Zook - it's funny that you should bring this up. I already did an ab workout today, as I do almost every morning. why am i telling you this? I have developed a method of excercise that tones the abs, and satisfies the whole body at the same time (if you know what I'm talking about). ching ching. Isn't ching ching the monkey from Speed Racer? If so, I don't think I want to know what you are doing with a monkey each morning. Otherwise, me thinks you will be renamed from 6Pac Lizzy to SheBop Lizzy.

umm... Jen, hate to interrupt, but I couldn't help noticing one glaring omission from your home state list: one of my all-time faves... guided by voices Last night I watched the DVD, "Watch Me Jumpstart." This is a must see for any GBV fans. The DVD has the original documentary from 1996? There's some great scenes, like Pollard recording songs, on a 4-Track (good to see the king of lo-fi, making good use of his limited resources). The DVD has some extras too, like all the videos (these are quite low budget, but very cool). There is also a concert included with the DVD.

...Nine Inch Nails, Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers... The Isley Brothers are from Lincoln Heights, a Cincy neighborhood...James Brown recorded at King Records in Cincy...and let's not forget Rosemary Clooney! Adrian Belew is also from town, and Peter Frampton currently lives in Indian Hill, the ritzy Cincy neighborhood. On the cooler side, there is a band named the Ass Ponys still around town, and Mojo Nixon lived here for a few years.

so Jeni....why don't you give us a link to your arts and entertainment paper, so we can read some of your work. I, for one, am dying to read about the Counting Crows (insert finger into mouth).

on a cinematic note, has anyone seen the movie "Gummo?... I only saw it once when it first came out and really enjoyed it. But since then I've never met another person who likes it.

hey Jenin, can you give me any info on "Staggering Statistics"? I want to know if they have recorded anything yet. The guitar player from the Afghan Whigs formed this band and they are to tour with "Twilight Singers". That guy is a badass guitar player and he is from Cincy and I want to know about his new rock. I spent lots of time myself in Cincy. Nice town if you are a white person and not dancing in the White Castle lobby.
Elizabeth, I am saddened that you gave my title away just because of a comment I made about a place you resided for a time. Counting the Crows do not suck. I have a 7 year old who loves their first album and has been saving up for their other records for several years.

He didn't have a name around there until recently? He is only one of the greatest guitarists to ever come out of the USA.
You know that guy from Counting the Crows wore that fake dread- lock wig when he wrote those lyrics don't you?
He also dated a Friends cast member. Wearing a wig, and dating a Friends cast member pretty much ruined it all for me.
It's a shame how shallow people judge artists sometimes by their actions and personal choices rather than the music or art they create. I am so shallow you can dip your feet in me and they will still be dry.

John Curly was the bass player for the mighty Whigs...
Rick McCollum played guitar, and yes he is great... As much as I like the new Blackberry Belle record from Twilite Singers, the one thing that is missing is all those cool, bending, twisted, atmospheric guitar parts going off in the midst of Dulli's self-absorbtion....

The interview I read with Dulli did not mention any names. he simply said the Whigs guitarist had a new band. That he had named the band 'Staggering Statistics" and that the same guy had named the Afghan Whigs. He also noted that this guy was now 2 for 2 on wretched names for bands. I hope it was the guitarist. That guy needs to keep playing. he is extremely talented. I guess I will have to wait for a record or a demo and see who it sounds like.
Dulli might be self absorbed, but at least he owns up to it, never wore a dread wig, and never dated a sit com character.
If you are going to get naked with someone, you really can't play anything else except Afghan Whigs, or Miles Davis, or the new Twilight Singers. Now that I am no longer "Mr. Know it All" I would like to be the authority on people getting naked.
Thank You.

yes indeed Bigwheel, the Whigs' music is probably about the best thing you can find for make-out music (albeit, that of the dark fucked-up sort...)
my buddy Paul played drums for them during the Black Love days...
go easy on Mr Duritz... anyone who opens their debut album with the lines:
"step out the front door, like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the contrast between white on white..."
can't be all bad...
