I find D-minor to be the saddest key. i don't know why.... it makes people weep instantly...

in some ways, all of those are true. well, except for the "... stinks" & "bacon" ones. those are patently untrue.

When I was in high school I remember flipping channels on a Saturday, and American Bandstand was playing "I'll Be You" on some spring break version of the show. It must have been right when the song had been released as a single. All these people in bathing suits were trying to dance, and they looked very awkward and confused. Nobody sang along. oh man. that is awesome....

There was a brief moment where I said to myself "Maybe I can get some deep lyrical though over Mr. Rabbit". And here we are! english, pete! english.

For example if Springsteen put a song like Mr. Rabbit in Nebraska well then wouldn't that piss you off? I'd flip. Sometimes records happen and a collection of amazing songs occure. Why put mediocer songs in? Doing this takes away of what can be a masterpiece. maybe you like the tune, but "nebraska" has the song open all night which is incongruous (in feel & lyrics somewhat) from the rest of the album. and i love "nebraska". in fact, way back on the crazy ass monolyth board i made a comparison of "sterEo" & "nebraska".

nice post, Pete. Granted, you're not the world's best speller but you are a good writer i hereby call for a moratorium on the usage of emoticons! (i much preferred kathy's response without the smiley) ;D

sorry, but pete needs more than a replacements disc to set him on the path of righteousness.
i recommend he get the first "nuggets" boxset & just go from there.

Buddy we just may be the only one's who love DTAS here. don't mistake people who disagree with your assessment of the early mats material with an elitist hatred of their stab at the mainstream. i happen to, with only an exception or two, love dtas.

IT's rock and roll and not always poetry. sometimes it isn't even pretty! and that's the point.

i remember in college saying to my friend that asd had "no pulse" as compared to the older 'mats records.
that was really the mistake being made; trying to compare it to let it be or ptmm.
upon further reflection, i learned to just love the album. to this day, i listen to it weekly. even more than let it be, surprisingly.

*sniff* You just keep pushing me away. How can we make this work if you don't agree with everything I say? I have Wildwood and Stanley Road. I like one or two songs on each. Heavy Soul did nothing for me. I'm sure we can agree on the Jam though? Darling? oh, of course we can agree on the jam! silly! we will always have the jam. *busts out case of champagne* (man, i LOVE wildwood, too, but heavy soul is just great to me)

Indeed! As if the dull, sadsack old Mod that Weller has become is even capable of comprehending something like Grandpaboy. He'd rather spend his days noodling with Ocean Colour Scene followed by a wank session with Noel Gallagher. now, now... i like a lot weller's solo stuff. heavy soul is a goddamn classic.

i think, although it has been used obviously, "dead man shake" would be a great name for a gramps comp.

cellarfullofnoise, I can't see the second photo, what album cover is it? I'm wracking my brain trying to think of an album from '96 that had a similar cover but I'm blanking out. i'm thinking wilco's "being here" or "being there" or whatever the hell it is called.

I agree about that cover. I was working at a record store when it came out and received an advance promo copy from the label. It had a brown cardboard sleeve with a close-up pic of Paul's fingers on his guitar strings. A much better cover imho, and I'm glad that's the one I have instead of the official cover, which isn't the most flattering. angela, i think i love you. that "promo" cover is MUCH better. i have seen it, but i own the ugly cover.

i pretty much love every paul album cover to cover, with the exception of dead man shake & folker. and even those two are great.
eventually is great. reminds me of asd. "you've had it with you" is eventually's "bent outta shape". about the only thing i don't like about eventually is the cover. which i detest. it has actually given me nightmares.
