Have these bands ever crossed paths? Let It Be and the first self titled Violent Femmes album are pretty classic teen angst/coming of age albums released around the same time, and both bands are from the midwest.

The reunited Mats and Violent Femmes both played Riot Fest In Chicago, 2013. Looking for something older...

I don't think they played on the same day at Riot Fest.I was there for the Replacements and remember the Pixies and Bob Mould,Suicidal Tendencies,Mission Of Burma,Best Coast. J Mascis was stage side during the Replacements set.You can see him on Youtube videos.

Yeah interesting question. The Femmes played (literally) anywhere and everywhere around Wisconsin in the early-mid 80s, but by the late 80s they were significantly bigger than the Replacements, at least in the upper midwest. Blister in the Sun was a high-school/frat-girl hit (years after it came out), and they were playing big theaters by fall `88 just as the mats were transitioning from clubs to mid-sized theaters on the DTAS tour in `89. But given the proximity of Milwaukee to Minneapolis and both bands regional footprint in the early years `82-`85 it's certainly possible.
That first Femmes record is so good. We played that to death back then.

Intriguing question. God, how I love 'Good Feeling.' Of course, it's completely fascinating just as long as we aren't talking about Nirvana

In 1982 I lived near Oarfolk and stopped in there frequently. I think it was Peter Jesperson that recommended I go see this new Group called The Violent Femmes at 7th street entry. They were awesome, three piece band with acoustic guitar, stand up bass and three piece drum kit with a snare, top hat and upside down washbasin thing. I saw the Femmes many times in those early days, they played First ave after the record came out and after that moved to the bigger places like the Orpheum. I did bring my 20 year old to see them last year at First ave. They are still a great show with two original members. I don’t recall them being billed with the matts.

Bill Sullivan's 'Lemon Jail' sheds some light on this question on page 82. He says that The Mats opened for The Violent Femmes in Raleigh, N.C. at The Pier in 1983. Though it is not stated concretely, it sounds as if it was a short string of shows with both bands on the bill. An anecdote about scoring the bass player for The Femmes some Pernod is included. I think The Violent Femmes are mentioned in passing later in the book too.
Hope this helps!
