Alright. Not enough chatter about the motown show and any planned pre-concert festivities.
Early show - 6:30 on a Friday evening. Puts some serious limits on any big pre-show plans. I like it, though - it'll be a nice excuse to leave work a little extra early for a couple of bevvies.
It's been a while since I hung out in that area of downtown. Where to meet? Jacoby's on Brush?

I haven't been to St. Andrews in a couple years at least. It's an hour and 15 from my house to SA's in light traffic so we might head down early to avoid the traffic but just don't have a set plan yet. When we go to the Majestic/Magic Stick we usually eat/drink at that restaurant across the street (can't even remember what it's called) but have never had a plan for St. Andrews. Hmmmm...

Jacoby's on Brush? 6:30 doors, so probably 8:00/ :15 showtime. I had been planning on doing the Covington, Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit leg, but I just bought a house, closing at the end of the month... so no trip for me. I grew up in the Detroit area (many nights at St. Andrews) and was going to suggest the Post bar. It's been six years since I've been east of the Mississippi and I see that it has turned in to a chain, so no comment. Here's a link I found, that might help www.motorcityrocks.com/stan.htmI haven't seen a lot of Det. people here on the board, so I call on you to Represent Detroit! (i saw the portland show... amazing.)

Us Detroit Folk are out here! PW's Detroit shows usually do well ticketwise, so I'm sure people are just not hip to this thread yet.
As far as a place to hang before the gig, when I go to St. Andrews I usually hit Nikki's pizza. It is located just north of the club. Just head towards the Greektown casino. Only a one block walk, decent pizza and cold beer.

Oh yea, .... the Detroit Hard Rock Cafe is about a 10 minute walk from St. Andrews. It's small but very cool and in a safe area.

I've heard good things about the place and keep meaning to check it out - but not that night! I completely forgot about The Post that cottonwood mentioned. Cool place, at least it used to be. That's only about a 10min walk from St. Andrews, too... I think that's my leading contender right now.

I completely forgot about The Post that cottonwood mentioned. Cool place, at least it used to be. Brain fart. Just realized that my fond memories of the Post were in fact fond memories of the Town Pump. I really do need to get more sleep. unfortunately, the town pump is definitely not within walking distance to St. Andrews. hmm.

The Post bar has been a bit quiet because of no hockey season. Yes, it is a hike from St Andrews hall. Two good pizza and beer joints around the corner from the venue are Nikki's and Pizza Populous. Or Jacoby's which has food and is just a half block east then north of the club.

i might suggest jacoby's as a post show hangout... as most of you are probably aware, the westy show is a part of the motor city music conference (our attempt at a sxsw), so there's a ton of other shows going on that night. another show that might interest 'mats types would be the show around the corner at jacoby's. Great Lakes Myth Society (1am) Loretta Lucas (12am) Porchsleeper (11pm) Molly Jean (10pm) Tenley (9pm) i for one will be heading up to jacoby's right after paul's last encore -- mostly because i'm in the band that plays at 11 -- but the whole line up is worth your while. oh, and they have beer there too. www.greatlakesmythsociety.comwww.porchsleeper.comwww.tenleyband.comwww.motorcitymusic.comwww.motorcityrocks.comAlright. I think I might just do that - head over to Jacoby's - after the show.
Also FYI - I called St. Andrews about the start time, since I've heard/read various things ranging from 5:30 - 8pm. They confirmed that it is indeed a 6:30 show (well, doors open at 6:30), but said that the band will have to be off the stage no later than 9:30pm, due to their weekly Friday night dance party thingamajig. That's why it's a relatively early show.
Should still be a good time. I'm thrilled about the Stain yer Blood and Gun Shy reports/rumors from Milwaukee...

I only just heard about this the other day, I had no idea. I wonder if that means parking will be a nightmare? Well, I guess I've been down there when there was a Tiger game, a show at the Fox, and a show at the State Theatre all at the same time and found a parking spot without too much trouble so I don't know what I'm fretting about. And I thought it was a 6:00 show so thanks for posting the correct time ih8music! And good to know that they've got to be off my 9:30, that means they should be on by 7:30. I hate getting to a show when the doors open and standing around for 2 hours before even the opening band comes on.

So, I see Detroit's sold out (thanks Kathy). I mentioned it to my husband who made a face I can't describe. He brought up that Music Conference and said there are probably going to be a ton of 'suits' in the audience, yapping on their phones the whole night. I refuse to believe it and he says I'm living in denial. So, is this the first year for the Music Conference, does anybody know? And if not, are there normally packs of suits running around ruining shows? Do I need to bring my pickax to take out anyone around me who decides to yap the whole time? Also, has anyone been to St. Andrews lately with a camera? I want to bring mine but I have vague memories of being patted down by security looking for pickaxes and cameras. I'm wondering how well I'm going to have to hide it, if at all. Perhaps it depends on the artist. I would suspect PW doesn't mind cameras. Boy I'm chatty this morning.

this is, indeed, the first year for the MC2. they're trying to emulate sxsw and cmj, and although i'm sure the organizers would love to have greektown teaming with weasels in suits on their sell phones, falling all over themselves to sign every crappy band they hear - i highly doubt that will be the case. i'm just hoping to get enough people to our show so as we're not playing to the bartender and the other bands. i don't think parking should be too much of a problem at 6 or so. and as for cameras, i haven't been to st. andrews in a couple of years either but i'd be surprised if it'd be a problem...none of the other venues downtown care. i'm going to do my best to tape it. /brian So, I see Detroit's sold out (thanks Kathy). i'm going to do my best to tape it. Please do (and share)! I would try, but I know that I just can't be trusted to not scream like an idiot during the show and ruin the recording. ;-) I will try to bring in a camera so hopefully i'll also have a few pics to share. As for pre-show location - looks like it'll be the Loco Bar (on Lafayette just outside of Greektown) for me. My concert companion is insisting on mexican food & beer... and i'm happy to oblige. And melrose_cowboy, after checking out Porchsleeper's bio and some of your mp3's - I think i'll definitely stick around to catch your set. sounds pretty good!

""as most of you are probably aware, the westy show is a part of the motor city music conference (our attempt at a sxsw), .........."
Good luck, nothing comes close to sxsw. Went to Portland's feeble attempt (nxnw) which was boring enormous (am still yawning). Maybe the Motown will fare better, but I doubt it. (Watch out for exploding muslims)........SXSW has actually declined this century, it was supreme during the '90's.
Anyway, have fun at the show. Obviously PW is the highlight/keynote artist. His appearance may actually kick start a great tradition. Heaven knows this nation needs more great live music towns like Austin/Memphis. If you get to meet Paul, have something inspiring to say to him. I kick myself for being drunk & tongue-tied when I met him, but I got a great picture from the meeting, and he is an excellent, funny, yet strangely sad human being.

"Heaven knows this nation needs more great live music towns like Austin/Memphis."
I think Detroit may already know just a little something about being a great live music town. Ever heard of the white stripes or eminem or techno or mowtown or Don Was or George Clinton and dont forget the Nuge Dude. For christ's sake the name of this thread is "Detroit Rock City"!
Just kidding, I know that we get forgotten all the time up hear in rust belt hell. I'm just glad that Paul didn't forget us!
I've heard that anyone with a pass for the music conference can get into the Paul show tonight. Has any one else heard that? What's gunna happen when people with tickets can't get in because the conference people have already packed the place?

I've heard that anyone with a pass for the music conference can get into the Paul show tonight. Has any one else heard that? What's gunna happen when people with tickets can't get in because the conference people have already packed the place? from: www.freep.com/entertainment/music/mcgetin22e_20050422.htm"The platinum badges and wristbands provide access to every music showcase -- more than 600 events at 50-plus venues. That includes the handful of headliner acts -- Snoop Dogg, Moby, Paul Westerberg -- that are part of MC2. But there is a caveat: For these shows, a percentage of the house (half is a ballpark figure) has been reserved for those buying badges and wristbands. The rest is pegged for people with tickets to those specific events. A patron holding a specific ticket is guaranteed admission, while the MC2 admissions work on a first-come, first-served basis after that." So those of us with tickets are ok. This probably also explains the sold-out/not-sold-out status of the show. they're probably throttling the ticket supply depending on how the MC2 badge sales go.
