AXSTV has a show called ‘Rock Legends’. Half hour snapshots about specific rock topics. I just watched an episode called “Alt Rock”. It was very Janes Addiction and Smashing Pumpkins heavy, but after a quick mention about the origins with the Velvets, the Stooges and the NY Dolls, they went into the Mats, and showed this.
I’m so glad this night was captured.

There is a podcast called LIFERS hosted by Local H frontman Scott Lucas. A recent episode is an interview of Michael Bland. Insights about Prince and the Minneapolis scene, including stories about Westerberg and the Replacements. A good listen.

We opened for Soul Asylum (and Local H) in Detroit last week and talked quite a bit to Mr. Bland. He's a great guy. He said he gets asked about Paul constantly. I'll def check this out.

That Lasso episode should have played more of Nightclub Jitters. It would have fit in many times during that rather strange episode. I jumped out of my seat when it began. Very cool…

That's awesome, Jer. Remember when Michael B showed up here on the board? He's a helluva nice guy, I had some PM's with him...he told me Paul kept playing the Stones on the tour bus during that tour! Michael B is a fantastic drummer.

A snippet of 'Swingin' Party' being covered by a band called Kindness opens the 2015 movie 'Paper Towns'. Someone has probably mentioned this before but I was surprised.
'Swingin'Party' is easily a top five of all-time Mats song for me. It will not dislodge '16 Blue' at the top anytime soon but it's up there!

Not a sighting but it would be cool if we had one of Paul at the Stones tonight. Caught an LA show and it was great. Paul would enjoy, imo🙂

Just watched the Bash & Pop performance on KEXP from 2017. (It’s on the ‘Tube.) Is Tommy hammed? Lol. Love the guy.

Yeah. Sad. You can definitely tell good nights vs bad nights from his singing.

Yeah. Sad. You can definitely tell good nights vs bad nights from his singing. Sad? Looked pretty damn fun to me. I found this to be pretty typical of a "good" performance from this lineup. I don't think Tommy comes off as wasted - he's coherent and on time and pitch as much as he ever is on a good night. Not much slurring or laziness. The band is on fire, as always, but he's not struggling to keep up or holding the energy back, IMO.
Sometimes, when all you have to go by is a record or being in the audience at a live show, and you hear a "live in the studio" or a straight soundboard feed, they're really unforgiving. KEXP has it down for sure, but it's very "live" and any flaws present aren't covered up by recording/mixing techniques or a concert PA system.
That said, there have been consistency issues in recent years, and some sad performances for sure.

Old tensions between the Replacements and R.E.M.? Do tell. I remember stories when The 'Mats would open for REM; Paul and the guys would wait until REM hit the stage, then break into their dressing rooms and steal all of their booze. I think their rivalry with REM was more serious than Husker Du. REM was far more successful, and there were times when Westerberg would get frustrated wondering how and why, since at one point, the two bands were neck-and-neck in college rock in the early 80s. I also remember reading a piece on Westerberg when he was doing the record store tours and hanging out at his bus after shows signing stuff. Michael Stipe was waiting quietly for Paul to finish so they could hang out.
