It's 4 months until Coachella and I don't want to have 4 months of arguing going on here, so I'm hoping we can agree on the following:
It is ENTIRELY reasonable for people to find the idea of going to Coachella unappealing and not a viable option for them to attend. It is ENTIRELY reasonable for people who feel this way to be disappointed that this is the ONLY option currently available to see the band.
This doesn't make them a bad fan. It doesn't mean they don't want the band to have a big pay day. It doesn't mean they don't want the band to get the acclaim/success/new fans/etc they deserve.
What it means is they are disappointed there is not an easier, cheaper, less hot and dusty way to see the band. The end.
Please refrain from lecturing people who express any of the above opinions as to why they should feel differently. You also don't need to educate them about why Coachella is awesome if they don't share your opinion.
It is absolutely fine if you are excited and happy and thrilled to see the band in this setting. God speed to you and the rest of us look forward to hearing your reports and are (semi) genuinely happy for those who are going to see this show.
But it is not fine for you to lecture other people about why they should feel they same way as you do or to rag on them for "complaining".
tl;dr = You do you.

I went to Coachella last year. While I had a great time, it is definitely not a festival to go to just to see one band. The set times are pretty short for non-headliners, usually around 45 minutes. Since they only sell weekend tickets and the location is pretty far out of the way from major cities, it's the sort of deal where you have to go on Thurs or Fri and spend the whole weekend there.
But yeah, it's be a great time if you like a lot of the artists on the line-up, and are fine with festivals and camping. Personally I'm glad I went to RiotFest to see the Mats, as I wasn't planning on going to Coachella this year.

I am in California and as much as I want to go I don't know yet... Although my son will more than likely be there again and all his friends will be like "dude how do you know all these songs?" I am so proud!!!!!

I'm bummed they are playing Coachella, but i'm absolutely going to go and i'm going to go ballistic. I can't blame them for getting paid. Sure, the venue isn't ideal but i have a feeling as soon as that first note hits, I'm not going to give a rip where i am.

I live in L.A. and I don't think I am going. I want to see them sooooo much!! I just can't justify the cost, or the hassle. Hopefully they will play some place small another time. I am a bit disappointed, but it is what it is...

Well disappointed for today cuz I'm not going to spend that money on that venue. But this is still going in the right direction I think..They liked it enough at RIOTFEST to play again together..thats GREAT! Still think a club tour supporting new music of sorts will happen..I mean why would all those guitars be going to Stinsons? To rehearse for 2 shows in CA? Doubt it. From P & T's perspective I think the coachella thing makes sense. They are like "we show up and play 45 minutes and make xxxxxxxx amount of money? We didn't make that much in our entire van riding crap career!" Also this is a great venue to kickstart the buzz and promo of perhaps a future smaller tour. Why spend the marketing $ themselves when the coachellas can and will do it for you?

I honestly think they deserve all of the money they can possibly make. I really do. I don't think they made anything when they were together. I would still extend the invitation for them to play in my backyard though...

Well, they're playing same day as Neko, which is cool, but reading the lineup makes me realize how "out of the loop" musically I am. Like who are "The Knife", "Chromeo Haim" "Zedd"? But good fun for the kids who are going. Be sure to stay hydrated and don't take the brown molly.

I live in Oregon, but Coac-hell-a (emphasis on the hell) just doesn't make sense for me at this point in my life (mid-50s). I'd rather hold out and hope for a better venue and a headlining status. I'm cool traveling to see them, so maybe in that week between the 11th and 18th they'll play some gigs up and down the west coast for beer money and to stay sharp.

I also live in southern CA and am not tempted at all to go. $400 for a weekend in the desert & perhaps a 45min set from them? No thanks.

I wonder what's the chance of the band playing a local LA club show, in between their Coachella dates? I recall, a few years back, BAD played the Roxy the night before their Coachella gig. Lately, many bands have been playing the ECHO. (Pixies, Afghan Whigs, Stones)

That being said, even in my long-ago youth I would never have gone to something like a weekend outdoor festival. That kind of vibey thing was never for me. To thine own selfy be true, and truthly I am VERY happy for Paul because he must be getting stupid money to do this. There are only a few musicians who have ever brought me the kind of happiness that Paul has and I wish them all well in every respect. I'm happy to be living in this time where I can rely on the many people who will use their phones and devices to bring me the music in the comfort of my home, because that is where I will be Coachella weekend.

Lately, many bands have been playing the ECHO. (Pixies, Afghan Whigs, Stones) Coachella/Golden Voice are pretty much assholes & usually have a "radius clause" to prevent bands from playing gigs pretty much anywhere in Southern California. Only way around this, I believe, is to play a "secret show" or play outside the radius (i.e. Santa Barbara). Although I remember Pulp played Pomona a couple years back the same week as Coachella... not sure if they've lifted the clause a bit because of the double weekends now. That being said... if The Mats play a secret gig at the Echoplex, I'd almost rather go to Coachella because both the sound & sight lines there are beyond epically terrible. I'd take pretty much any other venue in Southern California though. I'm still pretty torn about whether or not to go... I'm hoping to all hell that there are more dates announced but I also don't want to miss out if this is it... for a while or forever. : / Guess we'll see what happens for me tomorrow at 10am!

The fact that Coachella does live streams is great news.

I honestly think they deserve all of the money they can possibly make. I really do. I don't think they made anything when they were together. I would still extend the invitation for them to play in my backyard though... Even if I could afford to go to Coachella I'm certain I would die there and be trampled by the masses but surely I could survive your backyard - that is, if you don't mind sharing.

You had me at Neko......
Neko Case is one the finest songwriters and vocalists of the past decade or so. Seeing her on the same bill as our Mats would be awesome. However, I'm not making Coachella a vacation destination just yet.
Actually if I lived within a few hundred miles, I'd probably go to Coachella. Most of the bands I haven't even heard of but what the heck, it sounds like a great way to find something new and interesting. Neko Case, Outkast, Muse, Motorhead.....pretty diverse. Something for everybody. Definently not a dream lineup but some interesting artist in there.
Hats off to anyone who does go.
I'm also of the belief The Replacements will do something in addition to these festival shows... Lets see...

Yeah, I think I might drop dead at that event. I think it would be fine if you are under 30. I think my backyard could hold about 100 people in semi-comfort. And we have indoor plumbing.
