indeed, thanks for the post of the podcast...
well, hearing Mehr talk about Paul being retired and pursuing other interests , like painting, kind of confirms what we've felt or thought. So it's over...but I'm still hoping that he gets the itch at some point and decides to go out with a bang in one last hurrah. But if they've got more stuff to release and compile, and Warner Bros is staying out of their way, I guess there will be enough income stream for him to live on in the coming years. But yet, I went back and listened to "Message to the Boys" and I thought, man, even though he had that song in his back pocket for awhile, that he and Tommy could record it and make it sound fresh? they still got it, they could give us some new material.
It was also great to hear that despite the health issues, Slim is doing well and has great support from his family and friends. So hopefully, the income stream from whatever stuff they release will also help Slim out financially
What's also interesting is Mehr talking about the Spotify discovery of the Mats. That surprises me because I've always wondered if they would get discovered by a younger generation and maybe get a renaissance. I don't really listen to college radio or any indie radio stuff anymore but a friend of mine listens to KALX a lot , the Berkeley campus radio station, and he only hears the Mats once in awhile and it's definitely older material if the dj is following a theme in a block of songs, not like the newer releases from Maxwell or Dead Man's Pop stuff. I figured the Spotify royalty rate is so shitty, they won't make much money from streaming, but if Mehr is right about a new generation discovering them, who knows?

Looks like Rhino is up to their weird shipping nonsense still. .. that's crazy; they've had all this time to work out distribution stuff. I wonder if they're short on employees? I've been lucky not to have ordered directly from them.

you know, I made a remark in another thread about the re-issued or remastered stuff as feeling kind of like a money grab by Paul and Tommy. It may have come across as a bit harsh; I mean, I don't hold it against them for trying to earn some more royalty checks, to help pay off some debt still owed to Warners, I just would like to support them too by buying new Mats stuff, not 35+ year old songs I've already purchased. It's kind of a shame that the post reunion sessions didn't yield a new Mats CD.
BUT! I had forgotten that there was also the recurring medical costs for Slim. So if any of the proceeds can go to help Slim out, if Slim and his family can get some royalty checks too and some financial relief, I'm good with that. And it's still heartbreaking knowing that Slim is debilitated by that stroke and that it robbed him of playing and singing again. I wish him and his family well.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but more rock stars should knock it on the head at 50 (which is basically what Paul did, no?) well, there's something to be said for not becoming an oldies act. I remember Grace Slick advocating for rockers to quit at a certain age, but I thought "why not continue, who says you gotta stop rockin'?" And then every now and then, you see some aging bands just kind of get into the oldies routine and not growing old gracefully. If an artist is still producing new material that holds up well, I'm okay with seeing them continuing to get onstage...but seeing like The Who now? Daltry straining to belt out some songs like he used to? I loved The Who but I just can't see myself going to see them now unless someone had an extra ticket maybe.

Time flies tomorrow, indeed..."and tomorrow will make a day since we met" (I know a lot of fans hated that song and didn't care for "Eventually", but I dug it).
You know, I think his playing days are done---like a Paul Simon or an Elton John retiring from touring and playing. But as far as any more music? Never say never. I'm still gonna hold out hope that there is one last goodbye coming from Paul. I just can't see him going out like this, giving us more than just a few, few minutes of silence.
He may be comfortable with retirement and whatever royalty checks he's getting for now and feel no need to do a solo CD or digital download release. Hell, I'm no longer working and put my papers in a few years ago when covid was raging away. Former co-workers tell me they can get me back on contract, but I just don't have the motivation anymore to deal with commuting into the city and all that crap again.
And I may be in the minority here or an outlier, but I kind of think the re-mixes and releases of old material are kind of a money grab for them. And that's fine, I'll support the band. Still, I can't help but think I'm going to buy, again, songs that are like 35+ years old. Granted, a clearer and fresher sounding "Tim" is welcomed, but I'd really love for the guy to get back with Tommy and crank out something new and fresh. Ah well, it's just a dream...maybe one that's just too tired to come true. 😕

At this point, I don't expect him to tour anymore and I'm okay with that. It'll be sad not to see him perform anymore, but such is life. And the guy has paid his dues being in the trenches and on the road a lot.
but there's nothing preventing him from still being involved in music other than his own mindset or motivation. Whether it's him producing some other artists he finds worthy of supporting, writing songs for film or other artists, he could still have a music career, if he wants it, since his performing days are done.
As for his home ownership, good for him---I certainly do hope that someone is advising him on his finances. Holding onto an asset like his original house is good with the equity he's built up in it. Even better if he's renting it out as part of an income stream as he heads towards his mid 60's, Medicare eligible and social security! I mean, nobody wants to see the guy eating cans of dog food off of a hot plate as he gets older.
Ok,that was a gross exaggeration, but you get the point.

I've said this before in previous threads but it'd be a shame if he didn't go out with a bang. I mean, I get why he'd go for retirement. Perhaps at some point he hit a wall and feels he's really got nothing left to say for an audience, It wouldn't be the first time an artist just kind of slowly fade out. So, he's just writing and recording for himself, an ingrained hobby/compulsion of his and living off royalty checks for the time being.
But then again....you never know. He could drop like a triple CD of solo stuff on us as his last hurrah and final farewell. Or not.

Cool that Chris is creating and putting stuff out there. Hopefully, Paul gets inspired to release something soon, this is a pretty long disappearing act on Paul's part. Even Tommy's got stuff out now.
anyway, happy 33rd of July everyone...

ha, I'm guessing he didn't like Bob's Gibson Firebird either cuz of its funky body design.

Those in the DC area will know of the legendary 9:30 Club and its origins. Hometown boy Dave Grohl helped out with the opening ceremonies of the Atlantis, a replica of the original 9:30 Club in DC. Foo Fighters were the inaugural band to open up the venue. I remember my first time being there as a suburban high school kid venturing into sketchy and menacing part of DC to see some hardcore bands---Agent Orange, the Brains (I think? def not Bad Brains,) Black Market Baby. Never did see Fugazi for some reason. My older cousin was in the lottery to get tickets for the opening but was shut out, the demand for tickets was overwhelming. And Josh Freese gets a mention in the Washington Post's article: www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/05/31/foo-fighters-atlantis/

Funny that he's grouchy about it but I didn't see it as him as not caring about the guitars he uses or has. I saw it as him being prickly, for whatever reason, over talking about gear. I guess he doesn't like gear talk!
But he knows his stuff; like when talking about how he likes the cleaner P90 pick ups because he wants the amps to do all the work. Sounds like he was dangerously getting close to gear talk, ha ha...(of course, he was hawking the First Act model and getting paid to endorse it).

Hmm, the link to the Washington Post article is broken, but I had scanned the article into jpegs. I referenced it in the "Westerberg's Junk" thread:

I wonder if there are any pics of Paul's collection? It is hard to find information about Paul's Guitars. He doesn't like to talk about that stuff. I read interviews where he is asked him about his guitars and he said something like "I have a big red one". Here is the quote: His wiry shadow rarely darkens a club doorway these days, but then again, the guy who dresses up as Mickey Mouse probably doesn't spend his days off at Disneyland. "When the Mats first started I used to go out a ton, but after years of touring it gets to you. I come home and I want the opposite: quiet, peace. I'm not like those guys who need to get onstage after a month to affirm their being," he says. The man doesn't even like to talk about guitars. "It's a hunk of wood with wires -- what could be more boring? It's like, I got a big red loud one, all right?"(source: www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/style/1993/06/13/a-replacement-finds-his-own-place/23e1146d-e4ac-4c78-895e-f638064dee3e/)

yeah, heard the news. Josh is going to get a good pay day, so good for him. Foo Fighters like to tour a lot, don't they? He'll be earning his paycheck then! But Josh has always seemed to be a very capable session or touring drummer, he'll do fine.
I've always wondered if he would want to be a full fledged member of a band, not just "for hire" kind of guy for a tour or an album or two. And yeah, as much as he loves the Replacements, they ain't doing anything but re-issues, so Josh may as well keep busy and not wait for the call that probably isn't coming.
I really wish Paul could've made it work with Tommy in producing some new album following the re-union shows. The re-mixed/newly mastered re-issues are fine, but I can't help but feel it's a bit of an oldies act (or worse, a bit of a money grab, if I'm being cynical). I mean, we're going back to songs done 35-40 years ago, great as they are.

yeah, interesting how he changed the lyrics for the final version. Just saying it myself, "I wish once was me" doesn't seem to roll off the tongue so easily? maybe he also went with "pretty sure..." because it's more concise? I dunno---but I never knew of this version. Or if it someone posted this before, I forgot about it.
Also, what does the baby crying mean? How are others interpreting it? Does it mean that the narrator was basically used because the woman wanted a partner just to have a baby? the baby is the only thing to make her happy and she's kicked the narrator to the curb already?
I do recall reading somewhere---maybe here?---that the baby crying is actually Johnny. I dunno how true that is, but then again, given that PW disappeared for awhile when Johnny was born, where else was he going to get a soundclip of a crying baby while he was recording stuff in the basement?

I remember seeing that posted here...and Kathy deleted it too. She said don't post stuff about Paul's personal life here or engage in rumors, etc, because we don't know who else is reading the site. Like Laurie!
Kathy was quick to delete stuff but I never minded because she was probably told by Paul's management (like Darren) NOT to post that stuff. Besides, I'm not really interested in his personal life if it has no bearing on his work and creativity, the output. If Paul wants to share his life in interviews, fine, but I wanna know more about if he's going to release some new stuff!

that's pretty funny, as soon as she get fed up with him, Paul drops her like a rock.
And who knows? Either her memory is faulty or maybe he has other kids we don't know about, ha!
Like that one joke answer to the question, "So, you have children? You got any kids?"
"None that I know of!"

Thanks, I had forgotten about it, but I find it funny he's going after the Mats vote! Still dunno how the hell I got on some political campaign email list from Amy Klobuchar. I've never been a resident of Minnesota, have no ties to the state.
If Tim wanted some fundraising stuff, why didn't his staff just contact me directly? I live in the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia) area. Weird, I don't get how they got my email address to begin with or who would've sold it to some campaign.
