Off and on, during the time I've spent reading Keith Richards book Life, I often find myself thing about Paul Westerberg. There are definite connections between the two. In my brief visit at his bus steps, Paul said to me, "I love Keith Richards". No doubt about it. And Richards (I wish I had permission to call him "Keef"- that's such a cool name) loved Paul's "Knockin' On Mine". What other connections are there?
We've pondered here at MWT almost endlessly about "Will Paul play again", "Will Paul tour again" "Will Paul make another record". I've generally agreed with the sentiment that Paul has a family to care for and has given so much that we should just be grateful and not expect more. Basically I think that's true. But reading Life- man, that guy Keef...I mean Keith... has raised three good kids, been a good family man (all things considered) and at 204 years of age (he sleeps about 1/3 the average person so 68X3= 204) he's still putting out work. He said, "I'll work 'till I croak.
I'm starting to wish Paul would get back to work (I know, as if I have a right to expect that). So somebody set me straight. Or get Keith to call up Paul and light a fire under his arse.

Maybe he can get Paul to cover All About You off of the Emotional Rescue album. Would be killer! LIFE is a fantastic book. You get the feeling he could do 10 more and not run out of stories.

He said, "I'll work 'till I croak... No one loves Keef & Stones as much as me, but your info is not correct. I read Life too & loved it, but I don't see in there where he 'raised' 3 good kids ... if they turned out great, that was despite Keith's parental abilities. He kept a loaded gun around with Marlon, others were fearful to wake Keith when it was time to play so they had Marlon do it (not the best environment for a kid) ... and Keith basically abandoned Angela having his mother basically raise her, not Keith -- Keith & Angela did not even speak for many years, and only were reunited several years ago. And don't forget, one of his toddlers died while in the care of his heroin addicted wife, Anita. I love Keith, but more because I love his music, funny ways, disposition, etc. but I would never stretch that into saying he was a great parent. And as for the "I'll work 'til I croak", when has Keith worked in the past several years? He hasn't had a solo album in over 10 (15?) years & the Stones put an album out ever 7 years or so -- PW's output is far more vast than the Stones over the last 10 years, no doubt about that. On a good note, Keith is supposedly recording new material (finally!) with the Winos for a new album, hopefully out before year's end.

That's good to hear. I like solo Keith.

I certainly agree about Keith's parenting skills. PW is much more domestic than Keith has ever been.
Well, the Stones toured the world twice, released a pretty good record, a killer live movie and an amazing reissue of Exile. On his own, Keith released his memoir, which was quite substantial, released the Wino's best of, and guested on over a dozen releases - including a Hank Williams tibute and releases by Ronnie Spector, Les Paul and Jerry lee Lewis. And even though it's kinda lame, he's had cameos in a couple blockbuser movies.
PW was very productive from 2001-2004, but with the exception of the soundtrack, he's been in the basement since. The basement downloads of the last couple years had their charm to some, but they don't exactly represent great thought or effort (yeah, I know, I know, that's supposedly part of the charm). I don't think it's all that cut & dry - Keith has been busy.
Yeah, when he mentioned that on Fallon I was elated. I love those Winos records - both of them, and the live record. Better than anything the Stones have done since the 70s, I think, I like some of the Stones output from the last 30 years.

Maybe Paul could be compared more to John Lennon right now,who hung his guitar up on the wall for five years to raise his son.

There you go- maybe Paul's been waiting for Johnny to get good enough for them to do a family music thing. The bottom line of course is it's Paul's life. I just hope he reads Keith's book LIFE and gets inspired to put out some work again. Reading that book inspired me to learn some new guitar skills (particularly open G tuning) and get excited about the Stones' and Keith's music all over again.

Wow, these posts were from 2011!!??
Anyway as an update, Keith's album has been out, well over a year now, maybe 2. There's a lot of slower songs on it but to me this is an amazing album! Keith's vocals are amazing on it and the songs are really good/well written. My favorite is the country'ish Robbed Blind. Trouble, the single, is similar to Eileen, but I think much better!

Thanks for the heads up on this! Ordering now.
Funny to see this thread has the word 'connection' in it. That was a great Keith song off of an overlooked and underrated Stones record (Between the Buttons).

Other connections? The Mats opened a show for Keith in 88. The Mats were on the same show (Jimmy Fallon) with Keith in 2014. I think Keef is on record saying that he was a huge fan of 'Knockin' on Mine'.

Man, that SNL appearance was an amazing version of "Knockin' on Mine", that damn thing gave me the chills, it was so good and rocking. Listening to the studio version seems so tame in contrast, lol...
Wonder if there are outtakes from the studio sessions where they really let it rip. But anyway, I guess Keith loved that groove Paul got on the song.

I remember a story of Don Was telling Paul that the Rolling Stones really liked Knocking On Mine and that they wanted that sound for their album (which I assume Was was producing).
