That's awesome...Great long-time friend of mine, who I only see and/or talk to a couple of times a year, messaged me on Facebook today: "Dude! Got vinyl copies of Slim Dunlap's first two solo albums at Record Store Day! Don't know if you've heard these, but you need to get these, now, whatever it takes! Spectacular!" I've been trying to find a place to order the Slim vinyls online... I've been looking around and found it on ebay for no markup ($24.99 plus $4 shipping) so although it may be a record store selling left over stock, it is no flipper (my local record shop but they didn't seem to have it in stock). www.ebay.com/itm/Slim-Dunlap-My-New-Old-Records-Replacements-2LP-Vinyl-RSD-Record-Store-Day-/381234161419?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58c353a70b

Love Paul dearly. Have seen the Mats and Paul/Tommy solo multiple times over the past 30 years. So please don't question my fandom when I say that I could happily go the rest of my life without ever listening to SG again. I just despite that album to its core. I remember when SG first came out . . . I found it so depressing. Not the material, but the fact that it appeared Paul had either hit the songwriter's wall and lost it and/or had simply given up trying to be compelling. That's part of the reason Stereo/Mono was such a revelation. In addition to featuring some of the best writing of his career, I couldn't believe he could still sound so vital and relevant after the mess that was SG. I understand your position and agree to an extent - I think it's his low point as a songwriter. I find a some of the lyrics cringe-worthy and most of it feels pretty lazy, uninspired and self-indulgent to me. I feel like he was going for a deep, introspective, quiet but intense record, and I think he just tried too hard and missed the mark. Oddly, it also has what are probably my 2 favorite post-Tim songs of his - Wonderful Lie and Lookin' Out Forever. There's a couple other keepers on there, but it would have made a much better EP, imo. I also like the production. I think it's a better sounding record than the rest of his solo catalog. Plenty of opposing viewpoints on here, and I respect that some people really connect to this record. I ordered the vinyl and look forward to hearing it again, but I have my own 'Best of the Early Solo Records' comp with the tracks I like, and listen to SG no more than once every few years. I definitely agree with some of these sentiments. Usually when I get a new vinyl I spin it right away...I've delayed checking out how the vinyl sounds because we had a bout (finally) of Spring-ish weather and I wanted to keep up the feeling. Suicane has it's time and place, definitely a certain mood record, but I think "Fugitive Kind" is a top song for me.

Got the album in the mail today. Haven't listened yet but pretty disappointed in the packaging...it looks like they scanned a CD copy and just blew it up for the vinyl as it's pretty pixelated. Not much in the way of liner notes either, which is a shame since for 14 Songs they used the deluxe version for the packaging, and Suicane also had a pretty cool deluxe CD.

It will be released on vinyl though... Found that out after I posted. I'm happy I'll finally have the TT shit on vinyl since I refuse to pay $75+ for questionable used vinyl. I have the Tim & PTMM Rhino reissues & I'm not all that impressed with them, but I'll keep my fingers crossed these ones are better! Yeah I have two copies of the PTMM re-issue...both skip in the same place. I don't think they even listened to the test pressing.

I second "Nevermind." A lot of the Sorry Ma tracks are pretty interchangeable with me so I'd love them to shake things up with maybe "Customer," "Rattlesnake," or "Raised in the City."

Oo! Someone else that wants Go as well.. very cool. Go ( please, in Philly guys hehe) Nobody Here Comes a Regular They're Blind Johnny's Gonna Die Heyday I'm always somewhat bemused (I don't even know really know what that word means - my impression is that it is something of a combination of being "amused" and "confused") at the mention of "Nobody"...Don't get me wrong; I like that song...But I always thought it was kinda second-tier on that album...But I have to say, over the years, I have found if there is one song off of ASD that the hardest core Mats/Westerberg fans reference, it's friggin' "Nobody"...I defer to your superior insight and knowledge, sirs...And wouldn't mind hearing it...As far as "Heyday" (and that's how it's properly spelled, right? Not "Hayday"? I've been struggling with that since 1983)...That is not only one of the best Mats songs, or one of the best punk rock songs, but just one of the best "songs", ever, period..."Going to the party where we weren't invited"..."Times ain't tough, just tedious"...Jesus...That's some wordsmithing, there...Great slabs of major chord distorted pop, too...That chorus is pretty much just A/E, right?...What else do you need? I always liked "Nobody" as part of PW's "jilted marriage" trilogy, along with "You're Getting Married" and the first three minutes-- song--on "49:00"

Got the DC presale somehow...I made an account and stored my billing info the night before to expedite the process. I've seen them at two festival dates so I'm thrilled to see them under a roof!

This is great! I hope they keep moving right up through his solo discog. Eventually didn't offer anything packaging-wise but 14 Songs was quite pretty.

Stopping a James Franco movie and now releasing a Replacements track? That's it, I'm defecting to NK.

I got the exact pic from Tommy at a solo show when he was playing guitar (I've used the same ever since, love the weight). I do remember at the Midway show Tommy had the bright green Dunlap's on his mic stand, which I think are thicker and make more sense when using a pick playing bass. You can see here: photos.twincities.com/2014/09/13/the-replacements/#30

I read the article yesterday as I was browsing through the local book store. One line threw me a bit: Tommy lives in Hudson, NY "with his daughter." Like most people here, I don't like to pry too much into the personal affairs of the band members, but what about his wife? Am I reading too much into that one line? I heard they were a match made in hell...

I remember seeing some pretty poor sales figures for the remastered reissues in particular. Not sure how some of the recent vinyl did, like record store day, but I always felt that if half the people who actually namedrop the Replacements supported them financially, they'd be a lot better off. Tried to do some research on this site and found:
"In April, Rhino reissued the Replacements' first three albums and an EP for hometown Minneapolis label Twin Tone. They've since sold 22,000 copies combined in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan."
"Songs for Slim debuted at #108 on the Billboard Charts! 108 THE REPLACEMENTS SONGS FOR SLIM 3,930 Last week it sold another 1150 so it's up to just over 5000 sold."
Maybe I'm reaching for a correlation here and we can all argue that the record industry is dead, but they just sold out a 14,000 cap stadium and roughly 1/3rd that number bought the latest, Songs For Slim, arguably a charity album, in the first two weeks?

I had a great spot with Davpel1 about two heads back from the partition. I was with my wife who is 5'5 and I care more about her vantage point, especially if she (we) dare I say *earned* it by waiting and holding our bladders tight for hours upon hours that day (and not, say, because we were drunk and, ya know, man, had seen the Mats in a club on the Let It Be tour, man, bro) but that's General Admission. Nothing too out of hand, a real sense of comradeship from the people alongside us...I do think either being at a rock show or having too many beers is a poor excuse to be a straight up pushy asshole, shame it's to be expected. Nothing against drinking at all--just assholes or people who, uninhibited, become them.
Interestingly enough, one clearly inebriated fellow did make it to the front and wedged himself between me and the guy in front of me because apparently my pelvis wasn't attached to the forward man's buttocks. He then bailed because the area was too crowded for him. Not sure what he was expecting at a sold out show at the front of the pit...
Great show! Love all the pictures and recaps. Really hoping for a DVD/live album release.

On that note, I'm coming in the for the show and staying in a hotel downtown. I've rented an SUV, so if anyone wants a ride from downtown to the show and back, I should have plenty of room and would love the company. David Downtown St. Paul or MPLS?
