WESTERBERG HANGOVER
The tally from Paul Westerberg's final show at the Pantages Theatre on Sunday: two smashed guitars, six or seven botched cover songs, and probably one of the most Replacements-like shows the guy has played in 14, 15 years.
The night actually started out rather stiff but did a 180 when Paul grabbed his microphone stand and climbed down into the front row to sing "I Will Dare,"I.O.U.,"Nevermind" and other oldies. By sheer luck, Magnolias drummer Tom Cook -- who was called out of the crowd to play tambourine on "I Will Dare" at the first Guthrie show in 2002 -- did the same Sunday.
Word was that Westerberg enjoyed the shows enough to "consider" taking the band on the road. How else would he pay for a couple new guitars?
