I understand the tendency for 'Mats songs to get the biggest audience response at PW concerts, it's perfectly natural (if slightly frustrating). But dudes, I'm just gonna come out and say it, AAA, High Time, Makin' Me Go, Waiting For Somebody, and a lot of the other solo stuff just destroyed at these shows and were every bit as great as Left of the Dial and Can't Hardly Wait and the other Mats' classics.
Obvious points perhaps but I just needed to get that out there.

you know, i sort of wished there had been MORE solo stuff. while i love the old 'mats stuff with all my heart, i'd have traded some of them to hear Kickin' the Stall, Wild & Lethal, and Eyes Like Sparks (or Be Bad for Me).

I thought the solo stuff really came alive with a full band, particularly "AAA", "Folk Star", "Making Me Go" and "As Far As I Know".

It was great to hear some of these more recent songs with a real band. Having Michael on drums kicked ass. I love Paul, but c'mon, he's not exactly the greatest drummer out there.

Exactly. Just more proof that we need a special section reserved up front for us at all Paul shows. If not only to lead the crowd.
I would've killed to hear "Everything Goes Wrong" or "Lookin Out Forever". Ooh, or "Vampires and Failures", complete with shaver solo. Or "Lush and Green" without audience commentary running throughout.

"Lush and Green" without audience commentary running throughout. Lushes go Pee: Those color commentators shouldve joined the rest of the men at the restroom.

Lushes go Pee: Those color commentators shouldve joined the rest of the men at the restroom. lush & green is a beautiful song. people should learn to "hold it".

Will he ever play the "original" version of Crackle and Drag? Would the crowd lose it if he did? Yes.

Hey, I don't want to offend anyone, but Paul IS NOT The Replacements anymore. He's PW, and that should be that. When you've been out of a band as long as he has I think fans should understand that all that stuff is behind him. And that now he wants to be Paul Westerberg, not the Mats.
I'm sure he would rather play his solo stuff, but my guess is that he's being nice enough to play the Mats songs for the fans. And for those fans, like they did in one show, to get up and go to the bathroom during Lush and Green is just very disrespectful. Paul goes out of the way to play the older songs for you and then you do that? Or start out yelling like monkeys for Mats songs? Sorry, I know that those Mats songs are great, and I love them too, but I think Paul would like to perform his own solo stuff.
I still don't know why he doesn't just go to a show and only perform his solo career stuff. I for one would love that--a dream come true. I can only think he plays the Mats songs for the fans...

Well I'm definitely in agreement. The one thing that really pissed me off about Sunday was the crowd involvement. Everyone on the main floor was seated for way too long. After the third song I stood up on the left side and made my way toward the stage. I couldn't stand for sitting during his shows.
I wanted to make sure he knew how much the fans loved the show and want to make him want to play more often. I don't feel sitting shows this. Especially since he came out on Sunday in such a playful, energetic way and I thought the crowd should have played off that. But nope they didn't, at least I did my part.
But I do also agree that he doesn't need to play the Mats songs either. Being that I'm too young to have ever seen the Mats play (I'm hillbilly's age and I know I don't need to reiterate that) I know this was possibly my only chance to see a Mats song played and have it be even close to the sound of it in their early days. But I really hated the fact that there were probably quite a few people there to see just the Mats songs.
Ok this is a ramble but I'm going to close with one more complaint. I agree that there should be a section reserved for the fans like people on this message board. I felt that I saw far too many people that were there just so they could say they were. They obviously didn't care or they wouldn't have talked through the whole performance. When I was at the front of the stage, even during Here Comes A Regular there was a woman talking the whole time and trying to get peoples attention. Shut up and appreciate the music. That song and that performance as a whole brought tears to my eyes and I can't stand that there were people there taking away from that experience.

I still don't know why he doesn't just go to a show and only perform his solo career stuff. I for one would love that--a dream come true. I can only think he plays the Mats songs for the fans... He wrote the Mats songs too though -- I don't think he hates playing Little Mascara because it's a Mats song and not a solo song...I don't know that for sure, but I don't think so. If you were going to play crowd-pleasing Mats fans songs, I don't know that "IOU" would be top of the list either...that seemed like it was chosen for the enjoyment of kicking ass on it, rather than to placate older fans. Listen, I could die happy if I never heard "Achin to Be" again, but not because it's a Mats song, because of the 120+ songs PW has written (band and solo), it's just not in my top 30. But I also (sorry everyone) don't ever need to hear "Bad Times Roll Again" -- not a band/solo thing, just personal preference. I don't tend to think of a Mats song or a solo song when I think of what I want hear. I could be wrong but I just don't think a lot of people went to the shows to see a trip down Memory Lane. Paul could be playing the Catskills when he's 80 and some other 80 year old dude in the crowd is *always" gonna yell out "Customer". That's just a given. Sure there were a good number of fans there who were way more familiar with the older stuff but I think the new stuff got a real good reception too and that lots more from S/M could have been added. And maybe will be if more dates happen (fingers crossed).

Nature does call, nothing you can do about that. I love lush & Green & wouldn't but if it was Silver Naked ladies or Psychpharacology, I'm sorry but I'm hitting the head!
In 96 my friend had a little too much to drink(f'ing hammered) & he went to the bathroom & Paul played "if only you were lonely" which he had neverheard live before. He stumbled back & muttered "what did I miss?" to which i replied "nothing!" to avoid an alcohol induced tantrum"
Once we got outside I asked him how he enjoyed the show, it was my birthday present to him, & his first PW show. He said , "It couln't have been better!" I then told him what song he missed while draing the vain & then came the screaming, drooling & general whinning........ God that was fun!!!!
Be careful when you pee! Just hold it & pee in Scooter's car!

i totally think its a tri down memory lane for ALOT of people ther. not eveyrone, and probably not people on this board. but prrof of it lie sint e fact people ONLY stood up for mat's song...proves that i believe.
kickass shows. mats, solo..whatever.
but for mep erosnally, solo took the cake. i actually went and pissed during little mascara (which really is my favorite song) i did it out of protest to those who only stood up during mats songs...i went and pissed during it...then rocked out to solo stuff even harder.

I would have liked to see Everything Goes Wrong my self. I wanted to ask him when it would make it onto an album when I met him after the Saturday show, but he seemed pretty tired and I thought I had already asked for enough.
