Okay, so if it wouldn't be HopLeaf, we need:
a place somewhat near the Riv (at least makes getting to the Riv easy)
an all ages place
a place with vegetarian options
a place that serves up beer/wine/liquor with the meal
a place that is relatively "tame" in that everyone will be able to find something to eat - not too spicy, not too exotic
moderately priced
These are the guidelines that FAF, jodi, and I tried to keep in mind.
Somebody offer something up, I swear I am getting hives.
Regards, EM (who is not planning Chicago anymore) (really)

Does anyone know the name of the neighborhood that the Riv is in? Or any neighborhoods you might pass through on the el on the way to the Riv?

Duh. I suppose some info might help. Chicago Lodge is a mile away - main drags between Lodge and the Riv are: W. Foster, N. Sheridan, W. Lawrence, and one other street that Yahoo maps refuses to name. As far as I know a nearby neighborhood is Andersonville, although the Riv may be located "Uptown". Most advice we have received so far has said to avoid eating near the Riv except for going to the Green Mill bar across the street. The address of the Riv is 4746 N. Racine. I think it is the Lawrence stop on the El. FAF may have info back further in this thread. I do not have info on the color line. Hope this helps. Regards, EM (who is so seriously not Chicago planning anymore, I cannot even begin to tell you, I swear)

Does anyone know the name of the neighborhood that the Riv is in? Or any neighborhoods you might pass through on the el on the way to the Riv? Here again is the link for the El that you click on stops and see whats around for restaurants and bars. Make sure you select Red Line. The Hotel is on the Sheridan stop and the Riv is on the Lawrence. centerstage.net/virtual-el/howard-danryan/A contact of EM's suggested the Goose Island Brewery which is a place I've been to before. He said its all ages because they serve food and its a nice place. Plus there's a ton of bars around it on Clark st. So we could bar hop for a bit and go to the theatre. Anyone driving could drive to the Clark St area, find some street parking (there is free parking in the area) and ride the El with us to the show. I was thinking then after the show we could either do the Green Mill after ward or any place on the the El stops. Here's a menu at the Goose Island. I think it should work for all types as they seem to have soup and salads. www.gooseisland.com/pubs/wrigleyville_menu.aspHe also suggested a place called Cal's which could be a fun stop on the way or after. In the Clark St area there's quite a few bars open til 4 so the options are pretty good. Here's a link to the Cal's Bar site: www.drinkatcalsbar.com/Edit: Here's a link to all the bars and restaurants in the Clark St area: centerstage.net/virtual-el/howard-danryan/clark-division.html

this goose island place looks to be ok.... it has a lot of choices, so that is good. i like the idea too of everyone meeting somewhere where there is street parking, and then all taking the el to the show.

Finally, a place I have actually eaten at Goose Island is a great place - good food and beer. It is close to Wrigley Field but luckily the Cubs are out of town that day so parking might not be too bad.

Now the whole issue of times and such.

Yes, someone please tell us how long it would take to get from Chicago Lodge to this Goose place (since that is where teh majority of us are staying) and how long it takes to get from the Goose place to the Paul place.
Then times will be set.
FAF, offer up any hopping bars you are interested in, please.

just under 3 miles from Chicago Lodge to Goose Island...then just under 2 miles from Goose Island to the Riv. I made a map! the squiggly red line is my approximation of where the red line train runs.

The El near the bar is only three stops from that of the Rivieria so I'm thinking if we plan about 10 minutes of travel time to get there that should be good. And I believe its going to be close to that for the hotel to the bars. There's quite a few bars in that area. I remember Sluggers having cheap shots of Jag and pretty good priced drinks. I've heard good things about Charlie's and I've been to the other Barleycorns in downtown. We'll be able to decide where to hop to when we get there because they're mostly on the same block.

Ok the show is at 9 and doors open at 7:30. What is everyone's thoughts for getting early to get close? Should we plan an earlier dinner in that event?

For what it's worth, I think meeting for food and then taking the train to the Riv is a good idea. Save the bar hopping for after. I would like to get there reasonably early to be somewhat close. I saw Paul there in 93, was a little late and was relegated to the balcony because of the crowd. I'm sorry I'm not much help with any planning but my business has my brain spinning these days. Count me in for the Goose at 5:30-6:00.
