i love both "trumpet clip" & "gary's got a boner". in fact, it is clear to this listener that the former is the continuation, book 2, the sequel, what have you to the latter.

I'm in the same position as 'BurningWheel' and surprised no one is stepping up to help those who missed out. I'm even willing to do a trade from my 'Mats/PW collection of rarities or send a couple bucks postage, whatever it takes. Drop me a note @ theoriginalshecky@yahoo.com if you can help out, thanks!........OS Members help each other out here, trust me. If you spend some time here you will find that out. I've helped a few people get this that couldn't, as have others that I know. You're a new member with only 2 (self-serving) posts. Spend a bit more time here and share some thoughts, you'll find people will be willing to share stuff with you too. open ice body check from the cannuck!

i guess for me what is missing is the energy of 3 or 4 guys in a room ramming out a song. all together in one take with little to no overdubs. it's tough to get that energy by one's self when tracking. i can get behind this. i love 49/5, but the above quote makes a lot of sense for me.

oh gilligan.
criticism of paul is not that revolutionary. paul gets a ton of shit here when he releases an album, i think. however, like you said, we're all fans, and all of us here will always buy what he offers. but dave is also completely correct, i think, in that the response has been pretty universally great to 49/5 largely due to the novelty & surprise of it.
if i had my way, i would like to hear paul take 49/5 into a professional studio with m. bland, blomquist, and bowe, and cut an ep with:
who you gonna marry? devil raised a good boy i'm clean good night, sweet prince 5:05
so far, all three posters on this thread agree that paul has great songs, good songs, ok songs, and a few big ass clunkers. so again, gilligan, i don't know if you haven't been paying attention, but criticism is allowed, and indeed, the norm.
just be cool about it; which you were. easy peasy.

check it out if you have an interest in mpls, mn music (trashmen - dylan - prince - replacements - hold steady - etc). go to www.mpr.org, click listen now to "news". it'll probably be archived so you can listen to it later, but it is going on right now. they are on the trashmen/castaways late 60s stuff right now.

if you are unfamiliar with amy ray's solo work, you should really check it out. "stag" & "prom" are great rock & roll records. she songcheck's the mats on her song sober girl. i think that's the one. she sings, "when we were young, we were achin' just to be..."
i am going off of memory, so that might not be exactly right. anyway, amy ray rocks hard.

can anyone confirm or deny if "starfucker" was played either at the pantages shows or on the ensuing tour? i might be way, way, way off base.

i don't think anyone played "happy" at r.f.k., but indeed "dead flowers" was played, and paul participated.
now, for my conjecture... didn't paul play "before they make me run" at one of the pantages shows? the one i didn't go to (kicks self for missing #3)? or was that "starfucker"?

i hope you're right, tom, but there needs to be a lot more msm coverage for non-fan dl's to happen en masse. there needs to be a story on the nightly news, paul needs to appear on the daily show/letterman/leno. pitchfork & paste, god bless 'em every one, are not enough to make people just go out & curiosity dl the album. the masses know nothing about 49:00 at this point. it needs to be talked about on e! before the masses start dl-ing it. basically, when my mom brings it up to me, i will know the masses are informed. and she DOES occasionally does bring up paul to me

it's official - "devil raised a good boy" is the greatest song of all time. the last solo (after he yells "go johnny" or whatever) is balls to the wall. the rumble as it ramps up, the squall of noise in the middle. it's sort of what the guitar was made for as far as i am concerned.

that said, if this is a stand alone release, and the next album by paul contains none of these numbers, well, ok. i am fine with that, too.

i'm listening again to it, and holy hell is it good. i would love to hear a "professional" recording of a good number of these songs; complete with jim b., michael b., and kevin b. maybe?
if nothing else, i would like to hear "devil" turn up on a future album, for sure. yes, it rocks hard.
