Does anybody know what this song is about exactly? I believe I read/heard in an interview that it's about a female fan & long time friend of the band who is no longer alive. Or did I dream that? N

That sounds accurate. By the lyrics, I couldn't tell whether it's about a lost love of Paul's (which a reviewer said), or about a groupie that serviced the band, which is very unlike them, which is why I was so curious to find out the true story of the song.

Hmmm ... two songs where the first line or verse ends in "FLA"
Message to the Boys: "Well I met her in a bar/Like I always say/She was digging Tommy's cue(?)/Way down in FLA"
Misery (Green Day): "Virginia was a lot lizard from FLA" (song also namechecks "Mr. Whirly")

I think that "way down in F-L-A" bit may well be a nod to the classic 50's rocker "Tallahassee Lassie" by Freddy Cannon (also memorably covered by the Flamin' Groovies in the early 70's):
Well, she comes from Tallahassee She got a hi-fi chassis Maybe looks a little sassy But to me, she's real classy Yeah, my Tallahassee Lassie Down in F-L-A
