23 YEARS AGO 23 years ago A boy wrecked his life 23 years ago On a warm Texas night Said not a word On a night in the club 'Til closing time As I was headed for the door Said, "You comin' or what? Slip your hand in mine" Took me to the place I said, "I'm in love with somebody, and I cannot play, said that's the way it goes, honey Between you and me and her, there's been many, many times our paths crossed, I've passed state laws If anything, it's deeper and deeper with me" 23 hours ago you call my phone You say, "Get your ass down here so we can talk" 23 years ago I would've run every mile Would've called you in the morning and said "Maybe this ain't the right thing to do" And I'd spend the afternoon in tears 23 years ago A boy wrecked your life 23 years ago On a hot Texas night Our paths cross again and again Sometimes five years in between...ten There's one thing that goes unsaid Now we say it out loud Maybe you were the one I should've holded on to Ohhh, baby you was the one I should've held to I've been through hell, too Oh maybe, baby, baby 23 years ago A boy wrecks his life 23 years ago On a warm Texas night

OK, 2004 - 23 = 1981 ... except we don't know when he wrote this

I gotta say, although at first this one seemed sub-par in it's overall effectiveness to me, it quickly grew on me when I was transcribing the lyrics and kinda realizing what it was all about. Like I said in the review forum, it's an epic tale of choices made romantically in one's life that are either right or wrong at the time, but tend to make you wonder and linger with you for the rest of your life...
Some of the lines in it are really great, especially in the last two verses. Paul's guitar solo is nice, as well.

Between you and me and her, there's been many, many times our paths crossed, I've passed state laws If anything, it's deeper and deeper with me
Between you and me (and her) there's been many, many times our paths have crossed our past ain't lost if anything it's deeper and deeper...

That's makes much more sense, thanks. I kept hearing 'state lines?' since at least it's a little more plausible than 'state laws'.

States do have their own laws... But anyways, our past ain't lost sounds more reasonable.

I downloaded it from Apple store, but if there is a lyric sheet in the CD I would like to know... I can hear paths stayed lost, and I hear our paths ain't lost... and now i hear our paths ain't lost... all fit. Anyway, he'll forget the words and change them when he plays it live. This is still the best song for me so far. I understand the idea of rethinking choices, old relationships, weird choices, triangles, decisions, infidelity, geekdom, back to the future and reflection... i've been through hell too

a few differences based on my take on the song in the first verse
you said "you comin or what...you slipped your hand in mine
someone getting taken advantage of
You took me to your place where I said Im in love with somebody
being taken is different than going willingly.no force just a person taking advantage of a state of mind
and I cannot place
drunk and bad judgement
so thats how the life wass wrecked I have to think it was a guy not a girl and that it was infidelity because .between you an dme and her ......
the last line is the twist I think he is talking to the one night stand when he says I should have holded onto (great westerbergian word)
my 0.02

Does anyone else hear the distant sounds of dogs barking, beginning at @ the 30 second mark, and reappearing throughout bits of the song? Never really noticed it before, until I listened on headphones. Not sure if its intended or my imagination.
I'd like to think some dog was yapping upstairs while PW was laying down the vocals.

I hear the bottle hit the floor. I think there's a yapping dog somewhere on Suicaine too.

Still no dogs. Lots of ghostly, breathy backing vocals that float in an out that I didn't pick up sans headphones. Does anyone else think this one of the most disturbing songs Paul's committed to record?

Does anyone else think this one of the most disturbing songs Paul's committed to record? No, I'm serious. I was in the front yard, with headphones, and for a second thought the Saints in the back yard were barking. Replayed it again, around the 32 second mark, buried, is dog barking. It goes away, and comes back later, maybe a minute later. Fades in and out at different random moments. Or maybe I am nuts (original option).

Well, no worries then . I think there's a cow mooing at about 2:10. It's a haunting song. "maybe you was the one I should have holded on to"

This one has grown on me to the point where it's no longer a 'sleeper' in my books - it's wide awake and doing remarkably well. It's an atmospheric, wonderfully written song that ranks among the finest on the album.

i'm with ya deebee. he put it smack dab in the middle on purpose, whatever reviewers say about "My Dad" being the centerpiece of the album. My favorite turn in the lyrics is "there's one thing that goes unsaid ..." and it could have petered out there but then he either imagines or they really do say all that stuff. The p.m. in tears and "get yer a** down here so we can talk" sounds even real-er than the details in "My Dad" -- yanked straight outta life.
