That double bill was the first concert that I ever saw. It was at the Orange County Speedway in Middletown, NY on 8/18/89. The show has long been widely available on video and is now up on YouTube. First band I ever saw live was the Mats with Paul starting the show with that faux striptease throwing the jackets into the crowd. They looked like they had a pretty good time and I was floored. yesterday's sad news had me seeking out this thread. Thanks to the originator of this one (thepogo). I, too, was at the Middletown NY/Orange County Fair Speedway show where Petty and the Heartbreakers closed for the Replacements. At least that's what it was for me. As great as TP and crew were/are, we were there to see Paul and the boys. The closing act could have been Loverboy or Def Leppard for all we cared. While the crowd was a little thin, the Mats fans were vocal and passionate. We were there for them, we cared and I like to think the band felt it. My most lasting memory of the show was "Answering Machine". That one, for sure, wasn't something that a typical TP fan would hear. Rough, raw, flawed, hearfelt. It was perfect. Anyway....I will miss Tom Petty's wonderful songwriting. For my money, he is a master. A great performer. A unique and original singer. And he counts Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne as huge fans and co-conspirators. That's pretty damn good company. When I have a chance, I think I'll listen to Mudcrutch's cover of the The Byrd's/Roger McGuinn tune "Lover of the Bayou". I recommend it if you are not familiar with it.

someguyiniowa, great lines cannot be copywritten. The country music scene is notorious for this...

And you know, I've never seen the band as anything resembling, "bitterness, resentful or depressing" regarding their status pn the charts or the TP tour.
They were just normal guys thrust into the system and the MO that I get from listening to their music for a few decades is:
HOPE - despite how depressing this world can be/is.
MASSIVE creativity
and just...
Pure fun. I dont give a fuck kinda fun. Life is just better when there's a good 'Mats tune playing.

Still you know Paul had to be thinking at some point while watching Tom's reception by the crowd:
'It must be "good to be king...just for one day"....
Tom left behind a library of great, well-crafted songs. I hate that he is gone. We lost a pillar of straight up rock.

Someone once told me that his gift was to be able to take three obvious chords and a comfortably familiar approach and make a great new song out of it...Such that other people were left wondering: "Why didn't I think of that!" He had the kind of songs that I would hear for the first time and be convinced that it must be a cover of some great lost minor hit that I had heard in childhood and forgotten about...No, Tom wrote it...I really respect that...

Never realized how much "Merry Go Round" and Pettys "Woman in Love" look alike.

I love Petty and I feel that he saw something special in the Mats (and rightfully so). Clearly he had good taste. RIP to one of the best.

I was at the Detroit (Pine Knob) show as well and agree that it was really great. In fact, up until the reunion, the Pine Knob Petty gig was probably my favorite Mats show ever. They were in such a great mood that night, they were loose but still tight (if that makes sense) and the setlist was perfect for an opening slot. My favorite moment was when Paul ran about 35 rows into the audience to dance with his ex-wife during Love Lost. There is a great tape of that show floating around which I had a little something to do with! Yep - I have that recording. It is great! Paid about $15 for it at Off The Record in Royal Oak not long after the show. It was the DTAS tour, but the set was all PTMM except I'll Be You, Achin' to Be, Love Lost and Happy (if I remember correctly). Do you still happen to have a lossless copy? I'd love to distribute it losslessly.

I’ve been listening to Petty’s Wildflowers box set lately. A really great, subtle disc about leaving behind what you have, in search of greater happiness. I listened to a Broken record podcast recently with Petty’s daughter where she speaks about it. A very nice listen.

I still have the cassette, but it's up on Dime now and It's most likely the same source, maybe a gen or 2 lower, no idea.

The boys in the Replacements really seemed to bond with Benmont Tench on that tour. He joined them onstage to play on some numbers (at least in Atlanta) and fit in terrifically.
He could have been the 5th Mat !

Ah darn, I can't use Dime. Thanks for responding though Hey dharmanovel, I'm happy to trade with you if you aren't able to use Dime. I've been grabbing all of the loughney xfers that he's been posting while trying to maintain my ratio, but I have most of the mats stuff that's been posted on Dime. New to this board, so this might be the wrong place for this response, and I apologize if so. I'm looking for a number of boots that aren't on Dime. Here's a few I'm hoping to get Lossless versions of: 1980-12-06 - Longhorn Bar Minneapolis, MN - Audience 1982-08-17 - First Avenue Minneapolis, MN - SBD 1982-10-01 - 7th Street Entry Minneapolis, MN - SBD 1982-10-30 (or 10/31) - Merlyn’s Madison, WI - SBD 1983-02-?? - CBGB's New York, NY (Pretty sure this date is incorrect as they didn't go East Coast til '83) Alright if anybody has a line on that stuff and wants to do some trades, shoot a message and I'll be please to meet ya! Stoked to see some Mats fans on the web. Best tmats

I have downloaded tons of Replacements from Dime and usually upload them on my archive.org page. I also been comparing to see what's an upgrade or not. Sometimes Loughney's uploads are upgrades compared to the mp3 copies I have, and sometimes downgrades. And even the case of being a second source sometimes. Anywho, I can be found at cfstech2018@gmail.com or on Discord as Signals From Above#1366
