I probably need some help on a few of these words --
Dangerous Boys – Paul Westerberg
(Db) They come from nowhere And everywhere to share your bed. When they’re asleep At least you won’t feel dead.
Dangerous boys – all break in the night. Fall to pieces – in front of your eyes You mend them back together – and make em feel safe. Except for that one boy – who keeps breaking like a wave.
They ask you, ‘where am I?’ ‘Where am I going, where have I been?’ You tell ‘em, ‘Don’t cry’ It don’t matter cause your coming with.
Dangerous boys – all break in the night. Fall to pieces – a secret for your eyes You mend them back together – and make them feel safe. Except for that one boy – who keeps breaking like a wave.
Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey
If God is their ocean, You’ll be in a dangerous land Treat ‘em with the motion Dammit quit playing in your sand. Seen them shatter, seen them scatter – to the wind. It doesn’t matter because you won’t be coming with.
You mend them back together, with a little tape, and your faith. Except for that one boy – who keeps breaking like a wave.
Mend them back together – send them out the door. Except for that one boy – who keeps crashing at your shore.
Crashing, at your, shore – shore

Except for that one boy – who keeps breaking like a waif.
obvious point, i guess, but that can be heard as "wave" or "waif" ... pretty clever

I've been hearing wave, what with all the breaking & crashing. Yea, but I'm starting to think Paul intended for us to hear it either way..."Wave" makes more sense when you think of the ocean, but "waif" covers the aspect of little boys...The song is obviously pure genius. CF

I probably need some help on a few of these words -- Dangerous Boys – Paul Westerberg One other point to consider which my wife (who is not really into all this stuff) observed...The "one boy" in the song is probably not Johnny.....its Paul... CF...

yeah, no doubt he intended the waif/wave thing. The phrase "Except for that one boy" reminds me of "Only Lie Worth Telling": "Or Harry Houdini, He's escaped your grasp, That one is hard to hold, Try telling you that"

I'm convinced that is what he is saying lyrically since waves are more commonly broken than "waifs"....He may want us to think "waif", however, since it rhymes perfectly with "safe".. and fits the song.. Was Time Flies Tomorrow his last song with breaking waves? If so, that argues for this EP being his internet-era Eventually.

I believe it was "break like a white cap."...but, he also sang "break like a pinata."...And possibly his most absurd metaphor --- "eyes like two hubcaps at the bottom of the river." Yikes! CF

"They come from nowhere And everywhere THEY share your bed."
"They come from nowhere And everywhere TO share your bed." ? maybe? that's how I remember it.

"It don’t matter cause you're coming with" and "It doesn’t matter because you won’t be coming with" ... I was already wondering about those when out of the blue today a couple people I was with got in a discussion about the expression "come with" being a Minnesota saying that other people don't use, or not nearly as much anyway. That so?

That so? Yea, I had to listen to the 'coming with' phrase a few time.. Ultimately I had to assume there is an implied (but unspoken) "me" at the end. see Minnesta slang dictionary for expanation of term "coming whid" www.brownielocks.com/minnesotatalk.htmlCF

That so? We use that in Northern Ontario too... Though I suppose we're not all that much different.
