What happens now? Maybe a DVD release of reunion performances for Christmas? I'm thinking a new studio release might be expecting too much...As would an actual Replacements tour of smaller venues...But, boy, even with all the logistical crap that would have to come along with that, with maybe smaller paychecks, I can't imagine they wouldn't enjoy playing something like a dozen shows before audiences that were specifically there just to see them...I'm o.k. with where we are now...I can't believe I got to see them one more time...But I'm a little depressed at the prospect of going back to five years of no news, where Tommy occasionally plays in Brazil with G n'R, and Paul puts out one or two download-only basement cuts... ummmmmmm, wasn't this the theme of threads and posts that you were doc-martining me on a little over six months ago? or should i feel privileged to know that i was ahead of the curve. jesus. ... you're depressed. well, drop everything then.

Did I geek out and overrate "S/M"? I'm sorry, I will concede any point detractors had about this ("it's just him in his basement/he sucks on drums/he uses the same riffs on more than one song/some of this shit cuts out before it's over)...But, not only do I think these are perhaps the best songs he's ever written (certainly post-Mats), but sometimes (when I'm really, really cranky - and a little fucked up) I declare this is among the greatest Top Ten Albums of All Time...I remember playing about three cuts off this for my ex-wife when this first came out...She had no reaction...Then wrinkled her nose...Then pronounced: "He's lost it"...Wow...That's when I realized: "Maybe I'm better off without her"... It is simply not possible to overrate S/M. It (they must be viewed as one record) is an absolute masterpiece. Easily the best thing Paul has done since the Mats and there are many days when I'm convinced those two records beat even Let It Be and Tim. The writing is so unbelievably consistent and the performances are stellar.

I don't want to play right now, wiser...I told you; I'm depressed...And not to damage your self-esteem or anything, but I have no idea of what I may or may not have said about you six months ago...

What next?? I say finish the Buddy Holly, Richie Valens. Big Bopper tour...that was tragically cut short. Paul alluded to this in an interview years ago....

I want to hear this band as a four piece captured on record. Having Josh & Dave augmenting him & Tommy hopefully will be exactly the motivation Paul needs to get in the studio and rock like murder.....

thanks for that link....that's awesome they're thinking of doing more concerts. I mean, what else do they have going? Johnny is a teenager, Paul is divorced, he's free to start recording with the guys and then do some gigging!

well, this thread has certainly taken a twist, though my self-esteem remains intact while sipping whiskey, and proceeding with my cynical self, wondering what, in fact, i've waded into. i'm quite confident the 'Mats will continue on, and we're very much likely to see an actual formal tour in the upcoming months, or so i've been told. hope anarkissed rediscovers his center, because balance, and i'm not kidding, is the key to staying afloat.

What kind of whisky? My confidence and self esteem has been shredded by this soul evaporating bureaucracy I work in. Maybe the restorative powers of whisky will help me get through the grind of being an office drone and data entry monkey. Will it help me become centered and balanced and relieve the repressed anger I have? Should I take my whisky home? www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlYO-lVrSCg(just kidding....the boss is out today and I'm bored at work, actually)

The quote from Darren: He's got a iffy track record, but he *is* the damn manager.

Wow! That's it! That is the crux of why we don't seem to get along, although, frankly, kinda seems like we should: both love the Mats, both like to pontificate, and both probably have a higher opinion of ourselves than is actually warranted in real life...You drink that brown liquor, and I like mine to be clear (vodka, rum, gin)...Though I guess there is dark rum...I've been thinking about working some Crown Royal into the mix...I used to drink that just after high school, when the drinking age here was still only 18...Eh, who am I kidding? Just put "80 Proof" in a pill, and give me a prescription, and it'll avoid a whole lotta unnecessary folderol...Or just go ahead and legalize marijuana, and suddenly, alcohol retailers in my state will be saying: "What the fuck happened? Our sales dropped 25% last month!" [Don't tell anybody, but that weekend I went to see the Replacements at ACL, I snorted a lil' smack]...Yeah, go ahead and keep that shit illegal, because, otherwise, I see a really bad, bad (although occasionally, ecstatic) road ahead...Yeah, I'm too old for that shit...

I really like this remixed mashup of the song. I know we're off topic but so what.

Pretty cool...There's a lil' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in there at the end...Since we're off topic, I've always felt a lot of "what if" about this band...So, they were sick of each other, and tired of playing 30 minute shows with crappy little amplifiers and a shitty P.A. in front of 50,000 screaming 14-year-old girls...Yeah, I get it...But they completely missed the revolution in live sound technology that was literally just a few years around the corner...In one of part of this pretty good Led Zeppelin biography ("Hammer of the Gods") I read, George Harrison turned up and hung out with them for a few shows...He asked: "Who's opening?" Some Zeppeliner said: "Nobody...We don't fuck around with opening acts..." He asked: "How long do you play for?" "Eh, at least two hours, three or more if we feel like it..." Harrison: "Fuck me! We used to play 30 minutes, and could get off in 20 if we weren't in the mood!" He was astounded at the quality of sound out in the audience, and even more astounded that the band onstage could pretty much hear themselves that good as well...The Beatles should have taken two years off, everybody did a friggin' solo album, then got back together for one final album and a real tour...Yeah, I blame Yoko...

ha, well, apologies for hijacking the thread, but there's no news coming from Mats HQs other than what daffodil reported in that link.
That's a pretty creative mash up....I've always liked that Indian influenced melody and the drumming on Tomorrow Never Knows (I've always felt that Ringo was under rated as a drummer).
Interesting, I didn't know that Harrison had that reaction to the Led Zepp concert and the possibilities that could've been had the modern PA systems and monitors been available to the Beatles.
Speaking of the Beatles, I think in one of the PTMM promo interviews, Paul talks about songwriting and how the easiest thing was for people to just play chords and have the melody over the top. he referenced how the Beatles had chords that went along with the melody line and that was what he was trying to do as well. No doubt, the Beatles tunes are complicated---it's not just simple 3 chord rock.
