I know I always fall in love w/ the song, then try to figure out the song, get 300 interpretations of the song and then just go back to loving the song.
BTW, I love this song!

I had never even thought of it being about not belonging. Until this thread started. Thats why I love this site, just turned me on to a whole new way of listening to that song. (and it is a GREAT song)

I've always thought he meant it as "lets not be long together" as in: lets have a one nighter and not make it linto anything that lasts for too long. Like he's into her, but her personality is too much to deal with. Such as:
Yours is tense Mine is dull You take offense I take a full minute just to notice
But the more I think about the "lets not belong, together" interprtation...I like that one even better.

I like Blasty have been under the Let's Not Belong, Together. Here's some lyrics that have pushed me in that direction.
We don't belong to different worlds There's nothing wrong with us whatsoever Let's not belong together
We pledge allegiance to the fucking sky Above the only place we really lie We pledge allegiance to the fucking sky The only place that makes us feel alive

Oh my -- that's an interesting take. I don't think I've heard it that way before. I'll have to go give it another listen and ponder the song all over again. Thanks for the fresh perspective.

We don't belong to different worlds There's nothing wrong with us whatsoever Let's not belong together Funny, that's the same verse that made me think its about a guy getting out of the relationship, though he doesn't want to lie and say "it's me, I need more space" or tell her that she's defective. They are both fine for the most part, but lets agree to go different way... there's no spark but it doesn't have to be because one of them is in the wrong. However, i like BlasT's take too...guess we can use this tune for whatever our mood by be a the moment?

Challenge: Can anyone locate the video that came out with "Let's Not Belong (Together)"? As I recall, it was posted on the label's website for a short time around the time Mono came out. It had a radio or speaker of some kind and then a cut out in the image through which you could see what looked like old video of the Mats playing live. I haven't seen it in years and wasn't able to find out online just now. Edit: Here's what it looked like on the old Vagrant webpage.

I've thought that "yours is up, mine is out" referred to female/male anatomy.

I have always heard it as a love song of the misfits. Let's not belong, together. We don't really fit in with the worlds we are thrust into. Furthermore, we don't really even make sense together, but let's give it a shot anyway. Those are my two cents at least.
