But there's no hesitation on my part. Paul is one of the few artists that I eagerly await for the next release; I'm interested in what's next, what did he come up with now? Are there songs on there that will move me and make my skin tingle? This, sums it up nice. & cuz I donno how t'quote twice in one reply...

He answered with no hesitation by telling me that Paul is working on an album right now with Kevin Bowe. My fingers are crossed that this is true and that we'll hear more about it soon. This is interesting news. Cool. ... & This just got me thinking. Remember when there was talk about a covers record? Whatever happened to that? I wanna hear that.

This is interesting news. Cool. ... & This just got me thinking. Remember when there was talk about a covers record? Whatever happened to that? I wanna hear that. Sometimes, when people say "Petula Clark," it sounds like "Kevin Bowe." MAGNET: Since you’ve done that song, can we expect a Grandpaboy album of Broadway showtunes? PW: Maybe. I could do a whole thing. I did “Wonderful Copenhagen” (from the musical Hans Christian Andersen) a few years ago that ended up as, I don’t know, a Switzerland b-side or something. I don’t know, I would have to go back to the piano. I haven’t played the piano much for the past four years, and a lot of those songs are based on piano chords and don’t sound quite right with guitar. But anything’s possible. If I was to do that, I think I would choose one artist and do like a Westerberg Sings Tony Hatch kind of thing. [Laughs] MAGNET: I think we’d all look forward to hearing that. PW: Yeah. I’m sure Tony would.-- Matt Hickey's 2003 interview with PW for Magnet magazine

Succint answer to the question at hand! ;D

Sure I'll buy it. But will I like it? That's the real question. Indeed. I'll fork over my hard-earned cash, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it's any good. Don't forget, his last effort was Open Season - which I listened to exactly once - and a couple of the tracks on there were somewhat embarrassing.

This may belong on another thread, but, to my surprise, of all his "basement era" recordings, CFMT is holding up for me the best. In some strange way, Stereo (and Mono) sound like a man fighting his way through a dry spell. Dead Man Shake just sounds (for the most part) like somebody goofing off with an old blues sound. CFMT is loose and passionate, like the dry spell is truly broken. Then, Folker goes all true- confessiony and ends up somehow seeming overly self-conscious.
I never got the Open Season soundtrack.
I'll buy his next album, no doubt. Even when I don't like one of PW's initially, there always comes a space of time, sometimes multiple spaces of time, where I think that album is the greatest piece of music in my collection.

It's funny you mention that because that happens to me with some of his songs. I initially didn't care for "23 years Ago", with his dry, raspy throated singing. But I gave it some time and distance and got around to it again and really listened to it again.....and I got it. I got what he was saying about regret and how things sometimes don't ever work out for you lin life. I really like it but it's definitely for when you're in a certain mood to hear it.

Dead Man Shake just sounds (for the most part) like somebody goofing off with an old blues sound. Yes! That's been my thought all along. I haven't understood why this CD gets the praise it occasionally does. As you say, it's just...goofing around. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing glorious either.

I did the same thing with DMS that I did with Open Season - listened once and shelved it. Can't stand it. I think it's the only PW-related thing I ever bought that felt like a complete rip-off.
