First thoughts? I remember a comment Paul made at some point (was it in CFMT?) about what it's like in his head and I think maybe this 'album' is an aural representation of that...starts off pretty well-organized, then starts falling apart (in a very good way) and ends with snippets of random songs, like the radio dial spinning around, and landing on (of course) The Partridge Family and then a very strange, albeit very catchy, song (who is singing on that, is it Paul, it sounds like a kid, but that could be some weird vocal filter). It's exhilerating and exhausting!
best line on first line "in the whole wide bar" best rhyme on the first listen "uncle/drunk he'll"

Literally just grabbed it 5 mins ago and listening to the first couple of secs of it right now... review on the music to come later (or not). But to nit-pick on the experience so far... I paid $0.89 for it, not $0.49. and iTunes says it's 43:55, not 49:00. and of course it didn't become available on june 49th as planned. typical westerberg - good idea, came up a little short.

Not bad for a Reggae album by a band called Yellow Choice.
I also paid .89$, & I would also like my additional 45:05 of music please.

it's really, really, good. and just to let everyone know i posted the second song (one of my favs) on imeem the link is here www.imeem.com/guitarmusic/music/AJNxeapa/paul_westerberg_49/ i also have not listened to all of it yet, still letting that second and third song go through my head so i can memorize it. the first one was ok and might grow on me a little more. but for now i really like the second song, and the third.

Lots of PW's straightforward drumming, and ragged and raging electric guitars over this one so far. I see Everyone's Stupid made the cut. This definitely fits right in with Mono and Folker.

I don't really post here often (or keep up with the messages), but I figure I'd chime in. First, the album is available for 49 cents if you click on the purchase album link. The 89 cent price is if you click on the purchase song link. As for the album, I've listened to it twice so far, and am not 100% sure what I think of it.
It's bizarre, and very "artsy" at points, but very much paul-like. I definitely get the vibe of grandpaboy on this, and it does have the progression through it. It's just odd, I remember on the first listen thinking at times I had two media players open playing it. Definitely all over the place, but I think at the end I will grow to really like it. There's some good stuff in the mix, and it really is raw paul.

Reminds me a lot of Folker after the first pass. Some songs/segments I really like, some I really dislike. I really wish there was a tracklist - if for no reason other than to help organize my thoughts!
agree that song #2 is a nice demo for something that could be really great. song #3 is also very good and feels a little more "there" to me.
good rocker at the 15:00ish mark.
the "i'm clean" song near the end was also very enjoyable.
I liked the live version of Everyone's Stupid from the Miller show better than the segment here, but it's still a good, raw & emotional song.
LOVE the mash-up of covers near the end, but it left me wishing we could get the full tracks.
is that Johnny making his lead singing debut on the last track?
still need a few more listens to it all... but already it's the best 49/89 cents I spent today. ;D

typical westerberg - good idea, came up a little short. A little short - understatement - we can't even download it... that is a hell of a lot short if you ask me.... Please can someone make this available for download off their website or on bittorrent.... thanks

it's all over the place as stated by many, very mono/stereo, dyslexic and A.D.D. perhaps, but the hooks are plentiful. my wonder is whether this is leading to something more or not, because there's a lot of experimentalization here. the stuff at about 26:12 "keeping inside" might be among his most introspective, lyrics like "it's been hard on me" and "getting it out of my system." "some people know me, they're dreaming, some people love me, they're creaming. ... " a lot of jumpstarts and intermixed songs and incomplete sessions. fantastic hooks, though that i hope aren't lost on this because if you hen and peck through it, there are enough rockers to make you weep and yearn for something far more complete. it's grandpaboy and paul and the mats all stuck together. far rockier than folker and far more potential here than mono/stereo in my opinion.
sorry, i feel like dan rather on election night and i just can't get a grip on what's going on. but, in this case, it's not a bad thing because it's all so raw and new and very fresh and welcome.

there seem to be several references to Paul's dad dying ("good night sweet prince"). might this have been part of the inspiration? ... that and the injury that kept him out of work, and the lyric: "i've been crying for a year ... " 2nd listen through it and i like it even more. this just in: paul is a very good songwriter. i shake my head at all the people that don't understand or are preoccupied with the goddam coldplay ... sorry, couldn't resist. after this, i can't help but determine that they don't belong.

Can I just say: Yea! AND I hope this somewhat low-fi MP# release is just a precursor to a "real" CD AND it looks as if it is time to start whining about a tour.

Definitely a lot like the past few releases (YES!). It reminds me a lot of a cross between Folker and "Everything that Makes You Happy" on Suicane.
I love how it's all jumbled together. I want more rockers, but I'm only on track 3, so...
Oh, also, I know we've already seen the cover art, but as a Graphic Designer, I can only hope to design a cover as great as this. ;D

Sounds like he's in full recycle-mode: At 26:00, he has a lo-fi version of "Outta My System," a b-side which was released a few years ago.
Other than that, I've lovin' it so far.

I really like what I've heard so far. A few things threw me:
--the different (rougher) take on "Outta My System," with alternate lyrics. --the take-off on one of the greatest songs ever, Dylan's "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)": "Darkness at the break of six..."
Good stuff.

The "I'm Clean" track is reminiscent of something from Sorry MA (in my opinion), which is really cool.

I think I could listen to a whole album of covers sung by Paul. His brief vowel movement of "Goodbye, Hello" sounded great! And, of course, the Partridge Family!

so, IS everyone elses' copy 43:55? i think i read from some others about this issue, and i have it, too. ah well. is the recording supposed to start right off with the "terri, terri (carrie, carrie?) who you gonna marry"song?
it almost sounds like my download starts smack in the middle of a song... probably not, though.
i like what i have heard a lot, but it is maddening. i listened to it while my son & i ate breakfast, and i found myself often getting into a song, and then it just switches to another one, and then another.... maybe it is just because i wasn't able to pay full attention, but i found it interesting, very often thrilling, but almost as often disappointing because i didn't get a full song.
hopefully, this is a teaser, and we will get a "proper" album soon, but something causes me to doubt it. i can see paul REALLY liking this method of releasing music.
also, it does suck when our european friends get hosed, but just for balance i would like to mention that whenever paul WELLER releases an album i have to wait & wait & wait for it.

It was not clear how to get this for 49 cents so I paid the whopping 89 cents as well --- I guess -- it never asked to verify my credit card...just downloaded immediately...If I got if for free I'll have to mail Paul a few coins. Paul just might have an album that's unskippable ... is that possible? i've been up all night -- had been planning to hit the sack near 3 a.m. before i happened on this big development -- and now find myself avoiding my wife's weak demands that i go take a nap. there is something very pure about this thing. what a wonderful way to bring my 19-day vacation to a close. ...

Very cool. On my second listen. 1st was distracted by LA traffic. Maybe Johnny on that last song, maybe recorded when he was a little younger?
Thanks Paul!!
