I'm opening myself for some serious flack, but this is my favorite Paul solo album. Any other love for this album?
If nothing else, it stands out as unique among his solo records. The songwriting is excellent (imho) and different. Plus, I'm a sucker for a few melancholy piano licks.

I love this album. It's has some of Paul's best, and most introspective songwriting on it. It's also his most eclectic album. Everything from, jazzy piano ballads, to flat-out rockers, to Dylanesque folkers.

Hey, count me in as well. I dig this album too. When I first heard it, it took awhile for it to sink in. And when it did, I just thought that Paul really matured as a songwriter.
A lot of fans gave PW crap becuz they hated it and wanted him to just thrash away on some simple three chord rock. The way I see it, Paul was growing as an artist and was expanding his boundaries. I'm more than happy to follow him to see what's next. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I won't. But I'd rather go along for the ride than be left by the side of the road....

Suicaine was the first PW record I heard. I still love it even though it may not be my favorite.

Wasn't there a poll on some thread about favorite PW solo records, and SG held up very well! Not alot of sales, and some critical bashing, but seems many liked it too. It still breaks my heart to hear it, and my wife who is no large PW fan, even got the sniffles over Bookmark.
Still his most honest work, wonderful lie and all.

I love this album, too. It was completely overlooked and the songs are brilliant (except "Actor in the Street" which sounds like a throw-away to me). I think my perception may be clouded by the fact that I turned 40 and my father died in 1999 and I could completely relate to the depressing tone of the album.

I'm another fan of this album. I admit I wasn't thrilled by it upon first listen mostly because I was expecting a rocking album. But after several more spins I liked it more and more. It is a much more simple album in that it is just PW all alone at his piano putting himself out there but the more you listen the more you hear the layers. There are a couple of tracks that still don't thrill me but overall it is solid. I do have to be in the right mood to listen to it though - not an album I like to put on to get revved up for a night out.

Agreed that personal circumstances can impact perception. SG sounds better when depressed! I think I read somewhere in an interview that PW was talking about depression, and said that usually when hit with it, he tries to do something to pull himself out of it (listen to the Who?). But when writing SG, he decided to not fight the depression, and see where it takes him. I think it shows in the songs.

I don't get it. The man can do almost no wrong in my eyes, but Suicaine is just unforgivably bad.
Should have been a 4 song EP.
I don't want him to play 3 chord thrash either. I just see SG as a tremendous collection of bad songs only overshadowed by their awful lyrics.

Wonderful Lie, Looking out Forever, tears running up our sleeves, Whatever makes you happy.
Self Defense- The piano fails to flow from the verse to chorus and is akward which highlights key lyrics that should have been buried in the mix somehow
Best thing that never happened- this song is like 24 minutes long right? 24 minutes of poor lyrics, no hooks, no dynamics. Worst song the man has ever put on a record.
Born for Me- Cool song if you like the Lilith Fair tour roster.
Final Hurrah- Sounds like an outtake from Eventually, and was best left as an outtake.
Fugitive Kind- This song is like 37 minutes long. Throw Pirner on there to try to cover up the fact that it is just awful.
Sunrise Always Listens- Sure it does. Do they let men on the Lilith Fair tour??
Actor in the Street- Yep. Who stole his brain and sense of self- editing??
Bookmark- Figured if he could get away with Actor in the Street then this might fly too. Didn't.

Wow, that's some serious hostility towards an album. Did this album kill a close friend or family member?
Seriously, I'm happy there is some support out ther for this gem. If I wasn't at work, I'd add some more observations, but I'm trying not to get fired.

Awwww shit, now I've gotta keep Mrs. Monkey away from the board, she loves "Born For Me" (played at our wedding) and would not be pleased to see it compared to Lilith Fair-tripe. I don't listen to this album all the way through very often but Wonderful Lie and Lookin' Out Forever stand up with anything he's ever written. I like Fugitive Kind, Tears Rolling Up Our Sleeve, and Born For Me a lot, everything else is kind of average. Except for Actor in the Street, which should be hunted and killed for sport.

Hostility?
The man dissappears and makes people wait a couple of years for a record and then offers SG??
yeah, I was and still am hostile.
it never killed anyone I am familiar with, but it sure killed an almost flawless reputation.

I don't listen to this album straight through either. I'd like to thank Paul for putting 'Bookmark' right at the end so I can turn it off after 'Actor' (which I like).

This is my fav CD too, it's the perfect balance. It doesn't sound like it was recorded in his basement in one day and it doesn't sound over produced like the some of the earlier stuff. 4 song EP? Fugitive King and Final Hurrah are two of my favorite songs.

Great album I agree, but not my fav and probably my 3rd fav...
Mono/Stereo #1 which isnt fair really because of the double album status...usually why I argue about Beatles albums, the WHITE ALBUM is not allowed! But what the hell, that was sooooooooooooo refreshing for me and a great uplift in my life to have the man put out something so raw and stipped, yet loaded with emotion...excellent stuff!
14 Songs #2-dunno what to say, great stuff all around I think, I like Paul when he gets a little dirty and raunchy
SG #3 - Great complete album.....my fav as far as Paul when I want to chill out a bit.....I could go on and on disecting the albums, but when its all said and done...IT'S ALL GOOD!

Suicaine was my fav solo album for some time (Mono currently holds the title, and CFMT is gunning in close). I like the bitter honesty and I think some of the more awkward musical moments (the piano on Self-Defense; the solo on Born For Me) reflect the emotions of the tunes. I love Fugitive Kind - it's Paul drawing a line in the sand, and I love the lyric "I'm a bad idea whose time has come." And when Looking Out Forever's lyrics become "loving you forever" it just breaks my heart.
Although bringing it all back to an early post, I was getting over a breakup when this came out, and it is one helluva breakup album, so that could've had something to do with my loving it.
Oh, and Actor kinda amuses me. The only song I have to skip is Sunrise Always Listens (too long).

Yeah. There lies a real good argument in there as to why couples should seek therapy rather than splitting up.
