This performance was absolutely astounding. It blew night 1 completely out of the water. Paul established momentum, and never let the crowd die down. He got a few covers out of the way at the right time.
I'll like to expound on this, but I can't right now. I'm too tired and have a take-home final exam to crank out!

I thought the show was great as well, but said to a friend that I thought some of the songs were done at 3/4 speed or effort. Like the classic Westerberg maxim "never give 100%". The show I saw in Mephis seemed more errrr...immediate/crucial. That said, I thought the band was tight and PW was enjoying himself.
Amazing how he can take covers like "Different Drum" , "Bortal Breakout" and "If I Had a Hammer" and make them his own.
The ringing/chiming guitar on Left of the Dial was a highlight.
After seeing him for some 21 years now, it strikes me that Paul is a prickly, dark f*cker. Did you all catch the 'this is the last time you'll see me' comment as he left the stage after "Can't Hardly Wait"...?

It was a great show tonight at the Supper Club. I thought the best songs were "How can you like him?" and "Born for me"-Paul sang with such a passion. My mind is pretty blank right now, but "Different Drum" was a good choice and it was nice to hear "Merry go round" & "Someone take the wheel". I felt sad afterwards because I got there late and then I missed meeting Paul afterwards. but I did get to meet a lot of nice fans anyway. For some reason I wanted to tell Paul that the song "My Dad" really got to me, the end of the song almost made me cry the first time I heard it. I wish Paul would do another show in NYC, I don't want to have to wait a few more years before he comes back again!

This show was absolutely fucking awesome. Blew every PW show I have seen in the past year right out of the water. The best night if music I have seen in just about forever.
What a great crowd too, I was upstairs tonight and had as much fun watching the crowd as I did watching the band. The band was offstage and upstairs after the first encore and it seemed like the show was over, but the crowd would have torn the place down if they didn't come back, so come back they did for Alex CHilton.
Just awesome...such a great night.

I'm usually just a lurker on this board, but I needed to agree with everyone here about NYC night 2. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with night 1. I knew afterwards that it was the closest I'll probably ever get to experiencing the infamous drunk Mats gigs that I never witnessed first hand, but last night kicked that first night's ASS.
My favorite moment was when the band rotated instruments before they came back in on the end of Can't Hardly Wait. I liked it how it seem to take some convinving by P Dubs to get the bassist to take center stage and sing lead, but once he did, the place went crazy.
Note that he made another comment about not being back during the last line of Left of the Dial (end of the FIRST encore)by earnestly speaking "If I don't see you...ever again..." Let's hope he was just kidding, right?

I won't attempt to get this in the right order, but here are all the tunes played last night (I think - feel free to correct me). Nice mix - 15 solo, 10 Mats (6 from PTMM!), and 6 covers: Dust My Broom (Elmore James) Different Drum (Mike Nesmith) Borstal Breakout (Sham 69) Live Forever (Billy Joe Shaver) Don’t Cry No Tears (Neil Young) If I Had a Hammer (Pete Seeger) Knockin’ on Mine Things Love Untold AAA High Time IOU Alex Chilton Nevermind Valentine Skyway Can’t Hardly Wait Achin’ to Be Merry Go Round Someone Take the Wheel Born for Me No Place for You Let the Bad Times Roll Making Me Go What a Day for a Night Crackle & Drag Lookin’ Up in Heaven Anyway’s All Right As Far As I Know How Can You Like Him? I Will Dare

Like everybody else here, Night 2 really was perfect. Probably my favorite Paul show I've seen, and one of the tops I've ever seen by anyone. Paul and the band were perfect, totally on. It made for the perfect Paul combo here in NYC: night 1 is messy, 'mats-esque Paul, night 2 is the genius. Best of both worlds.
Highlights included:
- That unbelievable take on AAA with the bridge from Anyway's All Right
- A complete I Will Dare is special enough, but then that punked out last third of it was amazing
-Blistering versions of Making Me Go, As Far As I Know (Michael pounds those drums like nobody's business), IOU, Left of the Dial
-An aching, amazing version of How Can You Like Him?
-Another good batch of covers: If I Had a Hammer, Live Forever, Different Drum, Borstal Breakout, and two towards the very top of the show that I didn't recognize
-joking momentary attempts at both Down by the River (threatened to be "25-minutes long") and Freebird (despite Kevin's rightful protests)
- Paul asking for requests, and then offering funny, matter of fact responses ("I heard The Ledge. We don't know that." or "I heard three Replacements songs: Bastards of Young, Bastards of Young and (mimics crowd screaming)")
- Paul's impromptu version of Things, complete with singng "abreviation point" when he jumped to the end of the song, and then partially improvised one more verse
-the changing of the instruments during the Can't Hardly Wait break (great job with the vocals Jim)
-most of all, Paul and the band returning after the mic's were already taken down to perform Alex Chilton
Seriously, a just absolutle stellar show. Thanks guys!
Also, pleased to finally meet you Kathy! You rule, and hope the squirrel bite heals.

Aaah, Left of the Dial! How could I forget that one! Re: Bastards of Young. When someone yelled for it Pauls' reponse was "There are some songs that belong to the Replacements - Bastards of Young, Bastards of Young, and...the rest of 'em". I took this to mean he'll never play BOY as a solo artist. And I don't think he ever has?

Thanks for the setlist SalC! The only song I think you're missing is Stain Yer Blood. And, if you want, the first line of Meet Me Down the Alley.

Thanks for answering what Paul said regarding BOY. I couldn't quite make it out. I think Paul played Bastards in NYC in 2002, but that could be my memory playing tricks on me.
Also, trying to figure out another quote from last night, at the end of Left of the Dial (and encore 1) did Paul say "Goodbye forever" or "I'll be here forever" or something else entirely? I know I heard forever, but the first part I didn't quite catch.

Night 2 was excellent...
Making me Go, I will dare, & nevermind being my 3 favs for the evening... alot of really cool folks at this gig as opposed to night 1... (see gravy's night one recap) MR.B really plays the hell out of those drums... & bit of lefthanded bass I see......
much love to FAF,RANKEL, & underneathagreathorse, (we gotta shorten that somehow babe....) They were right up front from note 1 unitl the end rockin out & keeping the front of the stage pumping with energy, I did it on the 93 & 96 tours, so I felt like i was passing the torch to the 20 somethings! I was in the middle...
I fear that this is Paul's last time out on the road... during Left of Dial when he spoke, not sang "and if I don't see any of you guys, well, ever again..." It really kinda reaffirmed this feeling.... When it was over, i had to wipe a tear from eye.... but what a way to say goodbye, if that was in fact his Swan Song in new York.....

Ya know, I heard Paul's little improv in LotD about not seeing us ever again, but I think he was just being dramatic. The tour is winding down and he is probably anxious to get home. And he does have a flair for drama. I seriously doubt he never intends to tour again. Didn't he just give an interview where he says he suspects that playing live may just be his favorite thing to do? I know I read that somewhere recently. In fact, I could have sworn I heard him mumble "see ya next time" as he ran from the stage after "Alex Chilton". Anyone else hear it?

That's three nights in a row he said something like that ... at end of Boston Show he said "We'll never play here again -- thanks to everyone for 30 years of mayhem." Not sure that's the exact quote, but it's the flavor.

All I can really say is WOW. That was such an amazing show. It has to be the best one I've seen. The reaction from the crowd after the first encore was so moving. They were yelling their hearts out. And we definitely got some people rocking up front.
Before the show one of the guys working security said that Paul Westerguard was really loud and he was hearing the music in his head all night. Then he asked the guys behind us in line how they can just stand there with that music going on. I freaked out and said I've been arguing about that since November. The security guard who couldn't remember Pauls name thought people should have been dancing more.
The set they played last night was sooooo good. When he asked for requests while he had his acoustic out I yelled for Things and he did it. He needed help with some lyrics of course but it was still pretty great. After the Packed My Things Today line he said "do you think she wants me to come back?" and just gave the head nod no. Kind of sad.
Because I had heard Alex Chilton the night before and the show was so rockin I told UnderneathABigHorse that I would give that song up to hear IOU because that always blows me away live. He came out started singing Nevermind and I almost lost it. First time I'd seen that since Pantages and then he flew into IOU I'm telling you I was in heaven. Left of the dial, always always great. But the crowd got me so pumped when they got him to come out again, I rocked out to Alex Chilton so hard that it was like it was my first time hearing it live. It was just that damn great.
After the show we were waiting around to see if he'd do a meet and greet and two girls came out that had been at the after show and they spotted us and gave us our passes and told us how great they thought it was that we were so into it. They said we deserved to be back there, of course the security guy didn't agree with that but it was a really gesture.

So after the break of Can't Hardly Wait, who played drums? Paul? I hope it was Paul.
I REALLY hope this one got recorded. If it never surfaces I'm gonna be a sad little boy.
