Well, there are train wrecks, and then there are ones that are wrecks that involve hazardous materials. Well, maybe i'm a bit harsh, but at least now I have a good idea of what a true Replacements show back in the day may have been like. I guess after a gem in New Orleans and night 2 in NYC, the bar will always be set high. Here's a rough setlist (with one song missing since I can't read my own scribble, duhhhh!)

I called NYC night 2 right and had a "feeling" about tonite since it was a late start. Now if i'd only bet money, i'd have enough to buy Trump's buildings and have him thrown out of them! Now, what do I bet on for Philly tomorrow!?!?!

With that encore I don't know how you can be disappointed. Sorry to hear you didn't like it much. Sounds like a great show. Though I agree NYC2 will be hard to top.

The missing song is Achin' To Be. Also, there was a bit of Dirty Diesel which segued into If I Had A Hammer.

He also started the opening chords to I Will Dare but stopped when Kevin couldn't make the guitar switch in time. By the time everything was ready he lost interest and started Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.

Another fragmentary song played in DC that has not been mentioned yet is "Do Right In Your Eyes." It was very hushed, and I'm pretty sure there was only one verse -- the one that goes "you're always trying to bring me down to your level/I'd like to lay you out with a shovel."

In the set list, it followed "Born for Me," continuing in the murderous vein of that song's revamped ending:
"He was born for me... You'll never take him away, or I'll put you in a f*cking grave."

You have a good memory, Caroline. I couldn't remember what it was he said, so I copied the quote above verbatim from a post in the other thread on the DC show. But it didn't sound quite right to me, and your version definitely rings a bell.

I wondered if Paul, realizing how harsh that new final line of "Born for Me" might've sounded (especially in tandem with the earlier nasty comment about his wife in the same song), decided to use that snippet of "Do Right In Your Eyes" to remind us of the old blues tradition of songs about killing your woman. Perhaps a musical way of saying that the nasty in-song commentary is just "professional wrestling."

(If that last bit makes no sense to some: "professional wrestling" is how Paul retroactively described his statement that he wanted to kick Ryan Adams' teeth down his throat; i.e. just a bit of rock-n-roll theatrics, with no deep-seated malicious intent.)

Actually, the acoustic numbers with the band and the encores were one of the highlights. The encores kind of moved a show that had been teetering on the edge back away from the cliff. My seeming a bit bummed was on 2 accounts: 1) I've seen him at his best other nights, so I know he can do better and 2) i went with 2 friends who haven't seen him since 'Mats days and for the previous 3 weeks all I did was hype things up and I feel they needed to see more than just this night to truely appreciate him live.
