It's hard to know if Jim Croce is really on Paul's radar since I don't think he has ever covered a Croce song.. Although you might also make a case that Croce's great song "Operator" could have been a precursor to "Answering Machine.".. (another sad love song about miscommunication over the telephone)... Croce was definately a talented guy with a commercial ear.. Of course, subtract several points for having written "Bad Bad Leroy Brown." CF

If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that Id like to do Is to save every day Till eternity passes away Just to spend them with you
I'm hoping he doesn't.

I've always thought that Jim Croce had some good songs. Gordon Lightfoot too for that matter. Screw street cred I say.

I know I have seen a couple times where Paul has mentioned the Gordon Lightfoot song “If You Could Read My Mind”. Not usually a folk fan, but that song as it was recorded is one of the better (and maybe saddest) songs ever. Similar theme, but not sound, to Paul’s “Boring Enormous”

My guess it that Paul must have liked Jim Croce. I remember growing up and hearing "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" & "You don't mess around with Jim" and loving them; both are still great songs. Jim Croce was similar to Paul - he seemed down to earth, was a real singer/songwriter and didn't care for the music business. I saw a documentary about Jim Croce years ago and I think his record company or agent ripped him off. He died in a plane crash after a concert, which is really sad. He probably would have become huge if he had lived. I heard the song "Time in a bottle" was written for his son when he was born. Too bad the radio had to play the song to death, which caused most people to hate it. I remember liking that song too when I first heard it.
