****APPLAUDS WIDELY****
That was one of the dumbest topics in recent memory. However, the responses were marvelous. Perhaps Euphy was just trying to test the reaction time in case of emergency.

That was awesome.
There's a movie coming out about the theft/burning of Parsons' body, might be making the film festival rounds now actually. It'll probably suck but just thought I'd pass along the info.

I agree that this topic had a cool thread thus far. And it did wrap up so to speak.
But still, I must mention that I think the track "In my hour of darkness" is a stunner. Might be Gram it his finest. Finest 3 min. in his darkest hour!

As little as I know about Gram Parsons, I did find the story about Gram Parsons and his deceasedness.
So, please, someone explain in depth their love for Gram Parsons. I have never found the spark that makes him wonderful. There are a number of artists I feel this way about, but I'll just start with Mr. Parsons.
I'd really appreciate a different point of view on this.

Hey EM, have you ever heard the stuff he did with Emmylou Harris?

I do not like Emmylou Harris. Or the Eagles. Or twang. Or most music from California.

Hey EM, the Eagles and Emmylou Harris are worlds apart... btw, if you don't like twang, you might not like "Folker."

btw, if you don't like twang, you might not like "Folker." You're not implying that you've heard "Folker", are you? Has Paul hinted that it's going to twang? I'd love an album dominated by "Things"/"Achin' To Be" style twang.

I'm not trying to imply that my advanced copy of Folker is full of twangy type songs, but if you like Achin to Be, you're in for a treat. I'd make you a copy of the disc, but it's watermarked and could be traced back to me.

Ill give my input here and let me preface by saying Im no fan of country music per se. I find the new country increibly bad and the old stuff interesting on a kitsch level alone. But Gram Parsons stuff is really different. Some of the stuff is typically country rock although at the time he did it they called it Psychedelic Country and Gram himself referred to it as Cosmic American Music. Like I say Garth Brooks and most of the other new stuff is incredibly hokey but Grams stuff seems a lot more from the heart so to speak. Another thing about Gram is for every typical crying in the beer country song he does theres an honest to goodness gem. Before he was a solo act he was in the Bryds and Flying Burrito Brothers(who played the only peaceful set at Altamont BTW). If you listen to the Best of the Burrito Bros youll hear them pull off some amazing variety between country, r&b, and rock. Hot Burrito #1 believe it or not is actually a love song thats very well done...almost like the country rock version of the Beatles "Something."
Another thing about Gram is he was the first country rock guy who admitted doing drugs. Not that Drugs are a good thing but he was in the Okie from Muscogie era and that took some real nads to identify with the hippy drug culture at that time.
Another item is how close he was to Keith Richards who in an interview said out of all the people he knew who had died he missed Gram the most and said he could sit and listen to him play songs on his guitar hours on end. Of course when you had the money and time and loads of coke like Richards did that was very possible. lol Its also rumored that Parsons sings on some of the Exile on Main St tracks though its uncredited. During the time of the Exile recordings the rest of the Stones actually made Keith throw Gram out of the House they were all staying in saying that Grams drug use was excessive. When the early 70s Stones think youre out of control speaks volumes.
Anyhow Im rambling but Ben Fong Torres wrote a great biography of Parsons that really tells it like it is and recomended. I kind of got into him by hearing other artists say how influenced they were by him along with the fact he loved Joshua Tree monument out here in Southern California as did I. His stuff doesnt take immediatly but resonates and gets better every listen.
Other songs that are good... 1000 Dollar Wedding Juanita Sin City Dark End of the Street Return of the Grievous Angel
I wonder what Pauls take on GP is?

wow, this tread took off. i thought i said "the end" a page back...
parsons ruled the school, folks. everyone should get the fbb "anthology". it's a 2 disc set that covers 3 or 4 fbb albums (some with parsons, some without). gilded palace of sin is simply a stunning album.
and i don't believe anyone here has heard folker yet... save for lookin up to heaven.

Most of Gilded Palace can be found of Farther Along-the Best of the Burrito Bros along with some other tunes. Its a far cry from Goddamned Job or F*ck my School but good listening none the less.
