If this has been covered before, accept my apologies.
I've always seen the following line in this song written on lyrics sites as follows:
"Clean your baby womb, trash that baby boom Elvis in the ground, there'll ain't no beer tonight"
I've always heard the lyric as "Elvis and the Colonel, are waiting up here tonight"
What do y'all think?

Hmmm... the "official" version of that line has always bugged me.
Would have to listen again to be sure (feeling lazy) but I like it. Doesn't help that Paul loves to change this line live.

Yeah.....I've seen him sing this differently live as well. It's funny..........I've always heard it as "Elvis and the Colonel" since I first heard it on my turntable years ago ( I'm a big Elvis fan as well ), and the line "they'll ain't no beer tonight" doesn't make much sense -- especially with PW's writing skills.

I've always heard:
Clean your baby ROOM Trash that baby boom Elvis in the ground No way he'll appear tonight

I've always heard "Elvis in the ground."
edit: just listened to it again, along with a few live versions... I'm 100% sure that I hear "Elvis in the ground."

Doubtful. From today's perspective it makes sense to think of Elvis and the Colonel hanging out as ghosts together, but when the song was written (1985-ish) Colonel Tom Parker was still very much alive. CF

CF[/quote] Sure -- the Colonel didn't die until well after the song was written, maybe Paul was seeing the future.....

I have always heard this as Elvis in the crowd, and we're up here tonight. As in look what we've become. Elvis is now the spectator and we're the main attraction.

Clean your baby room Crash that baby, boom Elvis in the ground No way, no beer tonight
I don't know, but that's always been my take on it.

After 25 years of listening to this song, I now realise that what I thought was:
Income tax deduction One helluva function
is actually:
Income tax deduction One and only function

Elvis in the ground They're waiting on beer tonight Income tax deduction One helluva function According to the recently published Paul Westerberg Songbook, it's "there ain't no beer tonight."....but who knows if that is correct. CF
