Just heard a Lemonheads cover of Things pop up on Spotify. I had no idea one even existed. Not bad.

In the new TV series version of High Fidelity, there is an episode (I think somewhere in between episodes 5 and 7) that features two Replacements songs. The first is a cover of “Rattlesnake” (no idea what band is doing it) during a chase scene. The second is the Mats’ recording of “Skyway,” which one character is putting on a mixed tape he’s making for a potential love interest.

Ha, in my diminished life, my wife and I have been watching this show (and actually liking it OK), and I've been thinking "these are the sort of people who would put on the Replacements now and then." We're just on the verge of episode 6, I think. Something to look forward to. I love "Rattlesnake" so much, and it's a bit odd to think of anybody bothering to cover it. It's perfect, spontaneous, and inimitable.

Was hoping she might say something to shed light on the mysterious events surrounding the recording session she walked out of with the Mats. If she remained mad about it, it is hard to tell, yet, there is a slight hint in the intro: 'This is a song by a band...by a friend of mine..umm.. by a guy I know....(garbled) he screwed it up plenty of times' She does a nice version and then finishes by saying it is a song by The Replacements with no malice in her tone. I have always wondered what really happened during that session. Johnette is a criminally overlooked voice in rock music. What pipes!

Agree, love Johnette's smokey voice. Always liked Concrete Blonde too....I think she's talked about it before and kind of rolling her eyes because Paul and Tommy were enamored with the idea that she was the only female singer on a Mats recording. Like they were making a bigger deal out of it than it was, to her at least. And then she pulled the old, "gonna go get some smokes" move on them. Hilarious! I can't remember where I read it, but I'm sure there are some articles on the internet about it.
I have one of her CD's Pretty and Twisted which has a co-written tune with Paul called "Stranger". I wasn't too keen on it.

I’m stuck in an office monitoring equipment and bored. I went searching to see if Slicing Up Eyeballs has a podcast, and saw a podcast called “Andy Hears the 80s.” I clicked on it, and the most recent one listed is about the Mats. So I’m listening to it. Not bad. A couple of guys with no knowledge of the band discovering them. A bit of rehashing Mehr’s book.
