Westerberg & Costello take up a good chuck of my record collection. Yet, I've heard very little about any kind of relationship between the two.
Years ago, in Musician W/The Mats on the cover, I remember Paul saying something to the effect that he keeps his lyrics intentionaly vague. If everything ment something then he'd turn into Elvis Costello.
Vanity Fair printed a list of Elvis's top 50 records to own & ASD made the list.
& I did catch the Mats when they opened for Elvis a few years ago during his rabbi days (Other Side of Summer tour).
Anybody know of any good stories about the two or comments they may have made regarding eachother's music?

placemat, please do not refer to Elvis Costello as simply "Elvis"... it is very confusing, and bordering on sacrilege since we all know that there is only one Elvis (singular) : thank ya, thank ya very much...

Sorry El Goodo.
Didn't mean to confuse anyone ... or take anything away form the King.

Always thought it was cool how Costello chose to name himself after a rock icon, and the Replacements chose to title an album "Let It Be".

Paul and Elvis C. were doing similar in-store concert tours at around the same time in 2002.
Have they never shared a sideman or studio musician? I noticed the guy who played keyboards with the small faces played on a couple of Paul's songs (14 songs I think) and he's a member of Billy Bragg's band now. If there's a Bragg-Paul connection there oughta be a Costello-Paul connection that way.
Love that PW quote about Elvis C. though.

I've heard EC say some nice things from time to time about the Mats and Paul's solo stuff, but I've never heard Paul talk about him.
Another case of that i think is Tom Waits. I've heard Tom speak kindly of the Mats and of course they did Date To Church together, but I've never heard Paul comment on Tom.
Although I guess no comment at all is better than "He needs to get his teeth kicked in."

Come to think of it, Paul never really comments positively on any fellow musicians, does he? I think he's grudgingly made a few positive comments about the Goo Goo Dolls ("They were the one band who opened for us that I didn't get sick of" ), but most of the time he just claims that he doesn't listen to rock music.

Love that PW quote about Elvis C. though. About shared recording musicians,Jim Keltner has played drums with EC back in King of America days, and played on SG. (and on a zillion others) But I think that quote is odd regarding EC lyrics. His lyrics were very hard to figure back in the old days, with no lyric sheets, and he used to say something to the same effect, that in many songs, the lyrics didn't matter as much as the sound and music. I still can't figure half the songs from his first 4-5 albums.

Actually Mojo mag does a little thing each month where they have an artist pick his/her favorite album and they write a little something about why etc.
A few months ago it featured Paul who picked Rod Stewert's Never a Dull Moment. Paul raves about early solo Stewert in the article. Lots of nice things to say about how Rod is/was underrated.
By the way, Never a Dull Moment is a rocking album.

I recently read an interview with Paul(I think it was around the time of Suicaine) where he said something about Elvis- paraphrasing, but it was something about how you can't keep a writer like him down. I believe he was referring to how no record company or radio format can keep certain artists from exploring the full reaches of their art. Sorry, I don't remember the full quote, but it definitely seemed respectful and complimentary.

i'm listening to poison moon (honky tonk demo) by costello right now... wait, wrong thread....
maybe the attractions could play as paul's backing band on the f**ker tour.... wait, wrong thread...
