Im having an open G fest, and I think I found the main part of this. One day while playing Moving Trucks by Bob Mould, I fumbled my way through a very "AAA" sounding riff..
Open tuning, capo on the 3rd fret, then play Paul's version of "E", like a regular open E but with pinky on the 4th fret of the G string. Play an E, and a B, and an A in this manner, with the little inflections coming from fiddling with the the high E string. The rest unfolds from there..
Apologies for my lacking in actual technical guitar-playing information.

ok...standard tuning...
G - D - C - D for the all i know part, with a little lick either on the g string at 2-4-2-0 or on the D string at 7-9-7-5
...and then on the verses... C - Em - D....try the Em in a higher voicing, like sliding an open Dm up 2 frets...or just use barre chords at 3,5, and 7.
