The more I hear it, the more I love this song.
The bit about things unsaid...."you were the one".....
Gives me sad chills...

There's one line I can never hear right in this part:
Said not a word All night in the club 'Til closing time As I was headed for the door Said, "You comin' or what?" You slipped your hand in mine
That "Til closing time" line sounds to me like "dimples in check." That makes no sense ... how or why would you try to hold your dimples in check?

I think this song and Breath Some New Life are my 2 faves on Folker. They are both beautiful and heartbreaking.

I think it kinda ties into "As Far As I Know" pretty well---the narrator forsakes the lover in the song because his heart belongs someone who may or may not even exist. Or at least that's what I got out of it. I think I dig the "but that's the way it goes, honey" line the most. Ripped right out of real life---sympathetic and cold at the same time.

ok yes I am resurrecting this thread but since a few of us have been discussing the song in the review thread I thought what the hell. But I called you in the morning Said "Maybe this ain't the right thing to do" Does anyone else hear this as You said maybe this ain't the right thing to do? I keep hearing this. While its not a big thing to catch it does change the perspective of the song a bit. I usually think of it as him making the decision not to go meet with this woman but I can't help hearing the you and it meaning she got his hopes up and then changed her mind. But yet it doesn't really fit with the line 23 years ago I would've run every mile. Cause that shows hesitation on his part. Anyone want to give me their two cents and help me put this to rest?

I hear "you" too and it makes sense with the line that follows:

I guess it does make sense with the following line but I also think that a decision you make yourself can also lead you to tears.
So you're on the same page I am thinking she's the one that called and then the next day he called her and she changed her mind?

She called and left the "get your ass down here" message. 23 years ago he would have run every mile, but now he waits till the next morning to return the call. By then she'd come to her senses. I'm such a geek, anyone else I find it sadly familiar when Spock was awakened by Kirk from his spore-induced love stupor in that one episode of Star Trek? I guess it does make sense with the following line but I also think that a decision you make yourself can also lead you to tears. I hear-- Many times our paths crossed...our paths stayed lost... Seeing it I believe its "our paths ain't lost", especially in context of the next line starting, "if anything, it's deeper" meaning they haven't disconnected, but the relationship is deeper, not lost.

- I think it just means that the person in question didn't really say much all night until just as the club was about to close, when the person in question finally spoke up and said, "you comin' or what? slip your hand in mine..."
