MAKING ME GO

I tried figuring this one out awhile ago, and completely forgot to post it. I thought I’d throw my version into the mix.

Like Wolfdog, I originally tired Open G tuning, but found I couldn’t get some of those ringing notes in the song. My closest approximation of the tuning—from low to high—is a variation on the Open G tuning: C, G, C, G, B, D (capo at 2nd fret). If you're using an electric guitar, and don't want to use a capo, tune to D, A, D, A, C#, E.

dont have my guitar in front of me...but will in awhile...

i will just add...if this helps your case at all...

it was def in an open tuning, no capo though...watching paul play it this weekend....

probably doesnt matter though...

i love this song though.

I was at a couple of the shows, but I never thought to look how he was playing it. If he had no capo on, he might have tuned the guitar up to (D, A, D, A, C#, E). I was playing this on acoustic, so to save my neck, I didn't want to tune the G, and B strings any higher than I needed to. On a electric you can get away with that tuning though.


I just tried this on my electric with the (D, A, D, A, C#, E) tuning. This seems to work out good, if you don't want to use the capo. The good thing is, this doesn't change the numbers on the TAB at all.


This also seems to be the same tuning he uses in "Answering Machine" (except with a capo, and the low E-string tuned to E instead of D). I tabbed out Answering Machine ages ago, but it seems to be gone from the board now.

I didn't pay attention all that much either, but I believe he rarely used a capo on electric. That would lead me to believe that most are in open G and open A (or at least his variations of them). Pretty sure Alex Chilton is in open A, and Can't Hardly Wait is in open G.

I like your variation on the tuning...sounds good. Just difficult training my brain and fingers to find those C tuned strings.

Sort of off topic, but which open tuning do you think Paul uses most? Open G? Also, I read somewhere that he likes Joni Mitchell and so I thought that maybe he was using some of her odd tunings.

I did some research and found that Joni has a ridiculous bunch of open tunings she has used over the years. So if Paul is using one of her tunings, I'll never have enough time to figure out which one.

And Gtrplyr, it sounds real close. good job. it somehow seems as if there's some passing tone that isn't in there, but hell, it's far closer than anyting I could come up with. nice work.

Excellent work, GtrPlyr. Felt like a revelation here. I played around with it some more while listening to that "Morning Becomes Eclectic" broadcast from 2002.

Seems like he's playing in that same tuning for "No Place for You," "We May Be the Ones" and "Let the Bad Times Roll" (although I couldn't quite suss out all the details).

On the "Live w/ Jools Holland" video of "It's a Wonderful Lie," I think he's playing in that tuning, sans capo, and with the low-E tuned up to D. Very pretty tuning.

I was just messing around and here's my take on the song.

It's my belief that this song is being played in standard tuning. I hear two very distinct guitar parts being played over each other.

Here's how I feel the main riff is being played.
