Eyes Like Sparks!!
Great, great show. Very different than the nYc shows, with song selection and performance.
Opened up with Makin' Me Go.
One song encore was a bit weird, but what can you do? He gave 2 solid hours of well-played music. He really got into the guitar solos more than ny shows and was just wailing on alot of these songs.
Anyone have a complete setlist?
"Here Comes A Regular" was a religious experience on the acoustic.

I have seen PW many times, last night was top notch. If youre a fan of Pleased to meet me, last night was the show to attend.
Nevermind tore the house down.
He was focused, the band was tight, in a groove, one song right into the next, crowd in the palm of his hands, singing out loud, hell, screaming out loud, playing off the energy, great venue, memorable night.
last night he was the music.

Just kicked butt all night. I saw the second NY show as well, and Paul seemed to take over more on lead with this show, and it really kicked these songs into gear. I like the emphasis on the new material. Nothing wrong with the Replacements stuff, but his solo catalog is so good, it can really stand on its own. He knows how to put together setlists that are just about perfect, blending the two together. Sure, there's some songs I would have liked to have heard -- namly "Gun Shy" and "Folker" -- but I didn't want for anything after either Philly or NY. This band is so tight it's ridiculous. They free him up to do basically whatever he wants -- if it's lead one night, he can do that; if it's more riffing and rhythm another night, he can do that; or he mixes a little of everything in. I'd have to say "Knockin' On Mine/Mr. Rabbit" was the Philly highlight. Two great songs, but an odd combination. Still, it worked to perfection.

"Here Comes A Regular" was a religious experience on the acoustic. Here comes a regular was definately a highlight of the night. I had goosebumps standing there as he played it. Overall the show was amazing. It was only the second time I had seen paul live (the previous show was the philly tower records show), but I couldn't have asked for a better set. The mix of new and old was incredible. The fact that the majority of Pleased To Meet Me was played was also a good sign. The knockin' on mine-> Mr Rabbit was great to here. I was hoping to hear both of those songs, and the fact that if only you were lonely got thrown in the set was a nice mix. All I can really say is this was one of the best rock shows I've ever seen. Not much talking to the crowd or anything, just blasting through song after song. A longer encore would have been nice, but he had already played two hours nonstop. His shirt was soaked with sweat. Fantastic show! Something worth noting is that Boquist basically sang lead on Eyes Like Sparks as he shared the mic with Paul & PW chimed in on the chorus parts.
First time seeing him with a band since '96, and his Only Friends cooks. It amazed me to see how well they could follow his lead. Speaking of lead, Paul's guitar playing was the best I've ever seen it last night. I guess doing those solo shows in '02 prepped him well.
Michael Bland was monstrous.

Since when does ELS have a verse? Point taken, but I think you know what I mean if you use your imagination. It was cool seeing Boquist contribute like that because he was singing along (often off mic) to many PW tunes last night. I've never seen him have this much fun onstage.... not with Son Volt or even Golden Smog.

Philly...City of Westerberg love!
Very good, tight show. Westy was all business. Boquist did sing EYES LIKE SPARKS, Keith style.
If Paul was drunk, You wouldn't have known it. He was swigging water all night.
The one encore was weird because it seemed as the show was heading towards that climactic crescendo. The crowd was singing along and it just seemed like if ever he was going to go the extra, extra mile, last night would have been the night. He prefaced ALEX CHILTON with; "We're gonna do ALEX CHILTON and that's it."
Sure enough, it was. No complaints here.
After the show, we went to one of the million cool watering holes and drank for an hour and a half. Upon departing, we walked past the TLA in the pissing rain where Paul was still sitting on the bus stairs entertaining the loyalists. We didn't stop because what can you say that he hasn't already heard?
Thanks for the songs, thanks for the loyalty to us, the fans, and thanks for never becoming an embarrasment.

The only other song he played was a blues # which i'm not sure of the title ( had the line "woke up this morning....." in it) that was played between Billy Joe Shaver's "Live Forever" and "Born For Me." what I liked best about the night, besides how good he sounded and how tight the band was, is he added some songs that haven't been played this week yet. (Eyes Like Sparks with Jim also on vox, Dirty Diesel, the beginning of Beer For Breakfast, and a little harmonica on Born For Me and Hightime which was cool!!!) Paul was definitely NOT, repeat not drunk. After seeing night 1 in nyc where he seemed a bit out of it and DC the night before philly (where i think he was and was probably also pissed about going on at 11 o'clock), i can say with certainty he wasn't. He was right on, not missing lots of lyrics or chords and as always, the rest of the band accompany him perfectly. (Someone who saw the 1st half of the tour mentioned that this lineup needs to be recorded live, they couldn't be more right, THEY ROCK!) As to the one song encore, I think this was the only bummer of the night. He played the usual 32 or 33 songs he's been doing, but the crowd wanted more and considering it was sold out, they deserved it. Hell, night 2 in nyc we made so much noise, the roadies had to bring mics back out and get everything plugged in again because we wouldn't leave.

Late to the party, but I'm glad Kathy got me a set of keys to the place. Thanks!!
Saw the show Saturday and am still smiling. Unbelievable set by an incredible band. It was like a rock and steamroller, one song after another. I sure hope a recording shows up sooner or later. I was hanging by the bar on the lower level and saw that they had the show on a TV monitor. There's no way someone didn't get a video of that show, right? C'mon - where is it?!
I still don't know what the highlight for me was. Probably the fact that I went with a buddy who has loved the Mats forever, but always managed to miss them when they were around, so this was his first time seeing Paul. You think I'm smiling, you should see him. Loved all the PTMM stuff, but it was a great all around mix. Hope it's not 15 years before I see him again.

Well, it's several days after the show and I am still overwhelmed by how great it was. Kinda wished it had never ended. Michael Bland rocks and Paul's guitar work was amazing. Making Me Go sounds much better live than on the disc, Dirty Diesel and Eyes Like Sparks were real pleasant surprises.
I can't even comment about anything that he didn't play that I wished I heard. What I realized is that his catalog is sooooo loaded with great music that this show could be nothing more than awesome. Perhaps the highlight of my concert going life.
Thank you Paul for making my visit to the TLA perfect.
