Lots of fans new and old dismiss this record as a bunch of noise, but I'd like to point out that it contains what I consider a contender for greatest song ever - "Go."
That couple of minutes is so mean and earnest and howlingly lonely...I'm a little surprised it isn't mentioned more often as one of PW's evergreeens. To me it's at least as engaging as "Answering Machine," if not more so.

to me stink and sorry ma both rate as high as each other the only reason sorry ma is my favourite is because it has 10 more songs than stink. they will always be their best work to me.

sorry ma... The records that came after the 1st 2 (regardless of production problems) are my favorites.....
I like the rawness and you can hear the promise that shows up in what was to follow......

In my mind "Go" is a big foreshadow of "Within Your Reach."
Remember how the punk scene was when "Stink" was released? I cannot imagine that they ever got away with playing "Go" live...well, unless there were lots of chicks there.

In my mind "Go" is a big foreshadow of "Within Your Reach." And an even bigger foreshadow of Nirvana.

You can listen to that album in it's entirety at full blast, at 3:00 am, and it's over before the police arrive.

Agree. Stink=excellent. The riff in Kids Don't Follow knocks your socks off and F*ck School knocks the rest of your clothes off and satisfies you in a way your girlfriend never could.

I still like Sorry Ma better. Stink had some funny tunes though. "White and Lazy" is funny. And lets not forget "Dope Smoking Moron"

It has it's share of blow offs, sure, but "Go" still gives me chills 45 years later. ;D

God Damn Job was one of the first Mats songs to get me hooked. And it's one of Bobs best solos IMO.
I remember being 22 years old and having just gotten laid off and listening to that song as I drove around appying for another God Damn Job.

The older I get the more I like the thrash on the the first three albums. These songs are the way I remember the eighties. Lots of smoke and liquor and loud music. I saw The Replacements at the Orpheum in '87 or '88 or something I don't know -- I saw them every chance I got from '84 on -- somebody yelled to play "Fuck School". Westerberg's voice was shot though, probably from liquor and cigarettes, and they played something else "Just as good as "fuck school" but easier on the voice" was what he said. Just a Stink live anecdote.
Turned on a 20 year old to the Replacements and the early stuff is what he likes best. We listened to Come Feel Me Tremble and he asked, "Has this guy made any other stuff?" I threw in "Sorry Ma" and he was hooked.

I also find myself always going back to "Sorry Ma" and "Stink"... you just can't beat that energy. I really love those live Quicktime movies on the Twin Tone site where they just blaze through the old tunes! It's hard to believe it's 20+ years old....
Always loved "Stuck in the Middle"....sounds like a rollercoaster about to jump off the tracks.
I never got to see Bob live (only saw the Don't Tell a Soul and ASD tours) but it was kinda cool seeing Paul @ the Fillmore in 96 when he whipped out 'Customer' and "I'm in Trouble"

Sorry Ma, Stink and Hootenanny are all simply awesome records. I like every album the Mats did, but I'm more into raw aggressive music.

Of course Stink, Sorry Ma..., and Hootenanny are great albums. They had BOB STINSON in them. As much as I like Slim as a person and performer, the Replacements died with Bob.
