I want to know if the LP has "Portland" etched in the inner vinyl. It has a "We're still sorry" on side one. And Portland on side two. Brilliant! Such a cool little detail.

...I just listened to "They're Blind" back to back from both records. The difference in these two versions is stark. I found myself toggling back to the DTAS version trying to find the beautiful subtleties that are prominent on the Dead Man version. Where are they? Buried? Removed? And the guitar solo?!? Completely different. It had me wondering when the solo for the DTAS version was cut. To my amateur ears, I don't think it's a mixing thing. I think two completely different sessions. Slim, I assume? The playing on the DM'sP version is beautiful. .... I'd love to read others' impressions of one song compared/contrasted between the two releases...especially those of you who are incredibly articulate and knowledgeable about the more technical aspects of recording and songwriting. Seems that there is a mostly universal opinion that They're Blind benefited the most from the Wallace treatment. I can't argue. For me, I always thought it was one of the stronger songs on the record, but lumped in with the rest as far as the production sucking the feeling out of it. It sorta went from an 80s alternative ballad on the original to an almost 50s waltzy Americana thing now. There's so much more feeling and depth. The vocal is way more powerful. It's really great.
I loved the original guitar solo. I always thought it was one of Slim's best. The Wallace version is better, more creative, more interesting. There are parts in these mixes that are from different takes than the 89 mix, but that is maybe the most glaring. He probably compared alternate takes and used them when he thought it was an improvement, but sparingly, so it's still basically the same record. I doesn't sound like the same rig, so you you might be right that it was a different session, or maybe they did a few this way, decided it needed something different so changed the rig and cut a few more during the same session.
This is touched on in the included booklet/recollections from Bob Mehr. Apparently the studio mandated the change in solo and a new vocal cut. It's interesting because the intention was to sort of set the song up to have that contrast between the waltz and the bluesy solo interjection.

Speaking of Matt Wallace...anyone else ever see his reply to the Allmusic.com review of 14 Songs and his producing? I just saw it now. After reading their review of Dead Man's Pop, I clicked over to read reviews of some Paul solo stuff and read it. Thought at first it must have beena pissed off fan, but seems like it was him. Funny/cool stuff. Wish more artist's would reply. I know they can't respond to every review, but one's like Allmusic where the review is seen by so many for so long. Don't know how they resist. Also this is some of Mats' most inspired drumming. Some really cool choices on "They're Blind" (which Wallace played) and "I Won't." And "Last Thing in the World" sounds unlike any other Replacement song drum-wise...the verses almost sound like a double-kick number.

"They're Blind" is my new highlight track on the album. The way the piano walks you up into that amazing solo and then the guitars linger through the end of the song...and the grit and feedback that brings out the choruses...it adds a new gravitas to the idea behind the lyrics and the Mats being a band that is overlooked. Sort of like a new bookend to their career with this reawakening.
Personally I love the new tracklist. I prefer "Rock N Ghost" more as the closing, it was sort of a slog on the old version half way through...gives a new poignancy, with obvious call backs to "Here Comes A Regular."
I'm amazed that this might be my favorite produced Replacement records. The cool but subtle instrumentation on songs like "We'll Inherit the Earth" and "Back to Back" really make them pop and keep me listening for new discoveries. Love the horns and xylophone. And the rockers in "I Won't" and "Anywhere is Better than Here" are way less cheesy...feel more in line with "Lay it Down Clown" or don't make me miss them not being swapped out for the superior "Wake Up" or "Til We're Nude."

I love "Last Thing in the World" and hearing it against the Bearsville "I'll Be You" to think what a fully imagined version could be.
But I wish I could unhear "If it's just a pause then I'll toot like Santa Claus"

Yes! Every song is better, some more drastic improvements than others. I really liked the drumming on "I Won't" with the stops -- really took me by surprise. I think "They're Blind" might be the most improved with the amazing guitar work and some grit and feedback. Definitely breathed some new life and gave some new surprises to the album. "Darlin' One" pops and and the new sequencing also changes how the songs are perceived.
I feel like I'm in the room with the guys rolling through these numbers.
And then we get really drunk and Tom Waits eventually shows up.
My preorder was shipped today (the label was created, no movement) so I didn't get the email for the digital download some of you got -- maybe because my shipping wasn't as delayed?

This song (and this live version) has always helped to lift my mood. Maybe not specifically thematically, although it's a beautiful song that turns from love to melancholy, but that groove always makes me so happy. I don't think Paul's done anything like it since.

Just went and saw the remake of Stephen King's 'It' which is set in 1989 this time. About 45 minutes into the movie, the character of Beverly Marsh goes into her bedroom and on the wall is a gig poster for The Replacements, at the bottom the opener is listed as Fresh Young Fellows. P.S. THEY ALL FLOAT Also noticed this! The poster looked like this, although IT is set in Maine:
