One one of these threads someone wrote something to the effect that around 14 Songs PW decided to stop using all those strange and wonderful chords and simplify ...
Was that a joke that I was too dense to get, or did he really talk about a new songwriting strategy?

Yeah, I was the one who mentioned that in another thread. It wasn't a joke. He's said it in more than a couple interviews around the time of 14 Songs and then later during promotion for Eventually. I remember him discussing "Love Untold" and he talked about how he felt it was more difficult to write a simple three-chord song than it was to write something like "Swingin' Party." I'm not sure I buy that theory, but it explains all the three-chord (sometimes two-chord!) songs he's done since he's gone solo. Something tells me it has more to do with his self-diagnosed ADD than anything else though.

Probably right about the ADD there --- no one else around to help remember the stray chord. I wouldn't belittle the unpretentious two or three chord song, but if I had to match "Love Untold" against "Swingin Party" the latter would win every time. Sometimes those basic songs rock, and other times they just keep repeating themselves.
