1. From The Sex Revolts by Simon Reynolds: p. 256 ...Phair's critical succés d'estime is based on the way she manages to inhabit garageland rock 'n roll yet inflect it with a confessional vulnerability. More specifically, she has feminized an alternative rock tradition usually associated with men: the geeky songsmith a la Elvis Costello or Paul Westerberg of the Replacements. this was written in '96 before Liz decided the best way to sell records was to straddle a guitar naked.2. From Skyscraper #11 Summer 2002 (stack of old magazines at a used record store), an interview with Anthony Roman from Radio 4: ...Everything got so ironic--indie rock, indie film. I don't have time for that and I am not interested in how clever you are. The Replacements were one-hundered percent honest lyrically. You could tell through Paul Westerberg's vocal style that he means it. Many of those (indie) bands don't mean it...From Hootnanny to Pleased to Meet Me, I will put Westerberg against Dylan, Lennon or anybody. He is a massive influence. 3. Yesterday I heard 'I Don't Know' as part of a block of songs with maniacal laughter. I forget what the other two were. Those are really good, kgp. You definitely had the random replacements sightings of the day, week even.

I was shopping with the missus over the weekend and as I walked into one store I heard a familar tune - As Far As I Know blarring over the speakers. It sounds damn fine playing throughout a store I must say.

This certainly isn't a Paul/Replacements sighting, but this seemed like the best place to post this. I was watching the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. Tom Everett Scott (the actor) happened to make the final table. Yeesh, if they wouldn't have said who it was I would have thought it was Paul sitting there. There always been a resemblance, but it almost seems that he's trying to look like him. Who knows, maybe he's after Winona Ryder. And yes, of course, in true Paul fashion, he didn't win.

That's who I picked to play Paul in the "If They Made A Replacements Bio Movie" thread back in December, after seeing him in "Karroll's Christmas". Yesterday afternoon I'm playing NTN Trivia at Hooters, and one of the questions concerning '80's music (Can't remember the exact question) had these 5 answers: 1) Some band I can't remember 2) Replacements 3) Some band I can't remember 4) Husker Du 5) Some band I can't remember I should have taken notes, but I was amazed the 'mats and the Huskers both showed up on NTN on the same day. Is one of us writing the questions?

A few years ago we drove by a Hooters after dark. The neon sign in front had two of the letters burnt out. The sign then read "Hoors". Which was pretty darn funny at the time.

this is a near random replacements siting of the day.
i went to see "Lords of Dogtown" and in the movie they started playing "20th Century Boy." of course in all my myopia i thought immediately it was a replacements song. but then i remembered it was only a cover.

How was the movie? I'm not very interested in skate boarding but I liked the documentary that has been on IFC a lot. I thought it would be bad from the commercials but Henry Rollins gave it a good review on his show.

While watching the Ramones documentary "End of the Century" last night, "The Replacements" name was flashed across the screen, as the narrator talked about the increase in cool bands forming after The Ramones came out.

that's a nasty cough you got there, faf the MPLS Star Tribune had a big thing on the Hold Steady, the band that formed out of MPLS band Lifter Puller. How they are hot in their new homebase of New York, the first NY band in five years to appear on the cover of the Village Voice (hmm ... seems a certain MPLS band of the mid-80s did that too). Anyway, here's the relevant part from the Voice's May 2 cover story on a band someone else has disparaged as "later-period Soul Asylum fronted by Charles Nelson Reilly." "[Craig Finn] was the Minnesota dude who was hip enough to think of the Replacements and Hüsker Dü as local rock. "The 'Mats were one of the first things I got into," Finn says. "I thought of them as an unsuccessful rock band, not like punk or part of the underground." But he was still suburban enough to need his folks to drive his 12-year-old ass to the shows." www.villagevoice.com/music/0518,fgross-,63579,22.html The Hold Steady plays Grand Old Day in St Paul today at 1 p.m., but as always I will miss them due to the inevitable conflict.
