I still like "When It Began" too.

Still not buying what you guys are selling. Gtr, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you don't find "Sadly Beautiful" the least bit pretentious? Depressingly pretentious? Mock depressingly pretentious?

I truly find it to be a beautiful, and melancholic song, without being too maudlin. I know where you are coming from though. This album took alot longer to hit me, than Let it Be or Tim. It will never hold the same place in my heart as those records, but the longer I've lived with ASD, the more its treasures have slowly revealed themselves... How's that for pretentious?

I'm voting pre on the strength of Hootenanny. While ASD may not be Pauls' finest hour, it is still better than 99% of the crap out there.

Hootenanny tips the balance for me too. You can hear the potential in it, the band starting to burst at the seams with possibilities (kinda like Rubber Soul). Post-trinity, you hear the sounds of consolidation: some great songs on their way to PW's solo career.
I like Reggie's comment that "Inherit the Earth" is a poor man's "Bastards." Produced any which way, "Inherit" tops some others in that vein for me, such as "We May Be the Ones."

post... definitely... although I like the early 'Mats records for their spirit and energy, tryin' to compare the quality of the contents of the SONGS on those records to the ones on ASD or DTAS is ludicrous... it's like comparing a child to a man... that's one of the great things about the length of the 'Mats career - we got to see Paul mature into a GREAT songwriter, and the other guys evolve into tasteful players... (it always bugs me when people want to say that they are into someones "earlier" work, because they were hip and cool enough to know about them before anyone else caught on) now, to set the record on a couple of other things: "Achin' To Be" and "When It Began" are two songs that are about the closest thing that you could call perfect in the 'Mats catalogue... "Sadly Beautiful" is just that... (f*ckin' great) " Darling One" off of DTAS is one of my alltime favorite songs, and is so achingly beautiful and poetic in nature... elegantmule, "if you say nothing, then that's something I'll understand..."

I've always been a DTAS fan though agree that it's not as good as the trinity. But Talent Show is solid and I'll Be You is still one of my top 10 favorite Mats songs. Achin to Be is a sadly beautiful tune. It is a record with too much gloss and is all over the board but I like the helter skelter feel of it. Many different sounds and styles that still all sound like the Mats - I Won't rocks, Asking Me Lines has a funky guitar sound, RnR Ghost, She's Blind, Darling One are more introspective while Talent and I'll Be You are pop-y. Still a great listen for me.
All Shook Down took awhile for me but eventually sunk in. A record for when I am in the mood to be mellow but still tap my toes and sing along.

I gotta go W/Pre-
Yes, ASD is one of my favorite records EVER, but DTS has never been a favorite. While I've always liked Talent Show, Achin' to Be, I'll Be You, Darling One & Rockin Roll Ghost, the slick & polished production kinda of ruins the rest of the album for me.
On the other had, Sorry Ma...was my skeleton key. That album opened the door to another world of music. W/age the albums speaks less directly to me than it once did, but it's still a great listen. Perfect on a warm, sunny road trip or during a summer BBQ bash.
Stink, I could take or leave. While Great for what it is, I can't honestly remember the last time I gave it a spin.
W/out a doubt Hoot..is as great a Mats record as any. The potential is undeniable. Besides, Color Me..., Take Me Down..., Within Your Reach & Treatment Bound are big reasons I'm a fan in the first place.

DTAS was pushing it, but ASD was the nail in the Mats coffin for me. It's funny how I feel exactly the opposite. I've been listening to them both this week and I am convinced that any record that ends with 2 songs as awful as Rock'n'Roll Ghost and Darlin One and features Back to Back in the first half cannot be loved as a whole. You can hate the performance on ASD, but don't be hatin' the songs, because there are better songs on ASD.

Gtr, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you don't find "Sadly Beautiful" the least bit pretentious? Depressingly pretentious? Mock depressingly pretentious? Well, he said that he originally wrote it for Marianne Faithful to sing, so maybe that was intentional. I'm shocked by the number of ASD haters though. Maybe it was because it was the first Mats album I heard, but I still love that album to death. It has a bunch of songs I always thought were very underrated like Happy Town, Torture, Bent Out Of Shape.

And, to reverse that thought, I am amazed anyone became a fan off of ASD or DTAS, because in my mind those records lacked the energy and passion of previous outings. In my mind you were getting a totally different band. But we're all here together as one big happy fanbase, and that's what counts.

I remember standing in line in Philadelphia during CFMT tour and a guy I was talking with in line made the holy trinity reference.
I like Hootenany alot, but I do listen to post more than pre.

Since I am a devout Catholic I don't anything about pre or post trinity or religion in general, but I just went for a short ride in the car (I make up fake errands to do on Sat and Sun mornings get a coffee and listen to music) and Tim is the greatest rock album of all time.
Prior to re-buying it this week I only ever had it on cassette and in bits and pieces on my pc. After giving it a full listen this morning (for the first time ever, it seems like) I've decided, all hyperbole aside, that Tim is the greatest rock record ever made!

Tim is the greatest rock record ever made! Just think how good it would have been if the "Tim" version of Can't Hardly Wait and also Nowhere is My Home were included. Also a better cover would have helped. I hate those highschoolish illustrations. Reminds me of Senior year Art class. And as long as I'm bitchin', the sound on Tim just sucks. It seems way compressed and tinny.

The cover was by Robert Longo. From what my wife tells me he is a pretty famous pop artist- his stuff and style is pretty pervasive throughout the advertising world. She was living in NYC trying to make it as a painter during the Tim period and knew Longo a little. She didn't really like him and hates his work. I don't like the goth look of the cover either.

It seems way compressed and tinny. well tom, you have just described the sound of all the 'Mats records (except maybe ASD)... and, I have never been a fan of the way they were mixed either... guitars aren't loud enough, drums too loud, and the tracks are all too "centered"... the entire canvas isn't being painted on... Paul's solo efforts are mixed much better...

goodo, what does this mean exactly?
I like loud drums. I think John Coltrane innovted this with Philly Joe Jones.
And the last thing I ever thought 'Mats albums were lacking were guitars.

And the last thing I ever thought 'Mats albums were lacking were guitars. Actually, Paul has complained about the lame guitar sound on Tim. He even (half?)joked that when they recorded Bastards of Young the lead guitar amp was miked with a dead microphone and nobody realized it until it was too late. So one guitar part was actually recording through an ambient room mic. I think he's also mentioned that producer Tommy Erdelyi was going deaf at the time, but nobody knew that until the record was in the can. Tim definitely needs a remaster. I thought that the remastered Left Of The Dial on All For Nothing sounded tons better than the original album version.
