n' rolled", indeed. That should have been his opening tune Friday night.

As disappointed as I am for not witnessing night three (zep and bowie covers?), I am happy that I had what can only be described as a perfect weekend - great food, great friends (old and new), great CD shopping, great drinks, great hotel, and, most of all, great music. The best $750 I've ever spent.
Most of all, I'm especially happy that those whose investments in this weekend were even greater - not just in dollars but even in shady housing arrangements (what kind of idiot drops off a young woman at the U of M and expect her to walk to Pentages?). Anybody who travels from San Francisco, Boston, London, and everywhere else that makes my four hour drive look like nothing deserves that extra show more than fat little Hudson.
Now back to reality.

I gotta work later this morning so I'll be brief. I left before the show ended. I don't know any other way to put this, but it seemed like Paul was either drunk or lost it during the encores. I heard that the show ended with a cover of "Rock 'n Roll" that Michael basically willed out of Paul, it just reached the point for me that I couldn't watch anymore. Kudos to Kevin, Jim and Michael for soldiering through.

Night Three, I think Paul lost it earlier, when the (first) solo set didn't really work out that well. The show started strong, fell apart, came back, really fell apart, then came back at the end again. Totally shambolic. Westerberg's patter turned hostile early and stayed that way. He performed two or three songs from the audience level, in front of the stage. He smashed two guitars on their necks, sending shrapnel flying.
Random notes: - Making Me Go, played early, sounded great, Stonesworthy. - Opening with MPLS, Paul had some new lyrics including a "over on the West Bank, they got Little Sun," a namecheck for MPLS harmonica legend Tony "Little Sun" Glover, part of the early 60s band Koerner Ray and Glover, who inspired the Stones. Glover has a little drawing that goes with his signature, kinda like Grandpaboy. - "Lush and Green" must not be a guy song. The Men's was packed by the end of it. - Getting 23 years of lyrics right may be too much to ask.

I'm curious if the Pantages filled out for Sunday night. Seems those tickets were moving slower than the first two nights. Anyone in the balcony report a full house?

Yeah, I was gonna mention that he seemed to have been "in a mood" but....didn't.
I would say the balcony was about 2/3 full.
Anyone know what the blues thing they did that Paul introduced by telling the story of his friend blowing his head off? Man, was that an uncomfortable moment.
Oh, and they also did Swinging Party.

Little observations:
-not long of a wait to find 5th row tickets outside...SCORE! -Hats. I like hats too. Though, I never have tried to put one on by placing it on the ground and doing a head-stand on it. -Paul drunk? dunno bout that...I like 'in a mood', thats about right. He seemed pissed about the monitor system and some other glitches. -1st guitar lost--early 60's Gibson SG special...damn. Not just broke...shattered...splintered. "It's only wood and wire." -Sit/Stand Debate: The theater atmosphere and the relative 'adultness' of the crowd (plus a pinch of MN 'nice' thrown in) might be what keeps em in the seats...I could only take so much, Little Mascara starts, I leap to my feet and do my stupid white boy dance in the side aisle. -I Will Dare/IOU: Paul's answer to the Sit/Stand debate. Sets up his mic on the floor and starts the rush for the front. Coolest part of the show. -Requests: Gary's Got A Boner and Customer? Glad Paul showed a sense of humor about those...as they were probably intended?!?!? -2nd guitar lost- A shiny, newer Les Paul, or Les Paul style guitar...Honkytonk Angels...had trouble with the guitar sound....THWACK! back to the ES-330 -Encore: Seemed he didn't have anything left he wanted to play...just started playing riffs..and 'Rebel, Rebel'...tried to get Kevin or Jim to sing...then sang a bit through a drum mic..gave up the song on the chord change. -ROCKNROLL!!!...yeah, yeah, yeah...Its Zeppelin...but it was loud, fast, and relatively tight. Paul was SCREAMING. I loved it.
I loved the energy this band brought to the songs..and getting the chance to see Paul play guitar in that setting...he is truly great and unique player.
I had a great weekend...wish it came around more than every few (or more) years. It was great meeting some of y'all...Gimme, Jodi, Trouble, Scooter, A Reg, Kathy...others I didn't catch names...good times.
PS- My boss bought my story about some unspecific car trouble...I did not get fired, being 4 hours late for work and all...and with a handful of beer bottle tops in my pocket. I might be gettin older...but I'm still stupid.

Sounds like a smashing show!! lol (sorry it's 7am)
That is what is so essential about concert going. If you like a band you MUST see them multiple nights. You get the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Glad everyone had fun. See you all on the west coast!! (I hope)

Didn't he get pissy by the end of the three-night Guthrie stand he did in MPLS a couple of years ago? Maybe the guy is telling the truth, he likes the one-off and just has no patience for repetition

i think paul gets pissed at people requesting songs at him all night. is ay people shut upSTAND UP and listen and enjoy the show. its a total "here we are now entertain us" atmoshpere. now i may offend some people...
im 23 years old. these were the first 3 times i have ever seen westerberg. and it kind of made me sick to my stomach to see people ONLY stand up for replacements songs. no wonder paul doesnt like touring or playing, it turns into a nostalgic act. when his solo stuff is just as good IF NOT BETTER than replacements. especailly now. yea it was amazing to hear little mascara, left of the dial etc...but holy shit....making me go....high time....what a day for a night...killer killer killer...
amazing shows. saturday might have been my favorite, set was more varied than the other two nights...knockin on mine...first glimmer etc....
but last night was magical. it was ROCK N FUCKING ROLL. paul was probably pissy, but...you get what paul is..hes not up there going through the motions. isnt that what we excpect??
i think he got pissed when they were doing that blues song ...(sorry i dont know the name, but it was ...amazing) i think he was having guitar troubles, alot of feedback, perhaps monitor...and perhaps just got pissed..BOOM smashed the shit out of that sg...wow, i would have taken it!!! then someone yelled for a song and it got paul pissed..no question. and he said, not verbatim but..."you know, when i was 17, my best friend told me this was his favorite song, then he went home, wrapped his lips around a 12 gauage and blew his brains out all over his parents walls" ....awkward moment...then he picked upa nother guitar and tried it again...went much better, killer solos from both....
BOOOOOM smashed another guitar....wow. this was a great show. a total party up on stage, after that blues song paul went behind the curtain and was playing rebel rebel...noone knew what was going on in the band, so they were both nervos to sing..finally paul came back out, tried to sing through a drum mic..came to the front..and realized noone knew it. anyways, clsoed off with rock n roll and it was fucking sweet. paul can really play that guitar. it was great.
great show. here omes a regular, pure...
great three nights. wow.
