"A guy snaps your picture on roller blades"
That line always says early 1990s to me. It's a little like a rollerblading sight gag from a movie of that era, sort of a trendy detail that dates the song, though not necessarily in a bad way.
Any other trendy stuff in PW lyrics?
Or, any other stuff that clearly dates a song, like the $8.50 headache?

"Pin the tail on Demi More"
Was that around the time she posed pregnant and naked on the cover of Vanity Fair?

"Mannequin Shop" (spelling?) maybe? Although it's not like plastic surgery has gone out of style since then. I dunno, like TTBO says, I associate it with the early 90s (plus it seems like too easy a target for Paul but that's a separate issue).

"A guy snaps your picture on roller blades" I've always hated this line. Infact, it sorta ruins the whole song for me.

Double ditto. And Paul sounded kind of silly when he said that he was going for a timeless quality to the lyrics on that album. I think rollerblades were already dated when the song first came out.

Reverse ditto?
I didn't mind that line at all. For me, it painted the subject as someone that would follow safe trends/fads, and NOT roll the dice. But that's just me.
I wonder if people don't like it because they don't like rollerbladers!

I guess the safety pins in First Glimmer are retro punk trendy.
And worthy of a mention (although not really trendy) is the magazine in One Wink that 'smells like perfume'. I guess it was around that time that perfume ads began to be laced with the fragrance they were promoting, stinking out whole magazines (and the readers hands)in the process. Magazines Stink - Kids don't follow.
As for Paul following trends, 'We'll inherit the earth' is supposed to be pro-environment song which was a very trendy thing to do in the late 1980s. Personally, I've never seen it - it always strikes me as being a huge anthem of personal desolation!
And finally, isn't the video in CFMT where he's dressed totally in red a polite dig at the White Stripes? I do like The White Stripes, but you don't get much more trendy than that band at the moment.

I thought the same thing, but I guess now those red pants are the official 'Folker' pants. Unless he has more than one pair, and who besides Jack White has multiple pairs of red pants? (Santa Claus?)
